saving scraps

I keep my scraps in a brown paper bag under my scrap table. For me everything goes in the bag and I sort through as I need something.

I save pretty much everything, as long as I could use it for a punch or something. I have an accordian file with a section for each color, and one for prints.

I like the accordian file idea. Mine are just sort of all shoved together in a plastic sleeve. Very hard to sort through and I do save probably more than I need.

I made my goal today to clean up my scrapbooking room. stickers were sorted into ziplocks, then paper was sorted into files, and scraps were shoved in one big bag (i ran outa steam).

Funny - we just re-arranged our scraps in the past few days!

We save pretty much any size that is still punchable - and sad to say, I also bought big bags of great scraps (huge pieces of many premium papers that I sure would have kept!) at our LSS yard sale this summer. My DH was aghast that I actually bought someone else's trash! (Ha - for a buck - I got great stuff!)

We had all our scraps in a big cardboard banker's box, but it was overflowing and too tough to dig around in to find what we needed. So a few nights ago, Z2H and I spent a few hours (!) sorting the scraps into about 12 different main colors (patterns were sorted by whichever color was predominant) and then we used a large 2.5 gallon ziplock baggie to pack up each color. Just last night, I finally stood up all the large baggies up in a black plastic crate - looks great and much easier to use!

I have a cd holder that I put all my scraps that are about 4 x 6 and under in. With having a cricut I use my scraps for little pieces often.

I was starting to cut them into commonly used sizes (like to back journal boxes, toppers etc) in a lever arch file, but I got bored. So I have two ziplocks, one with plain and one patterned. I really need to sort them into an acordion folder - I have one which has some scraps and some full-size pieces. Basically I just need to get organised

I save scraps that are about 2 inches wide or bigger. They are sorted by color (brown, green, yellow, etc.) in file folders in a box next to my table. Patterned paper scraps are in their own folder, but it's getting a bit too full so I may need to come up with another idea for that.

How big are the 2.5 gallon bags? Do they hold 6x12?

Well, many years ago I just put all my scraps in a large drawer, right next to my scrapping table. It made clean up very easy. Then a few years ago I started separating them by "patterned paper" and "cardstock/plain paper" (each in its own large drawer).

I recently bought a set of six 12 x 12 drawers and I separated my cardstock/plain paper scraps by ROYGBIV (red/orange/yellow, green, blue, purple/pink, plus a drawer for browns/creams/tans and a drawer for black and white).

Then about two weeks ago I got disgusted with my patterned paper scrap drawer and I went through the ENTIRE DRAWER (dumped it on my bed). I organized the scraps and paperclipped together all the pieces of the same paper. I also clipped all of the Easter scraps together with a binder clip and the same with all of the Christmas scraps. Also, any coordinating lines I paper clipped each individual pattern and then binder clipped all of the coordinating scraps together. Anything stray or old or whatever, I put in a tote and have been bringing along places and punching circles and squares to have handy. I left all of this in the HUGE drawer they were in before, but they only take about about the bottom inch or two of the drawer. I like the idea of the large Ziploc bags, because the paper clips are catching on each other.... but it works for now.

Sorry to ramble................P

I'm back and forth on this one. First, I chucked everything. Then it was save any piece that fits your smallest punch, yeah well that was the micro mickey head punch.
Now I cut down things into shapes and sizes I need. 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 for mats, 3x3 for journal cards, I'll punch tags but that's about as small as I'll go now. I have my scraps sorted by individual papers in binders and page protectors. so like Bazzill Ruby Slippers is all in one page protector.

I have file folders by color.... and currently due to many projects I have a big ol' drawer that has scraps thrown in there.. my goal is to go through it this weekend and get it sorted accordingly.. when I sort, I toss the smaller pieces... :) I've been finding that keeping the scraps w/ in reach; I tend to use them more often!!!!

Yep - they hold 12x12s with room to spare. They're the reallyyy big bags.

Good to know. I used those bags for packing kids for a Disney trip but that was 5 years ago. I could not remember how big they were. I think I am going to try this bag system.

I use a lot of my scraps for cardmaking. Every once in a while, I go through the scraps and throw stuff away, even though it almost kills me

I sort by color and plain/patterned, plus I have a pile that's just basic grey paper. Love that basic grey.

My friends laugh at me when they come over to scrap...I throw nothing away. :lmao: I go through all the scraps and even the tiny bits that are unusable get put in the recycling, not the trash. :lmao:

I use the accordion file and sort by color. I have spots for red, white, black and yellow, but I usually just throw them in a handy drawer since I use them a lot and it nevers seems too full. I save at about 2 inches unless I am not in the mood.

My file is way too full though and I don't really have space or a plan for some other system.

I am not as vigilant about saving patterned paper scaps -- I tend to save only bigger pieces, and ones with straight edges (or I trim them straight). I put them either with the whole sheets or in a accordion file, but not in any way organized.

Maybe we should consider a Use Your Scraps Challenge in 2010:rotfl2:

It's almost embarrassing to say but I actually enjoy sorting my scrap paper - nerd I know.:confused3
