Sarah Murnaghan has cystic fibrosis and needs new lungs to save her life.

Not at all. But you can't tell someone not to have a child just because that child may need federal aid someday.

Seems to be reading a lot into the PP. OTOH, a lot of folks take the position that federal aid should not go to certain kinds of Americans if they have additional kids after receiving aid.

Back on topic! Has anyone heard how Sarah is doing? Just wondering!

I just saw a headline on NBC News that Sarah had a 2nd transplant?? Has anyone heard about this? That would mean her first transplant was rejected. This poor kid and family. Whatever you think about whether or not she should have jumped line, for lack of a better term, she certainly has been through hell. Prayers and good wishes for her and her family.

The lungs weren't rejected. It was a graft failure. Rejection takes weeks to months.

Acute Rejection can occur any time from the first week. Just so everyone knows that it does not always take time. I did not read the article and do not know if she is in rejection or not, but I would assume the parents/doctors are not going to disclose that information until every avenue has been resolved.

The door that was opened with this case is a disaster in my mind. How many sets of lungs does she get? Is she forever on the top of all transplant lists now?

I am struggling with this situation and I think that the transplant program has taken a step so far backwards that it will be a long time before it can be trusted again.

This is MY OPINION. I have been through the program with my father and I have to admit it makes me waiver on the current state of the program.

I am sorry, I was ok with her getting one set but not staying on top and getting more. I feel for her, I really do, but I cant help but think of whomever is second on the list.

I'm going to reserve judgment. If her age complicated things to precipitate her needing the second set, then I think it's clear they should make no more age exceptions. But doesn't this sort of thing happen in adults as well? If it were an adult then I'd say they obviously need priority on a second transplant.

It's not fair to the people who were at one point on the top of the list for the adults, she should have just stayed on the childrens' list. What are they going to do? Have her get countless lungs, and ignore those that are or have been on the list just as long? I'm not trying to sound heartless but I feel like what the judges or whoever allowed for this to happen has opened the door to make things more difficult for people.

It doesn't sound like her age had anything to do with it, however that what her parents are saying. I don't think they would admit it if her age did play a part because of the scrutiny they have been under.

I feel for them I really do, I can't imagine what they are going through and hope I never have to. I have had three friends who have had CF, one who passed away and two who are still around and don't need a lung transplant as of now. I just feel like they went about this wrong, and I don't agree with it.

I just hope that other people who need lungs don't have to keep waiting because the lungs keep going to a person who keeps rejecting them.

I disagree. I am still not sure that moving her to the adult list was the right decision, but I think that once the medical and legal communities decided to try this experimental procedure, they had a responsibility to do everything in their power to save her. Even, or perhaps especially, if it turns out that they made the wrong decision in the first place.

I didn't think she should be moved to the adult list in the first place, at least not in the way the decision was made, but now that she's there, I certainly hope that the transplant works and she is able to regain her health.

the mother said the first set failed
The second set was accepted despite knowing the lungs had pneumonia and the child is struggling and they have no idea at this point what the total outcome will be.
The entire situation is heart breaking....for the child, for the family, for those that were jumped, and their families...
for those that never made it to even get a transplant TRAGIC all around.

I cant judge and cant say what is right or wrong as I know that heaven forbid I was in the same place...Id try and do any and everything within my power to somehow get an edge for my loved one....to give them a chance....
Is it really about who screams the loudest after all? It shouldnt be....the system needs help....people need to make the Choice to donate...and this gut wrenching overall situation would not exist.
And while Im at it.....
Please donate your blood, its good for you physically and emotionally ...and its great for those that need it.....its quick and simple and Painless, really!! It really Helps!! But I digress...

To one and all.....Enjoy your weekend and may Good Health be on your side!!

This whole set of circumstances troubles me. Mom said things were going OK when they obviously were not. http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/local&id=9141838. The graft had failed and the new set of lungs were transplanted when she made these statements. After all the soul baring in order to get the lungs, why the sudden change and silence?

That raises the question of whether Sarah's access to a second set of lungs was influenced by the attention to her case, Caplan, the ethicist said.

"The decision to offer retransplantation of a very scarce resource awaited by others shows again that expertise and medical facts, not publicity and political pull, ought guide organ distribution," he said, "especially given that someone may well die who might have lived if organs go to another who stands a poor chance of surviving."

Sadly, the national debate is still on. Hopefully the surgeons performing the operation will be forthcoming to the decision makers about what effect the adult lungs, and any trimming, had on the failure of the initial transplant.

The family probably figured it would cause an explosion of even more attention they did not welcome into such a difficult time in their lives. They probably assumed it was in the best interest of their daughter. I would have likely advocated for an exception to the age restriction just as they did, and might have full well tried to keep the second operation under wraps as long as possible too.

That said, I expect the doctors to be honest. I think their experience on her case will prove quite valuable as an objective review of what happened takes place.

Prayers to Sarah and her family in this very difficult time.

The statement she made seems accurate to me. On June 15, before she received the second set of lungs, she was literally on death's doorstep with hours or days to live. On June 17, her odds of survival were better. "Baby steps in the right direction" seems accurate.

I don't agree with the decision that the courts made in this case, but I can't blame the parents at all, either for their decision to advocate for a change that could potentially save their child, or the decision to keep things private during a time when they thought their child was dying. I am also very very happy that it looks like Sarah might survive.
