:scared1:Hello,

When traveling onDCL 2 years ago, I remember skin irritation and little stings at Castaway Cay. Sea lice or small jelly fish etc can cause these stings. I was thinking of ordering Sea safe sunscreen for our trip as we have 3 different water related shore excursions on our trip.

Does anyone have any experience with this or related products? Any other related advice? We want to enjoy the water and all I'd the activities.

Thanks!!

Panama Jack sells safe sun screen. While I don't know that it is labelled as sea safe or whatever, it IS what Discovery Cove will allow you to use, and the only one you can use. As they have fish, stingrays and dolphin encounters, it would most definitely be safe for excursions that you are doing.

Being from the Midwest, we had never heard of sea lice....it is a real problem. Sea lice is on the warning board at castaway cay.

I'm from Hawaii. No sea lice here (that I've experienced in over four decades). But when we went to CC I got TONS of bites all over my feet and legs from sand fleas. So gross and so itchy! I had to go to the med center to make sure they weren't bed bugs or spider bites (as suggested by the nurse person down there when DH went to buy hydrocortisone cream from her for me). Those bites stayed with me for weeks.

Ditto the sea safe. I never used to "believe" in sea lice b/c I'd only swam in Pacific Coast and Hawaii waters (we were lucky in Cancun I guess).

On our last CC trip I got bit SO BAD I thought at first I had hives from food allergies or bed bug bites. They were really painful and ugly (all over my thighs). Ick. I'd get sea safe or something similar from now on.

I have had plenty of experiences with sea lice in Fiji and while I've never used products like Safe Sea, I have spoken to people who have and still got stung.

I am certainly no sea lice expert, but from a purely scientific perspective, I can't see how these products could work. They seem to work on the principle that having this stuff on your skin stops the sea life from attaching to you. But the process is not that simple.

Sea lice stings are triggered by pressure and this pressure happens when the sea lice get trapped against your body. This is why sea lice stings are usually in places such as under your swimsuit, in your hair, around your snorkel mask, or places where skin rubs against itself (e.g the underarms, groin area etc). Once you swim into a sea lice area (they don't aim for you) and the jellyfish larvae become trapped and under pressure, they sting. It's not like they can sense the ointments and then swim away.

Ironically, many people apply these creams like sunscreen to the places they are less likely to be stung. Rashes that just occur on the legs or arms could be sea lice, but are just as likely (if not more so) to be the result of something else like sand fleas (as mentioned by the pp).

The only sea lice discomfort that I suffer from is the moment when they sting. It's like dozens of teeny tiny electric shocks all at once. Uncomfortable, but not bad enough to worry about. I'm lucky to be one of many people that has no long term effects (rashes etc) from Sea Lice. But in saying that, I have always swum ahead to a sea lice - free patch and pulled my swimsuit from my skin underwater to flush them out.

Panicking and getting straight out the ocean, causes the water to flush from your swimsuit, and your swimsuit to suck against your skin. This is arguably one of the worst things you can do. You are causing extra pressure and there is no way for the larvae to escape. I've also read forums where people have recommended wearing rash shirts not realising that this increases the places the larvae get trapped. Sunburn protection - yes. Sea lice protection - no.

From what I understand, even dead sea llice can still sting, so if you do get stung, wash out your swimsuit afterwards.

If nothing else, don't loose any sleep over them. As long as your not allergic to them, I really don't think they're as bad as many websites make out

I have 2 little ones that are allergic to just about every biting bug LOL.....mosquito bites cause blisters on them. So I definitely need to check in to some really loose swim shorts for them or something.

Just got off the Fantasy this past Sat, On our first cruise to CC in 2011 we experienced Sea Lice there( Not really that bad but a little gross, one of the CM on the island said to go to Bathroom and wash off with warm water...It worked just fine) This past cruise we purchased Sea safe and we all used it... It worked great... not 1 Family member ...8 of us complained about itching or stinging.

My daughter got bit by something when we were on CC. It made a really big place on her leg so we took her to the little medic shack. The guy who was working said it looked like a mosquito bite. Apparently they have really big Mosquitos in the area. DD didn't seem too bothered by it even through it looked awful. We put some Benadryl cream on it and it went down by the next day.

Going the end of august. Do I really have to worry about this? Never had a problem any other time I've been to CC. But now I have a 10 month old DGS to worry about.

Ok, I'm really nervous now....dd, ds and myself are extremely sensitive to any type of insect bite; also my ds has sensory processing disorder and any type of skin irritation is a much larger problem for him than the typical child. We leave for Disney in 5 days so I don't have time to order the Safe Sea. Where else could I get it - do they sell anything like it on the ship? I'm not going to be able to enjoy CC because I'll be so worried about it the whole time (I know that sounds a little drastic but I am a worrier).....

Hi, I am responding from my perspective as a mother of twin 7-year-old boys, someone with sensitive skin and I am a true "bite hater", and also a child psychologist.

I wouldn't worry too much about the sea lice, because it sounds like there is nothing you can do preemptively. Just make sure to have loose swimwear on him and wash him down with warm water after he is done swimming or playing in the sand. The sound of a seven-year-old having a hard time with something is very different from a three-year-old crying/whining/complaining. The older child is simply louder, has more words (or with my boys, sometimes not -- they just whine), and we know they will complain more often. Little kids have a miraculous tolerance for things.

If your son does better with explaining about it before you get to CC, then I'd definitely do that. But you might want to carry some hydrocortisone cream and Benadryl for him in case he gets sea lice or sand flea bites. The sand flea thing killed me. Totally intruded on my life experience for the next several days and the bites were there for weeks. Thankfully, I carry Benadryl with me everywhere I go. Just prepare yourself to be able to support and comfort him, but try to have a good time (I know, sounds impossible, but make the most of it!) My boys loved the bike riding -- maybe you can do that first to start off the day in a positive way!

Just an idea --you can order the Sea Safe through Amazon and choose expedited shipping. It's available I just checked. Then you would have it for your trip that leaves in five days.
All truth to be told, I thought the sea lice was exaggerated a bit but my five year old woke up the day after CC covered in whelps. She isn't allergic to any foods so this was our best guess. It took almost a week for them to subside. I think the reason she got them more than the rest of us is that she played in the sand a lot and had a tighter fitting bathing suit than the boys who were in the water more. Don't avoid the beach at CC for fear though. You will always remember that day playing in the sun. The memories of itchies if you do get them will be short lived.

I hope nothing I said made you really nervous. Honestly, I wouldn't let them worry you.

I almost always wear a t-shirt out swimming. This is partially due to body insecurities, but mainly due to skin cancer awareness. (The sun is very damaging in my part of the world and two members of my family have had melanomas). Wearing the t-shirt does means I've been stung around my torso more than I probably should have been, but the fact that I will continue to wear a t-shirt hopefully stands as a sign that the sea lice aren't that frightening.

It's perhaps comparable to not sending your kids to school incase they catch head lice, or not going for a walk in the bush incase there are mosquitoes. What will be, will be, and in all likelihood you and your kids will be fine.

Interestingly, my young son has never reported feeling any of the stings and I have never been stung while swimming in the shallows with him. It's only while I've been out snorkelling. I have no idea if that is just a lucky coincidence or if sea lice don't hang about in the shallows??

Lastly, if it's still really worrying you to a point where you might not enjoy your holiday, a wet suit for your child would work as they keep the skin dry.

I have very sensitive skin and once I realized what they were (it was a noticeable sting, not like a little tickle of something brushing by), I started avoiding them when I could see them. When I couldn't avoid them, I did just what a PP mentioned: swam to a clear area and sort of waved them away and out of my suit. That said, even when they were unavoidable, I wasn't being stung often. Mostly just when I would kick hard or feel the tickle of something on my chest and rub it. I didn't have a bad reaction to them at all (maybe just a tiny red spot), even though I typically react to skin irritants by turning red and blotchy. However, one boy on our snorkeling excursion came out of the water with streaky red splotches down his back. It looked bad, almost like a huge strawberry birthmark, but our guides said it was just a reaction to the sea lice. It wasn't swollen at all and the boy said it didn't itch or hurt and it went away by the time we had made our way back to land. It looked scary, but it went away with no problem. The guides had a spray bottle, presumably with vinegar, to lessen the sting.
My daughter (9) was really freaked out by the sea lice. She had to get out of the water and wouldn't go back in. I hadn't thought to warn her because I had never before encountered sea lice in all my years of living on the east coast. If I had explained what they were and told her it was absolutely nothing to worry about beforehand, it probably wouldn't have been a big deal. Once she felt a sting or two, she was too upset to listen to a calm, rational explanation ;) So definitely talk to your kids about them, just so they know what it is if they feel a little sting. I'm sure you know best how to approach it with your kids so they don't feel scared.

Oh, and we have never encountered them at CC, only further south in the Caribbean, so maybe it's seasonal?

Ugh. I had forgotten about this. It was an issue a few years ago. 10 yr old nephew screaming and crying about feeling like he got stung. Refused to go back into the water and we had a really miserable day. Huge bummer because it is one of favorite places on earth. I am going to get that sea safe & hope for the best.

Is it Sea Safe or Safe Sea? When I Google Sea Safe, it comes up being a fiber glass company or a sea salvage company. I'm not trying to split hairs, but I just want to make sure I'm researching the right thing. :)

From what I can gather, jellyfish and their larvae (sea lice) is prevalent in the Atlantic from February-September. To be honest, I've never heard of it till now. I grew up on the East Coast and I'd never heard of it, but I now live in a land locked state so sea life isn't much of a threat. :p

Do insect repellent help at all against sand flea?

Basically, what I've learned out of this thread is, go swimming in my Thanksgiving "fat" clothes, and borrow some Frontline from my dog and I should be set. :rotfl:
