Scary Weekend at the Fort

There is a way to express your opinion without being hurtful and insulting. To say someone's decorations are tacky weather you like them or not is just not being a very nice person. And that is one thing I think Walt would object to. Opinion' are one thing and being courtious is another.

...Halloween and Christmas Decorations are one of the attractions/reasons the Fort is PACKED during these times.

It's also the reason that people from all over (not staying at FW) start threads on the DIS about the best way to come tour the Fort during these times just to see the campers displays.

Oh and Samantha Brown seems to be a fan too and dedicated a whole segment in her holiday special a few years ago on decorations at the Fort. :santa:

::yes::

You know what they say, opinions are like...

well you know.... everybody's got one.

Doesn't mean you need to be mean spirited about it.

It's totally fine to disagree and say that you'd rather NOT see all the decorations at the Fort - although as PPs have pointed out, really easy to avoid them the majority of the year.

It's a whole other thing to ridicule the efforts of the people that go through the time and trouble of putting them together just because they're not your cup of tea.

And I really do love how people come on a message board they're allegedly quite familiar with and express an opinion in such a way that they know it's going to get a reaction. Then when they do, they get all defensive and start the name calling and accusations of people being clique-ish.

(is that even a word?)

Or dredge up arguments that have already been resolved for no apparent reason. Sorry, but why come on a thread celebrating the Halloween decorations and festivities at the Fort to just toss a big wet blanket on things?

Unless...

There are plenty of "I hate....." threads on the boards. If all you want to do is criticize and argue instead of participate in the actual topic/spirit of a particular thread, feel free to start one of your very own.

I for one would like to camp where there is nothing but nature. What I am seeing and reading is nobody cares that maybe people want to camp at FW and not have all that stuff there.

If you were there as I was it was very hard to find a site that didn’t have decorations on them. So it looks like most of the people at the Fort didn’t share the same feelings that you do.

If it's a rustic camping experience you are after I suggest that in the future you try to select campgrounds which don't have non-rustic amenities such as concrete pads, water, electric, sewer, cable TV, a buffet restaurant and dinner theatre, pizza delivery, a transit system, a petting zoo, trail rides and so much more.

Although most of us love it here, it's not for everyone!

I was going to butt out of the thread, but hey, I'm back.

I don't mean to offend anyone. If I have, I apologize. I promise I'm not being a troll. But I do have strong opinions and I tend to voice them. The things I'm posting I intend for open discussion.

Maybe the crowd has just changed over the years. Admittedly, it has been a long, long time since I've stayed at FW.

It seems now the crowd is less "camper" and more "RVer". Not that there's anything wrong with that -- it's just a different crowd and a different perspective.

Many RVers view their RV as their home away from home, and as such, tend to bring along all the feature comforts of home along with them.

Campers, on the other hand, tend to have a "back to the basics" perspective, one that doesn't include giant Mickey blowups.

It's a different crowd and a different mentality.

Is FW packed most of the time? Sure. There are a lot of RVers in the world.

Now, to all the people who have said to me, "If you don't like it, don't come!" or, "Maybe you should find somewhere else to camp!" I ask you to consider the following.

Suppose there is a neighborhood of 20 people. And let's say Jack lives next to Steve. Steve likes thumping gangsta rap music. And he likes it loud. So he plays it all day. All day long.

Jack does not like thumping gangsta rap music. So he asks Steve to turn it down. Steve tells him, "If you don't like it, move somewhere else!"

Twelve other people in the neighborhood also like gangsta rap music or are indifferent. So Steve even says to Jack, "You see? They like my music! The majority of people in the neighborhood like it. So I guess you should find somewhere else to live or buy yourself earplugs."

Now I ask you, is that right? Should Jack have to sit and listen to Steve's thumping rap music all day long? Steve argues that he has a right to play his music, but what about Jack's right not to have to listen to it?

Seriously, now. Think about it. I ask that you give it serious consideration: How are the two situations any different?

There was a time when there was greater consideration for other people in the world. There was a time when people would say to themselves, "You know what? My neighbors may not like this, so I better not do it." Instead people now say, "This is what I want to do, so I'm doing it. Screw everyone else."

Again, folks, just food for thought.

Can we just take this thread back to just showing pics that people want to see of the Fort that Halloween and not a debate.

Heres some more food for thought,,
I don't have to look at decorations if I so desire not to,,and if I'm try'n to listen to my own music or watch TV, or cook outside, etc,,the decorations aren't so LOUD that it bothers my hearing or keeps me awake at night.

Seriously ??? are you really try'n to compare hearing noise to the same as see'n decorations ??? Seriously ? Those two things are nothing alike !!

I gotta say,, if I don't like Victoria Secrets,,I DON"T GO INTO VICTORIA SECRETS!!
If I don't like football,,I DON"T GO TO FOOT BALL GAMES and then complain about them.

Man,, if there's a couple people who hate the decorations and/or campers at the Fort during Halloween,,they are REALLY gonna hate the Fort at Christmas time !!

Only in America does a group of 1 million people have to conform to likes of a single person,,,I just don't get it,,:confused3

Its apples and oranges. We are not talking about rights, but about preferences. I prefer the decorations at the Fort, make a point to visit and tour the campground. I love the effort of people sharing their enjoyment of the holiday. Some make me smile and some make me wonder. But they all show a love of wanting to share with others.

I'm not going camping in December, but I will be visting the Fort to see how it is decorated. Anybody else?

Again, folks, just food for thought.

By your own admission on your first post, you haven't been to the Fort in 23 years. By viewing a lot of pictures on the camping board, and again by your own admission, you don't like the way people decorate their campsites. I said it before and I'll say it again. Back when you last camped at the Fort people were just starting to go wild with site decorating. You didn't see much before 1987 because "blow-up's" hadn't been invented yet. Neither was rope lighting, LED lighting, character patio lights, etc, etc, etc. Holiday decorations have become a BIG business in the last 20 years or so. So naturally, this is going to extend over to campers - and even those who camp in tents & not RV's. The 2000 loop is crazy full of tenter's who also go all out decorating their sites.

I think this board has done you a great service by letting you know ahead of time that you're not going to like your surroundings if you stay at the Fort. How great is that? Now you have the opportunity to cancel your Fort reservations and book a site at Lake Kissimmee State Park, Lake Louisa State Park, or the Ocala National Forest. Not only will you save big $$$'s on the price of a site, you will also have the scenic view of nature and the serenity you have expressed a desire for.

I totally understand where you're coming from & am not dissing you. You are however, one person whose opinion differs vastly from the madding crowd. There will be lots of decorations at the Fort and you stating you don't care for them isn't going to stop anyone from decorating. Seriously...you might wish to consider a change of venue.

Great pictures!! We just got back from 2 weeks in the cabins this past Saturday. We were looking at the decorations and saying to each other "Hey, we saw that one and that one!"
One of the best parts of our whole trip was looping at night looking at the decorations. We did it every night without fail. :goodvibes I can't believe anyone wouldn't think the decorations were so much fun!

I didn't get to go and see the decorations so Thank you again for posting them. This grand ma loved them.:)

It is other campers second home and maybe they don't want to look at five 8 feet tall blowups across from them while camping. Trees are want I want to see! FW needs an HOA-lol!

Is that the best you can do? I could stir a better pot in my sleep.

Since nobody has ever gone to Disney to rediscover and commune with nature, I have to assume that you got bored and created a new ID to "start something." If you have been lurking on this board as long as you say you have, then you'd certainly be able to do a better job better than this.

Better luck next time. This one wasn't even worth reading.

Thanks for the pics! WOW! One of these years we're going to have to go down for Halloween!

Not to beat a dead horse, but this is exactly what I was thinking...here's my .02 for what it is worth (all of .02, really...) but my family likes a rustic experience when camping. DH and I were fairly avid backpackers until DS came along and we started car camping...bought our pop-up for a number of reasons, but it allows us to get out more. We tend to be small, quiet, state park sorts of folks...BUT (and there's always a big but, right?) when we go to the Fort or some other more commercial private CG, we expect it to be just a completely different experience! That's the beauty of camping and RV-ing...the experiences just completely run the gamut and we enjoy the ride wherever we are at.

Life is too short to worry about what other people consider tacky or not...if people are having fun and enjoying the company of family and friends, isn't that what it is all about?

Wow!!!. I love FW and it is one of the greatest places I know. I still feel telling people if you don't like it go elsewhere is a very self absorbed outlook. But anyway I just want to know what the decorating situation is the week before Thanksgiving. What should I prepare myself for Pumpkins, Turkeys, still Hallowen stuff, possibly a mix of some Christmas? I am hoping there won't be much stuff but I think there might be since the hostile blowup takeover.:goodvibes
