Hi,
I am new to this board and have really enjoyed reading all the posts here.

My husband and I are going on the 3 day land/4 day sea cruise in June of 2003 for our 14th wedding anniversary (ok....we originally wanted to wait for our 15th, but couldn't wait another year!:D )

Can someone please tell me what are "sea legs" that some people tend to develop when taking a cruise? Thanks.

It generally indicates your ability to cope with the motion of the ship on the waves. In rough seas, it can not only indicate your ability to keep food down, but your ability to walk along a passageway without bumping back and forth against the walls.

It also refers to your ability do what Firefighter Mickey described without even thinking about it. By Thursday on the 7-day cruise, most folks don't even notice the motion because they've become so used to it.

But I think the funniest thing about "sea legs" is that sometimes after you are back on the ground, you might still feel a motion like you were still aboard...

I've seen a post somewhere that a dr recommended bonine for 2 weeks after sailing to prevent sea legs and/or vertigo. Does anyone know if you've ever heard of taking daily bonine a week or 2 before a cruise to prevent sea legs?

I would be curious also re: taking bonine prior to your trip. I am so paranoid that I will get sea sick!!

At the Hello Kitty store in Havensite Mall (St. Thomas) I was SO sure the mall was on a floating dock - it felt like it was constantly moving! I was assured it was on solid ground! I don't think I ever got used to the movement of the ship (not 100%) - I spent the entire trip walking around like I was drunk!

I felt the ground moving at the MCO airport on our way home from DCL. Hubby was laughing at me. It lasted a handful of days.
I just hope I wasnt actually swaying back and forth and nobody noticed. ;)

and it's been almost 2 months!! I was fine on the ship, but I felt like the land was moving as others described. Today was my 3rd Dr. appointment, she feels that I have "POST" motion sickness, apparently it does happen! She wants to do lab work, MRI & other "dizziness" test to confirm that there isn't something else going on, yikes!!! It looks like I'm one of those rare "lucky" ones who gets to keep "sailing!"

We've rebooked for a December 7 day. I'm going whether I'm rocking or not!!!

The same thing happened to me for several days, it was MISERABLE. "Rocking" on a ship is one thing, "rocking" when you are off the ship is a totally different feeling! I have since heard that taking an antihistamine will solve the problem!! man, I hope it works for my 5/12 cruise!

Has anyone taken Bonine for motion sickness after their cruise? Did it work? This is day 5 and I still feel the motion. It's not constant, but I'm ready for it to end! I was fine on the ship!

Bonnie didn't do a lot to help me once I got back home. A prescription called Meclizine helped, but it didn't do the trick either. My sea legs went on for 2 1/2 months, we even did a very comprehensive dizziness test (2 hours worth of being made dizzy) just to rule out any "real" problem. Fortunately, the test was normal, but I was still "rocking". Finally it all went away!
My doctor said that people who get sea sick on the boat are affected very acutely, but it goes away as soon as they are off the boat. Post motion sickness however, lingers and lingers.
I'm glad it's over for me (at least until we sail in Dec. - 7 days this time!)

My first cruise (4 day) I was rocking for 3 months after. I took bonine the 4 days on the ship and for the airplane rides. They did the whole nine yards to me too, just to make sure nothing happened ironically the same time I was on the ship. MRI, blood work etc..., nothing was wrong and it went away eventually.

The next cruise (7 day), I took the bonine for the whole cruise and for 2 weeks after and I was only rocking for about 2 weeks after that. I wouldn't do it without bonine, though and I would not do the patch (too many things go wrong). So just take the bonine for the trip and continue taking it like my doctor told me and you will be fine.

By the way, Meclyzine is the active ingredients in Bonine if you read the label. It is the same thing as a prescription that the doctor writes.

I guess I'll consider myself fortunate that my bouts with dizziness are only occasional and I'm feeling much better today!

Thanks for your help.

So deannalew, to add some humor to this what did you think sealegs meant?

I have a cure for it. Just keep ordering the drink of the day. That will fix it !!!!!!

The best way to get your sea legs is to just keep ordering the drink of the day!!!!! :D

That must be the problem when we all get home. Withdrawls from those "drinks of the day". Maybe we will all have to get those recipes and continue that type of medicinal cure at home to cure the "sea legs"!!! ;)

deannalew,
we had sea legs after the cruise was over! We felt like we were still moving. It was actually a nice reminder of where we had just been. We are doing 3land/4sea in June2003 also(ours is a year late for our 20th anniv) when are you sailing? We are 6/22.
