Sea sickness after the fact

I was just reading a post by jlp651--glad you had so much fun--and I noticed she said she was still rocking. I had the same experience after a 4 day cruise. I was fine on the ship, but I once I got off, I really was swaying. Does this happen to a lot of people? My DH thought I was crazy. My DS was affected somewhat. I was the worst--it took a week before I was back to normal (well as normal as I'll ever be :)). Anyone have a similar experience? Anything you can do to make it better?

Yes I have had that happen before too.
We sailed last week on the Wonder 3 day cruise. 5 out of 7 people in our group were affected with the "post-cruise swaying" syndrome. For me it lasted only a couple of days. I found small enclosed spaces made it worse (like in a bathroom stall for instance).
I don't know if there is anyway to make it better.

I rocked after the fact for about 6 days, took a four nite cruise, worst for me was my car, and looking at my computer. Its not a pleasant feeling. I took bonnie for a few days after which is what my dr recommended.

We've done three disney cruises, and afterwards me and DD both have the swaying problems for up to a week. The first cruise was really bad, but I guess the more you cruise the more your body gets used to it.

and it seemed to take the edge off...I'll let you know when it finally goes away...I just think its a nice reminder of a great vacation...but thats how my silly mind works!!!
Hey at least there was no alcohal needed!!!

I get motion sickness worse than anyone I know! (I won't go to a shopping center if I have to make too many turns in the same direction!) I felt the swaying too, after the first cruise, but for some reaon, I didn't feel sick. I just felt as if I was moving. (I honestly think the good Lord spared me as EVERYTHING ELSE gives me motion sickness! LOL!) I didn't feel it after the second cruise. Maybe one gets used to it each time they cruise!

Does Bonine (sp.) make anyone else sleepy. I got it because I thought it wouldn't make me tired, but on our last cruise I took one because I felt just a little sea sick (like I said before it was afterwards that it really hit)--I didn't recover for over a day. Luckily I took it the last night so I was just really tired when we got home and I was able to sleep really well. Maybe I should take it before I get on the plane for the 5 hour flight home.

I thought I was still moving after we got off the ship too!

The Bonine didnt make me sleepy when I took it.

This thread is making me real nervous :scared: especially since none of us have cruised before and kids will only be 4 and 7:happy1:

I'm with jlp651...I think the after effects are a nice reminder of the fun had onboard - and then you get to tell everyone who looks at you funny when you sway...

"I JUST GOT OFF A DISNEY CRUISE!!!!" :boat:

All kidding aside, I did sway a few days after my last cruise but I was able to laugh it off - it wasn't even a Disney cruise so I know this time, I'll really savor the after-effects!

What took longer to overcome was that instinctive need to lift my foot up and over to enter the bathroom...Now that's a harder one to explain in public!

I did prevent motion sickness onboard with a prescription(may be available over the counter) called TRANSDERM SCOP - a little behind the ear patch - worked great as I do get motion sickness just from walking:tilt: DH says it's b/c I turn my head to look at everything! Anyway, only side effect - and it was a bad one - is that it really blurred my vision. I find it's worth it...I won't be reading on the cruise much anyway.

Good luck ...Ahoy, :earsboy: :earsgirl: princess: pirate:

There is a disorder called Mal de Debarquement which literally means sick from disembarking. People with this condition are usually female and middle age. The condition is diagnosed when that rocking feeling continues for at least two weeks or more after a cruise and all other inner ear or vestibular illness is ruled out. The condition is either very rare or very under diagnosed since most regular docs and ENT docs are not familiar with it. In most cases of Mal de Debarquement, the patient recovers, however some people have this disorder to some degree for many years. People prone to this disorder usually report feeling that rocking feeling after every cruise they have gone on, with it lasting longer after each cruise until the one time that it doesn't go away. I have had Mal de Debarquement for about seven years now and am lucky that I am able to control my environment enough to keep a manageable level of baseline dizziness instead of full blown rocking most of the time. That's a good thing, because I refuse to stop cruising. I have found that taking Meclizine (Bonine) twice a day on sea days makes my full blown rocking last for a much shorter time after I get off the ship. If anyone has any questions about Mal de Debarquement, I would love to hear from you.

I didnt realize there was a diagnosis...great info! Thanks!
I have only had the rocking for a couple of days...so right now I'll call it a souviner! :) bonine does seem to help-I just cant get past the taste *yuk*

*rocks with the movement of the...um...earth?*

LOL! I feel better now, it's only been 24 hours for me and I thought i'd be done with it now....great info here!

Now I am nervous, does this happen a lot I am woman middle age. I really don't want to be rocking for days after. I have never had motion sickness, I have never been a ship before either. just plane trains auto. I am thinking to change plans. please advise.

I think my rocking has stopped :(

I wouldnt worry about it too much-its actually a pretty cool feeling...

I got off the Wonder, one week ago today and my swaying stopped only a few days after I got off.
Really it is kind of a cool feeling as jlp says, I didn't feel nauseaus at all, just kind of felt like my feet wanted to "roll" with the waves.

tinarena2000 - Don't change your plans
:boat:

I'm the one that gets motion sickness just by walking:goodvibes

Like the other posters have said, the after effects are more like an urge to sway, not really nausea...

It's definitely nothing to change your plans about - I've only cruised 2x - both times took something as a preventive measure for sea sickness...did fine....I'm sure this upcoming cruise will also be fine as I hear Disney has the best system out there for keeping the rocking to a minimumpirate:

We did the bridge tour-it was awsome!!!! They told us that they have a stabilizer fin that decreases motion by 90 %!!!! Really-you can't feel the motion of this ship during calm seas...the only way I was able to tell was b/c I looked out on our verhanda!!!

This is bizarre! I'm also super-prone to motion sickness and my luck I'd be one of the few unfortunate enough to get this Mal de Debarquement disease. I have never heard of something like that! I am surprised you don't regret taking that first cruise, gizfish. I don't know that I would feel the same way under the circumstances. Maybe Mal de Debarquement isn't that bad?? Still, I wouldn't sign up for it!

We drove home directly after getting off a 4 day cruise. One of my 10 yr olds got very sick in the car. Luckily, I had a bag with us in the car. I had never even thought about getting sick after we got off the ship. We were all perfectly fine while on the ship. I gave her a children's Dramimine and she was fine the rest of the ride home. Next time, I will be sure to give her something before we get in the car.
