I haven't been to disney in over 10 years, the kids and I have been watching some ride videos to know what to expect but at the same time I want *some* things to be an exciting surprise, I refuse to watch ride footage of Remy or MMRR, or SDMT, but as that one is a roller coaster and I need to prepare DD5 what to expect, just wondering what you would rate the "thrill level" at? is it a kid friendly pretty tame coaster like Slinky or Barnstormer? or is it a bit more intense like Thunder Mountain?

So much less "scary" than Slinky. Doesn't feel like it goes as fast, no big hills or scary views. Seems to have been built very deliberate with scenery around the structure so you never really feel like you left the ground. I've never seen a youngster get off upset or scared.

awesome 😀 thank you so much for responding

A whole lot of fun, similar to Slinky!☺️
💕💕💕 I'm so excited to see it. I still remember being 9 years old on my first trip to WDW and just burying my face in my Dad's shirt on Snow Whites Scary Adventures! That witch though 😱😱😱😱 I've heard SDMT is much less scary haha

just echoing about it being super smooth and very mild. Shouldn't scare anyone at all. I would suggest going on during the day first maybe just in case...going on at night is very cool but might be a little scarier?

We are starting our trip with Magic Kingdom and I'm *hoping* SDMT will be our first ride of the day

She’s still there! 🖤

A ton of people will be heading to SDMT first thing, so you will need to get to MK plenty early.

On the other hand, you can avoid that if you decide to pay ILL$ for it, and you can probably pick a very early time for it. If you go this route, you might do Barnstomer at rope drop instead of SDMT. Virtually no one will be going there at rope drop, and it is the tamest roller coaster of all.

I'm not super keen on paying for ILL but I am definitely considering it for this

If you don’t want to pay for $ILL, another option is waiting until later in the evening when the lines get shorter. We’ve done this several times at 7D, and the longest wait we’ve had was 20 minutes during opening week back in 2014. We found a 15 minute actual wait just a few weeks ago. The posted wait was 40.

Not everyone will keep their kids out late, but my fondest Disney memory is chasing mg then 3 year old daughter back to the entrance of Space Mountain moments before midnight with her screaming “One More Time Daddy” all the way.

We live SDMT and I think some of the reasons it feels safer to kids are the cars. Very smooth track, swaying plus you are much more enclosed in those cars as opposed to BTM. We ride EE when my daughter was 4 and she was petrified! Ends up she thought she could fall out. (Oops! She loved it next after she told me and explaining that’s not possible.)

One comment on making that your first ride of the trip….I would want to be completely sure your child is going to like it! Our first Disney trip when my brother was 6 we rode Pirates of the Caribbean first and that did him in!! (40 years ago so exposure to ‘scary’ was much different from now.) After that ride we couldn’t get him in another boat - even Jungle Cruise and small world! We’re out for him!

Since that experience I always warn people to choose their first ride carefully as it can set the tone for your entire trip.

that's actually really good advice!! perhaps we should snag an ILL for SDMT and ride Small World first thing... because the situation you are describing actually happened to us at the fair a couple weeks ago, DD5 didn't like the first ride and after that, it was a cry fest alllllll day. She's a stubborn little thing and if she doesn't want to do something literally nothing will convince her

I understand completely as that experience changed our first trip for sure as my brother refused to ride so mom chose not to ride too.

So glad it helped!

Sdmt Is a tame coaster, but it is still a coaster. DD5 hated it. Friend’s 8yo also was not a fan.

Outside of the small drop coming out of the mine ( and its not that big of a drop), its very tame. The swinging cars make it more fun than it normally would be. Well themed and the mine if fun to go through.
