Safety question ?

Here in Rochester (western NY) we had a rally/protest yesterday that ended with ~75 arrests. I had a number of friends there, although none arrested. Reports vary widely as to what happened (I've heard both that it started with peaceful intentions and got rough after dark when additional people got involved....or that some people showed up ready to start violence from the beginning) but I'm aware of no major property damage, etc.

I am not afraid to go into Rochester today, fwiw.

ETA: Yep. Msjprincess posted it before I did. I didn't realize we'd made national news.
It's the fear of people going there ready to make trouble and cause damage

How? Other than apples grow in the north and oranges in the south.

Your question was specific about day to day safety in an unfamiliar city. The OP is concerned about traveling to a beach community that doesn't require going near any major city because of issues in other parts of the country.

Had her question been about safety in Virginia Beach it would have been apples to apples.

You should definitely just stay home.

I agree! Sounds like the OP is thinking of traveling and wondering about her safety in some third world war torn country - and that I would have understood - this, no! Sounds like her nerves/fears cannot handle a trip now - or never, as this sort of thing is kind of like the norm now, unfortunately.

The tossing of rocks at the cops and lots of people getting arrested
Actually I just googled and read about the incident from several sources. The most notable thing was that two reporters were detained (one actually arrested) and have since received apologies from both the police chief and the mayor for what was done to them. Many people find detaining and arresting reporters disturbing in a democracy.

Actually, it's exactly the same.

She's traveling to an unfamiliar city and wants day to day safety info. She just has farther to travel than I did, and I believe part of my questions were safe ways to get into and out of the city. How is it different? And trust me, at least to me/compared to where I live, Virginia Beach is most definitely city.

*mumbles to herself*

Two kinder eggs..
One NON rutting moose
Hockey stick

Anyone have a request? I'm not turning around once I get started..

Oooo, well, if you're bringing in contraband...
A couple of kindereggs this way, please.
And maybe some decent hockey players for the Avs and the Coyotes....
(make them look like Stephen Amell, k?)

Well, if Patrick Laine isn't settling in there, looks like Evander Kane's spot will be open soon. You could bring him along with you.

We are supposed to go to Virginia beach in a few weeks for a softball tournament. Do you think we should be worried driving down that way with all the stuff going on with the black lives matter events going on.

Yes. Stay at home. Build a bunker.

I wish this was not the new norm. We should not have to live day to day in fear that something bad is going to happen. Ever since 9/11 happened we all have to watch what is around us at all time. We no longer have that care free American attitude that we had when I was growing up in the 90's.

There have always been things to worry about since the dawn of time. You are an adult now. You are more aware of what's going on. Not that there is anything more in the world to worry about.

I have not seen a convincing report that there were rocks thrown. None of my friends saw that happen and I have not yet seen a news outlet say that it is more than a rumor. Also, no one was charged with assaulting police, which I assume they would have been. Not saying it didn't happen, just that I'm not yet convinced it did.

Those that were arrested were sitting in the middle of the road, blocking it.

It seems if you are concerned about the rocks and arrests you can safely a.) turn around and drive elsewhere if you come across a very large group of people while driving through the middle of the city and b.) not sit down and block the road.

Well, my bad. You might have made national news, but you didn't make the news in Buffalo! :rotfl2:

It wasn't too carefree for me in the good 'ole 90's. My husband went to war and multiple deployments. Still, I woke up every day and made it my business to be positive for him, myself and our kids.
Kids sense fear, unease and insecurity. I didn't want them to experience that, and they didn't.

The point? It's a choice to wake up and decide today is going to be a good day, challenges and all.
I hope you're able to enjoy your daughter's softball games. Those years fly by. Treasure them.
The world will never be perfect.

I can't speak for you, but having an awareness should be the norm for all people. It doesn't mean you should live in a bunker, or never go anywhere. Just be smart about it. And then have fun!

On a plane they tell you where the exits are, and where your seat cushion is. In a movie theater they tell you where the exits are. Traveling on the highway, you should have an awareness of where an alternate route is. Doesn't make you crazy, just prepared and aware.
