SDMT thrill level?

I took mine on 7DMT at ages 2 & 5. They are generally good with rides and want to do them. In this case, neither hated it, 2 year old liked it but you wouldn't say it from the pictures; 5 year old said it was ok, but I would say they were nervous since he did opt out of BTMRR shortly after that one. Was still up for everything else after that.

I am currently having the same dilemma but with SDD since kids are so different and the perception people have of rides changes with their kids enjoyment. My kids are 6 and 9 now and saying they want to try it but I don't want to potentially ruin their experience of rides right at the start of the trip, not to mention waste my 7am LL, lol.

Up to this point I've been hearing that SDD was more fun/etc than SDMT but now in this thread I'm reading it's a more thrilling ride which to me means it's would be scarier? So hard to know what to do with the little ones.

SDD is definitely a step up from SDMT. It’s way more fun. Lasts a littler longer as well I believe. I love that ride!

All my grandkids love it. As soon as they were tall enough , they were on it.

But it is a short ride. Have heard many people, whoo hoo, this is great....oh is that it???????

I was just about to say the same thing. Be prepared to be disappointed for how short it is. No thrill factor, and about 2 minutes 30 seconds long. I would never pay ILL for this one. It is our kids least favourite coaster at Disney, just to temper the OP's expectations.

I find SDMT to be more thrilling than Slinky. the swinging cars really make you feel like youre getting whipped through the turns. it's not super intense. my 5 yr old loves it. Slinky is a longer ride. and def feels more open. both are fun.

You can see most of the ride from the streets around it. You could walk near it and ask your kids if they want to ride.

I guess maybe for kids it's thrilling? For me? It's about a 1 on a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being most thrilling). And I'm not a "OMG MUST BE THRILLED ALL THE TIME" kind of person. I like a mix. Mine Train is one that IF the line is short and I'm bored I'll do. I definitely wouldn't pay for it.

ah ok thanks, for some reason I thought most of this one was enclosed, because there are scenes with animatronics aren't there?

We find 7DMT to be very similar to BTMRR except that it's smoother and somewhat faster; my family actually prefers BTMRR. I didn't realize the cars on 7DMT swung from side to side until the very end, when the ride pauses outside the cottage scene. Not expecting this, it caught me by surprise and triggered my motion sickness, to the point where I had to sit out the next hour or so, I was so dizzy/nauseated- but it was from the very end, when the ride was almost stopped, and not from the coaster itself. I haven't been that sick from a ride since Barnstormer; those tight curves killed me for HOURS!

Yes, the animatronics scenes are enclosed, and that part is like a "dark ride". Most of the rest of it is outside and can been seen.

It’s mild for a roller coaster but neither of my kids liked it until they were older, my daughter loved it at 7 (she tried at 4 and was not a fan) and my son tried at 2 and 4 and hated it with a passion both times. I made the mistake of doing it as the first ride and if I could go back I’d do a non coaster to start the trip if you haven’t taken them on a coaster recently.

It’s a great starter coaster! Dh and ds like to make it more “thrilling” by leaning into the turns since the cars swing back and forth.

So much less "scary" than Slinky. Doesn't feel like it goes as fast, no big hills or scary views. Seems to have been built very deliberate with scenery around the structure so you never really feel like you left the ground. I've never seen a youngster get off upset or scared.

Well my daughter is in that group! Seriously the look of absolute consternation on the in ride video was hysterical. Figures she's tall enough for everything with a height limit and after that and space mountain, the only other ride we did with a height limit with her was alien sliding saucers. She loved that one.

She actually liked the first half of space mountain, then the second half was pure terror. I figured SDMT would be better because she could see everything. I was wrong.

She hated the Rat, WAS BAWLING on MMRR.

But it tracks, she did try to climb out of Dumbo at 20 months.

It is surprisingly slow and gentle. If DD5 has done any type on roller coaster they will be fine.

Yeah I have one that would try to escape that young.
I was the Mom running around the kiddie boat ride ready to catch him. :scared1:

One comment on making that your first ride of the trip….I would want to be completely sure your child is going to like it! Our first Disney trip when my brother was 6 we rode Pirates of the Caribbean first and that did him in!! (40 years ago so exposure to ‘scary’ was much different from now.) After that ride we couldn’t get him in another boat - even Jungle Cruise and small world! We’re out for him!

Since that experience I always warn people to choose their first ride carefully as it can set the tone for your entire trip.
I was 6 on my first visit to WDW. I don't know if it was our first day or first ride, but we went on Star Tours. My mom says I really thought we launched into space and I was freaking out! After that, she says I asked her if the other rides were going to be scary, too. So this is good advice. Do something very benign for the first ride and work your way up!

My 4 year old loved SDMT and Barnstormer, though that one is more thrilling than SDMT. Those were the only 2 coasters she was tall enough for on her first visit.
