They are not but we are traveling as a group and I want to make sure we are all safe getting there and back

Since you said you are not responsible for the team, it may help your anxiety by letting this go and leave the planning to the coaches and the other girl's parents. Don't take on extra worry. Plan your trip, with your family, and don't worry about what others are going to do.

Well, I don't recall getting bashed when I was thinking of going to NYC and was asking for safe hotels etc....Must be New Yorker's are more sensible Southern people.

I think if you use reasonable care and plan to have a good time, you will.
I also think if you plan to be worried and fearful you may not have as pleasant a trip.
Often we find what we expect.

Here in Rochester (western NY) we had a rally/protest yesterday that ended with ~75 arrests. I had a number of friends there, although none arrested. Reports vary widely as to what happened (I've heard both that it started with peaceful intentions and got rough after dark when additional people got involved....or that some people showed up ready to start violence from the beginning) but I'm aware of no major property damage, etc.

I am not afraid to go into Rochester today, fwiw.
