My mother in law makes a scotch oat stuffing/dressing with butter, onions and oatmeal. She refuses to give me the recipe and I was wondering if anyone knows it? I may be lacking ingredients because those are all I know. I know there is not a flavor of sage or any of the typical spices in it...just butter and onion and I think some bread but it is very thick more like an oatmeal than the consistencey of stuffing. I have tried a couple of times to make it but I cannot get it right. I would LOVE to learn how to make it and then serve it at Christmas......

She sounds lovely  :rotfl2: :lmao:

I can't wait until you get the recipe and serve it! I bet she will love that!

I actually think this thread will need an update from you :thumbsup2

Pour one cup of scotch into the cook, let rest. Oatmeal, onions and butter are optional.

SCOTTISH TURKEY STUFFING (NEW YEAR)

1/2 c. butter
1 med. onion, diced
Salt and pepper to taste
2 c. oatmeal

Melt butter in saucepan; cook onion in butter until tender. Add salt and pepper; remove from heat. Add oatmeal, mixture should be moist. Use stuffing for turkey, chicken or pork spareribs.

I found this on www.cooks.com. It seems to have the ingredients you mentioned....I hope it helps. :rotfl2:

Not to put down your MIL -but I don't get the whole -"I won't give out that recipe" thing.
I have only had it happen to me once -and I felt hurt and kind of confused.
Whats the big deal?

I can only answer for me, but many times I have no idea what the recipe is. Lots of times I have just kinda thrown in whatever I have on hand and would have no way of knowing how much of whatever I put into it. There are lots of things I just make without thinking about it and if someone asked for a recipe I would be lost.

Now, if its something that I had a recipe for I would always share. I take it as a complement!

DHs GM made the most wonderful sugar cookies. I always asked for the recipe, but she never would give it out. I got her recipe file when she died and thought I found the recipe, but alas it wasn't anywhere close to what she made. I am now thinking she took the original recipe and made it her own over the years and whatever extra she put in I will never know.

THANKS!!! I t hink this must be it! When I did it I did not cook the oat meal and I put bread in it. I am not that great a cook and did not even THINK of going to the web sites to look for it duh!! Yes she is lovely....I could tell you stories...
She will not give out her recipes for anything. Half of them are just MIXES!!! I will update when Christmas comes. This has been a quest for me for the past 28 years! It only just occured to me on Thanksgiving this year that I could get it on line!! Again duh!!

I absolutely do not like a traditional stuffing. Never have, never will. There is just something about soggy bread that sends a chill up and down my spine.

This is an interesting recipe, might be worth trying out next year. :thumbsup2
