Except for the occassional back-to-school promotions in some states, I've never heard of clothing being exempt from sales tax. Sales tax is different from state-to-state though.

I think it should depend on where your shipping to...In Minnesota we do not pay sales tax on clothes, ever so I wouldn't expect to be charged for it.

Could they be charging sales tax on the handling fee? I've seen this happen before.

Nope...I calculated and they added 6% sales tax to the total of the clothing. I just looked it up and from the official NJ website it says "In general, clothing and footwear are currently exempt from tax and remain exempt from tax." :confused3

In my county, everything is taxed. Groceries, clothes, fast food, services, etc. at 10%

Typically incorrect sales tax calculations come about when the software the company is using is incorrectly configured, or else doesn't know what is clothes and what is not. Whether clothes are taxed can vary county to county, and the classic example of the confusion is that handkerchiefs are taxable as clothes in some but not others. Hopefully Kohl's will get their system set up correctly, but sales tax is such a fiendishly complicated subject that they may not want to bother.

Usually, when I order clothes (to be shipped to NJ), the online receipt will reflect sales tax. When they ship, it's removed. I'd call and make sure that's going to happen.

We pay 6% on clothes in Michigan. Groceries are the only thing tax exempt in our state. Even if you drive thru (or sit-down in a restaurant) somewhere, you get charged tax because it's PREPARED food.

If you read Kohl's site, I think it's on the shopping cart page(s), they add tax and estimate shipping during the order process. Once you enter your shipping information your cart will be updated with the appropriate tax and shipping rate. Hope that helps. I had seen this, I think they are both links, when I was BTS shopping online for DD prior to the nearest Kohl's grand opening.

Confirming what I posted - on the Shopping Bag page. Below your order is the following text near the bottom

To estimate shipping, we take the number of addresses you're shipping to and the number of items you're purchasing, and calculate an approximate shipping cost based on our Standard Ground Shipping Costs.
To estimate tax, we take your Shopping Bag Subtotal and apply 6% sales tax, an estimate based on "typical" sales tax percentages nationwide. (Actual sales tax will be calculated based upon your Ship-to Address and the taxability of the items purchased.)

It is a state by state thing. We pay sales tax on clothes in Maryland but not Pennsylvania or Delaware, which hgad no sales tax.

We pay over 8% sales tax on clothes here. We have a county and a state tax. There is tax on some grocery items but not all.
