I am sitting outside on a beautiful :sunny: Orlando morning, drinking my coffee :surfweb:from my new "MOM" mug that I treated myself to last night at EPCOT, so I figured what better time to write my review.

I am a bit intimidated to post this report, after the recent rave reviews of Mr Disney :worship: and his side kick - K-man pirate:

DD9 is doing a culture report for her end of year project (3rd grade) on Mexico. I was very happy when she came home with this country, as I knew that we would be able to "pop" over to EPCOT, and easily find lots of good things for her "culture box". As part of this research, we decided to eat at San Angel Inn. In all my 40something years, I have not eaten in an authentic Mexican or Tex-Mex restauarant, so I have nothing to compare the authenticity of the food - my review will be on how DD and I enjoyed our "Disney Dining Experience".

We arrived at EPCOt about 1 hr and 45 minutes prior to our ADR, and much to my surprise there were MANY people arriving at the same time - I guess with the combination of Illuminations and EMH many folks were coming for the evening.

We made a stop at SE, and the Mouse Gears - had to get a pair of Cinco De Mayo ears, the butterfly house, and DD played on the SpaceNet for a bit. when I realized it was 8pm. We needed to head to Mexico so we could do a little shopping, and the ride prior to dinner.

We arrived at Mexico (picture a bit blurry.... it was taken in a hurry between people crossing in front of me)

We did a little shopping for DD's culture box - some books, a flag, a maruca (sp) and a carved wooden snake made by the artisians in the front lobby. We then rode on the ride - which all though nothing exciting, is one I really enjoy!:boat: . One the ride was over, I checked us in at the podium.

The line was quite long, and I could tell from the others in line that many did not have an ADR, and I knew from my conversation earlier in the day with Disney Dining that they were most likely not going to be seated. Now this was me before finding the "DIS" being local, and many of our trips "spur of the moment", I never made ADRs, thus the reason we had never eaten here (or anywhere else in WS in the three years we have lived in Orlando). Now I always try to call to see what might be available to book!

We were promptly seated very close to our 8:45 ADR time. This made DD happy. She loses patience and interest in dining out when the wait is too long - thus another reason why we don't do TS very often (up until now!)

Our server promptly arrived at our table with a smile and a basket of chips and salsa. As I knew what we were ordering pretty much, she took our order right away. Fairly quickly after that our drink orders arrived.

For me - what I had been waiting for all day.....a top shelf Margarita on the Rocks....a very big margarita! In the background you can see DD tasting her Virgin Pina Colada - to which she exclaimed.... this is GOOOOOOD!

Soon after, my appetizer arrived, after much contemplation during the day after someone had suggested the Queso Fundido, I chose the
Sopa Azteca - Traditional tortilla soup with avocado, cheese and pasilla pepper (no picture available - it was blurry) I found this soup to be very tasty. There wer chunks of avocado, and strips of tortilla in what I guess was probably a tomato based broth (?). DD liked to dip her chips in the soup, as the salsa - although pretty mild by some standards had a little kick that was too much for her taste buds! (Another challenge when dining out with DD - everything is SPICY - to her!)

Not long after the soup arrived, and had cooled enough to partake of, our entrees arrived on VERY hot platters. It took about 5 minutes for the food to cool enough to eat - so if you like your food temperature HOT - this is the place! They certainly did not sit in the kitchen waiting to be delivered.

At this time I asked for a glass of water, as the margarita was kicking in - (I had a very empty stomach!)

I had made the decision before arriving at the restaurant to have the
Plato Mexicano - Beef Tenderloin Tampiquena, chicken enchilada, and ground beef burrito, served with refried beans and rice -

I liked the fact that I got to sample several things. The tenderloin had a wonderful flavor, and was very well... tender! The beef burrito and enchilada were extremely flavorful as well. I also enjoyed the black beans with cheese that were at the center of the platter! I had been saving up all day for this meal, and finished most everything on the platter with the exception of the rice, and some of the enchilada. You see, I wanted to be able to walk out of the restaurant.

DD chose the Quesadilla de Pollo - grilled flour tortilla filled with cheese and chicken, served with rice - however once it arrived, and cooled, she decided she was not really that hungry (after the chips and Pina colada). No problem, we were coming direcltly home when we left Mexico (cool Mexico to Orlando in 35 minutes....) so we had it boxed up.

At this time DD decided she needed a rest room break, and quickly came back for my camera to take pics of the rest rooms doors (my quirk to photograph odd things, and signs is wearing off.) - also they were in Spanish, and a good thing to note in her project.

While she was gone, I enjoyed watched dessert be delivered to the table next to us, and when I heard RICE PUDDING, I immediatley new I needed to make room. You see somewhere in Mr Disney's review of the dessert extravaganza(DD liked that idea a lot!) I remembered him mentioning Rice Pudding, which has been a fav of mine for many years (my grand mothers recipe of course). When the cup of rice pudding was delivered - it was just the right size to end the large meal. It was creamy, and very full of flavor - vanilla with cinnamon sprinkled on top. I am not one who can tell from one or two bites of food what each ingrediant is, but I know that the overall taste was enjoyable!

Rayna (on left) our CM, Tara and another CM to balance out the photo! I love the colors of the uniforms, and the chairs, as well as the architecture!

DD told me that this was a great place, and let us come again... hey Mom - Cinco De Mayo is next Friday - and you already have the hat.... so let's celebrate here! (note to self call Disney Dining in the morning - which I have done and we have 8:15 ADRs).

The fact that DD enjoyed the experiece (and oh by the way - the food too -straight out of the fridge this morning - a cold chicken quesadilla!) made this a postive Disney Dining Experience for me. I enjoyed the food, and my company. There was no whining, complaining or can't they hurry ups!

Yes the atmosphere is dark, and the tables are a bit crowded, but our table was not too bad - we were near the front of the restaurant just to the right of the steps. I love the impression that you are outside, and the temple and the volcano make a beautiful background! I took a photo again

Cost of meal $55 including tip (and DDE 20% discount) - for this meal, I basically tipped back the discount I received, as service was prompt and friendly!
I don't recall the indivudal prices, but I did notice that my entree was $20.50 and AllEARs had it as $19.50, so those prices a bit outdated.

1 margarita
1 virgin pina colada (not included in kids meal price)
1 soup appetizer
1 adult entree
1 children's entree
1 dessert

Cinco De Mayo ears for those who have not seen them!

So glad to read a review where someone liked the San Angel Inn. We really liked this place. We had the same exact dinner you had that night. The steak was very tender also for us when we went. This is the only World Showcase TS we have eaten at 2x's. For our trip in May I had to keep telling myself "No, Try something else!!!! Try someplace new!! Get ahold yourself girl !" :lmao:

Thanks for the review, and PICS! Looks like you had a great time.

So jealous that you live so close! :teeth:

Excellent review! I love all the details you took the time to include. Great pictures too - your DD is a real cutie. princess:

We enjoyed both of our meals at San Angel Inn. Glad to hear you enjoyed your meal there too. :)

Excellent review. This is also one of my favorite places to eat at Walt Disney World, and I have done so several times. (The steak was tender on St. Patrick's Day as well.)

Great review! I love the pictures. We weren't planning on eating here but you've got me rethinking my ADR's.

Mexico pavillion is my favorite...restaurant, too!

Glad you had a good time! :)

Thanks for the great review. I've been here once and enjoyed it. I have a question for you. Did you happen to notice if they still had the Queso Fundido appetizer on the menu? I loved that, but I thought I had read somewhere that it was no longer on the menu. Just wondering so I will know for my next trip. TIA

Yes, it was still on the menu, and if I had been there with another adult, I would have gotten it. Someone else had mentioned it was good!

Since we are going back for Cinco de Mayo on Friday, I may consider getting just the appetizer and a MARGARITA - and I think that will be my choice!

Thanks for the review. We have ADR there for Lunch in Sept. and I've been considering cancelling it due to all the neg. reviews. Now you've got me rethinking it again.

We ate there once years ago (1998 I think) and I don't remember much about it except it seemed a little $$ (but we're on the DDP in Sept. so who cares :rotfl2: ) and I remember the food being quite different from the Mexican food we get here (it's everywhere) in So. Cal (Corona). I'll have to reread the menu on allears again before I make my final decision but thanks :thanks: again for the great review and enjoy your Cinco de Mayo! party:

That margarita has me salivating like Pavlov's dog!!! We always enjoy our visits to San Angel. Did you notice if they still have the kahlua ice cream pie on the dessert menu? I have had that several times and it is YUMMY!
