Hi everyone!

We'll be going on our first cruise in August :cool1: but we were concerned about sea sickness. I know everyone's different as to what makes them sick or not, but generally, are most people OK with the boat and all that? And if you do get sick, what do you take/do in order to help with it? Thanks!!!

I tend to get very motion sick and my Dr. prescribes the patch for motion sickness (I think it's called the trans derm scop) it's like a little round sticker that you place on your head behind your ear. It time releases the medicine and you change it every 72 hours. You can get them wet, they don't come off. I have a few side effects (dry mouth and blurred vision) from it, but not once have I got sea sick. Call and see if your Dr. thinks it's a good choice for you or not. Have a great cruise!

Once you get sea sick it is a little late to take anything!! You just go out and get fresh air!!!:thumbsup2 I take meclizine which can be bought over the counter from a pharmacy!!! :yay: The patch works but there are side effects like blurred vision.:sad2:

My dh is prone to dizziness and we were really concerned about him being seasick on our first cruise. I packed bonine (non Drowsy) we never had to use it he was find the entire trip.

The wrist bands with the pressure points work really well. We had forgotten to bring anything and started to feel seasick watching the show the first night. I bought the bands in the gift shop outside the theater and found that they worked -thankfully.:) We were fine with these on the rest of the trip with no side effects.

Our first cruise we were fine- felt it in our head during dinner the first night but it was nothing except to comment on the weird feeling. We just returned from the second cruise- even the staff was getting seasick the first night! I had brought stuff just in case- Dramamine, children's Bonine, and my DMIL had the foresight to get a Rx filled for the patches.

So, even though I had previously posted on these boards that I did not believe in taking something unless it was needed.....I TAKE IT BACK!!!
After feeling SO BAD, I ended up feeding my kids pills the whole trip. I popped on a patch, but they take a few hours to work, so I popped pills, too. My DH took pills the whole time- he felt dizzy except for when we were in port.

The seas were pretty rough that first night and people had trouble walking. It was kind of funny at first, but it seemed like everyone took to their cabin early; they were probably all feeling gross.

I recommend taking everything you can get your hands on, just in case!!!:rotfl:

Seasickness happens when your inner-ear, and your eyes, send conflicting messages to your brain, and you brain gets confused. Hence people with dizziness issues in the first place ( caused in the inner ear often) get it worse.

The medication above on P/P will help if taken in advance, but the best natural remedies is:-

  • Look at the horizon of the sea/sky from the ship. The largest possible vision.
  • Take in looks of fresh air.
  • Drink a little water, not soda or booze,
  • Do not eat 'fatty' foods, fried eggs sausages bacon etc.

The effects on the big cruise ships are often very little against the small boats, for example my DD who is prone to Seasickness, doesn't often get it on the ship, but does on small tender boats, or ferry's such as the Cozumel one to Playa.

My DD cannot go down to lower decks when there is rough seas, she was ill, in Animators palate in a very rough storm. She stays in our stateroom on deck 8 and prefers that.

each person is slightly different.

Thanks for all of the replies! :goodvibes

I think what we'll probably do is get a few over the counter medicines and bring them along, just in case. It can't hurt to be prepared!

And thanks for those natural tips, Andrew DEREK UK!

If you can ''natural'' is best, it doesnt work for everone, but most people feel better if you are out and about, fresh air, and look long and hard at the longest view of the Horizion.

Works for my DD!

Good luck

We started taking Bonine and ginger capsules the day before our cruise so that we would have it in our system. We took the recommended doses as we cruised and had no problems whatsoever.

When we sailed on the Wonder for 3 days, we had no issues except feeling the swaying of the ship.

On the March 22, 2008 7 Day Western, we had a very rough day and it prevented us from tendering at Grand Cayman. That day the kids were having a ball in the Mickey Pool, as it was like a wave pool at a water park. Shortly afterwards, my dd got sea sick. We ended up spending the day on the lounge chairs in deck 4. She was fine by dinner and we didn't miss Animator's Palate. Afterwards, we took sea sickness medication for the rest of the cruise.

We felt the swaying of ship for a few days afterwards (There is a thread about this) and on the evening following my dd's first day back to school, she got sick again. We are not specifically sure if this illness was related or something else. We kept her home from school on Tuesday but really she was fine all day.

I don't wait to see IF I will get seasick - I take medication before I even get on the ship and every day afterwards. Both my cruises out of Port Canaveral had rough seas the first night. Even taking Meclizine, I still felt dizzy at times.

When ever i felt a little ill i was took ginger pills, they seemed to work great!

You can find them at your local GMC

Is there any non drowsey medication for kids under 12? I went to our Vitamin Shoppe & they did have a few ginger pills & chewables but they were all for 12 & older. So is the non drowsey dramamine..is there a kid version?
(my DS gets sick driving in the car for short periods so I a nervous about him) TY!
