School locks bathrooms BETWEEN classes then. . .

I think the kids should be allowed to go the bathroom when they need to. Now if it gets excessive for that student then limit it for that kid--if there is no reason why. Anyone could have an upset stomach after lunch or could just have the beginning of a virus. How does it benefit the kid to try to hold it in or worse yet not be able to hold it in.
When I was in school we could go to the bathroom when needed. They were never locked. I never saw people in there smoking or just hanging out. I have picked up my kids more than once and then had to race them off to a bathroom at Burger King or whatever was closest because they had to go so bad. There is just no reason for that.

I would have a MAJOR problem with this!! I recall when I was in 4th grade and I had to get a note from the Dr stating that I had to use the bathroom more than once a day! The teacher would walk us in a group to the bathroom mid-morning..by the afternoon I had to go again and she made me get a note from the Dr but after that I got to walk out and go when I needed to. The same thing happened with my godson in 3rd grade...he had gotten major doses of chemo and his bladder was not the greatest and he came home saying his teacher wouldn't let him go tothe bathroom when he needed to...well my friend blasted a letter off to the teacher and the superintendent...after that the teacher let Matt go whenever he had to go.

I work at a high school and their policy is to lock the bathrooms during passing periods. They are unlocked when classes start and there is a bathroom monitor that you have to sign in/out with.

It is a form of punishment IMO, BUT, there are over 2000 students in this high school. If they did not lock the bathrooms during passing periods there would be no control over who is going in them and smoking, drinking, vandalizing, etc.

Yes, there are the good high school students who actually use the bathroom to physically use the bathroom, then there are those who use the bathroom as an excuse to get out of the classroom, to wander the hallways disrupting other classrooms, to smoke, to drink, etc. And yes this does happen in high schools.

Working for an administrator I cannot tell you how many kids have been busted for drinking and smoking in the bathrooms. It is a discomfort to those students who do not smoke to walk into a smoke filled bathroom. That is another reason for locking them. It happens more than you think.

It wasn't this way when I was in high school. I cannot believe how much things have changed in 19 years.

Sorry but I think it's inhumane to not allow someone to use the restroom when they need to. If you are having problems with smoking and vandalism, than have volunteers or staff members in the restrooms. I'd like to see someone tell the teacher's they aren't allowed to go .

They should! I work for a school system and I have seen plenty
of control freaks getting off on their power-I'm talking about teachers. I've seen teachers rubbing their hands together in
glee over power issues. It's disgusting. So is this rule - if I were
a student at this school....it wouldn't take me long to figure out how to persuade the admin to change their minds. Obviously, these administrators have risen to the highest level of their
incompetence. I hate people who refuse to work at solving problems and just take the easy way out. The worlds full of em.

LOL.....my godson was always told that if he has to go to the bathroom and the teacher says no, just get up and walk out of the class, use the bathroom adn go right to the principals office and have them call his mom...I am going to tell my daughter the same thing once she starts school.....

Students are less likely to be bullied in the bathroom if they go during classes as opposed to between classes!

When I was in grade school (public school) teachers were generally liberal about letting students go to the bathroom, but only one of each sex could be out at any given time.

In one elementary school and in the junior high school the boys' rooms had no doors on the stalls.

Here the kids in grade school are only allowed to go out to the bathroom in pairs...no kid is allowed out of the classroom alone..even if they go to the nurse, a kid goes with them.

I think it is a great idea. OUr students have plenty of time between classes to use the restroom so that five minutes into the class they shouldn't suddenly need to go. There are restrooms on each grade hall and it isn't a problem to go if you need to. The problem that we have is that kids want to socialize between classes and walk girlfriend/boyfriend to class and not go and then go during class. When one goes then 5 more will need to go. I don't let my students go during class unless they are green and look like thye are going to throw up. Our kids were going in during class and smoking and peeing and doing other things on the wall. No one likes to clean that up and teachers can't monitor during class.

The problem is that they aren't allowed to go between classes.
The bathrooms are locked between classes so that students can not enter them. They are only allowed to use the bathroom during class 15 times per month and are given access during lunch and gym.

My DD, 10, in 4th grade, was able to quickly do the math for 15 passes per month.

That is not even 1 pass per day.

And what about the poor people who have Krohn's or Colitis. Eventhough they could get a note from their Dr., it sounds like there isn't even a restroom close by. We have a neighbor girl 6th grade who has Krohn's - she wouldn't be able to function in the school, if she where having disease related symptoms.

And I'll just leave the "female" issues alone...I would think that would be enough reason to not have this type of policy.

They should start tracking UTI's.

The high school I sub at has a policy of no passes in the first or last 15 minutes of class. We have 110 minute blocks so I can see the need occasionally for needing to use the rest room. Of course the kids can use it during class but the teachers are another story.

I work in a middle school, and honestly I think that would curtail a lot of vandalism, and other things.

There isn't a lot of smoking, but there are other things going on.

Me, too. I think the idiots that come up with policies like this should subject themselves to the same thing they subject these kids too and see how they like it.
