I applied for a part-time job at a company for which I worked previously. A friend (who still works for the company) told me about the job. She had applied for it but did not have the qualifications. At any rate, she was able to tell me a lot about the position, including what it pays.

Well, today an HR person called me to set up an interview. During our conversation, she told me the hourly rate. I said "I think that sounds okay." In all honesty, I had no idea what the hourly rate amounted to annually. After I hung up, I figured the annual salary (based on the hourly rate the HR person mentioned) and realized it was about 30% less than what my friend told me it paid.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but my question is this: If they do offer me the position, would I be out of line to try to negotiate a higher hourly rate even though I was told the rate prior to my interview and said it sounded okay at that time?

You didn't have all the information about the job at that point so just tell them that with the responsibilites that were explained you would expect a of $XX.xx/hr. and be prepared to walk if you they don't offer it to you.

Thanks for the reply. I like your suggestion. Whatever they pay me would be more than I'm making now as a SAHM. :) Still, I want to feel as if it's worth it to go back to work, you know?

I'm a little rusty on this salary stuff. LOL!

Salary negotiation after an offer has been made is perfectly acceptable (and often desirable). I've done it a few times, especially if there are other offers in hand. Ask for what you think you're worth + a little extra and negotiate from there. Sometimes you'll be pleasantly surprised. Good luck! :thumbsup2

If you knonw the range of the position, I would definitely ask for somewhere between the minimum and the midrange. Get what you can now, because it will be a lot harder to get it later.

If they are interested, they will likely counter you and you can maybe come to an acceptable amount within the range. Or you could possibly come to an agreement in writing that puts you where you want to be after your probationary period.

Good luck!

If this helps to make sure your correct on the salary....

to get the annual salary from an hourly rate you muliply the hrly rate x 2080.

ie....$11 hr x 2080 = annual of $22,880.00

there are 2080 work hrs in the year..and yes I do payroll for a living. ;) ;) ;)

I just realized you said part time--- 2080 is based on a 40 hr week.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. :)

Yes, this is a part-time position--25 hours a week (5 hours a day).
