Here's the situation:

On Thursday, DS is going to Minneapolis with his high school choir to see "Les Mis".

They are leaving from 4th period, at 11:38 (and yes, they were that specific that it was listed as 11:38 on the permission slip).

They are to bring a sack luncn to eat on the bus.
NO peanut products.

So, what to pack for him, that he will take to school at 7:30 in the morning, that will keep until 11:38, that doesn't need to be refrigerated or microwaved, and doesn't have peanuts?

A cheese sandwich is all I can come up with. Plus chips, pop, apple, etc.
Any other suggestions?

Give him a turkey sandwich. Put a small disposable ice pack in there if your worried, but I think it will be just fine - especially if he doesn't care for mayo.

Just make him a sandwich of his choice.. ham turkey etc and put the bottle of water in the freezer overnight.. it will act like a ice pack and thaw for him to drink for lunch.. I do this daily with my kids.

My DS16 packs his lunch every day...he leaves at 7 am and eats at like 10:50 (first lunch). He takes a lunchmeat sandwich daily. He's been doing this for 3 years now, and has never gotten sick. I think your DS will be fine. Plus, it's cold out, which helps.

There are so many preservatives in lunch meats, vinegar in mayo will preserve it as well, I personally would not worry about it unless it was going to be locked up in a vehicle in a super warm area of the country.

I'd make him whatever it is he will eat. You could freeze a GoGurt and use that as an ice pack or as others have said a water bottle. Refrigerated apple slices and mini carrots will also help to keep the lunch cool.

Was just thinking of this myself today. My DS16 is going on a field trip tomorrow with his Electrical shop class. Going to keep reading for more ideas.

I sent my kids off to school with pepperoni and ham sandwiches today, no ice pack. Yogurt, cheese and crackers, a bagel... Plenty of choices.

I would worry if you lived in Phx in the summer, but Minny in the winter should hardly be a concern

Thanks for the replies.

I guess I'm a bit worried as DS has had a bit of a stomach bug this week. Not enough to keep him out of school, but some urgent runs (literally) to the bathroom, if you know what I mean.

So I hate to poison him on the trip up there and have him miss the show.

My mom sent me to school with a sandwich (deli meat and butter or deli meat and mayo) in a paper bag. It was never refrigerated and I never got sick from it. I wouldn't have a concern about getting sick from the lunch meat spoiling in 4 hours.

I would send him with some chewable Pepto tablets if his stomach is upset. I couldn't think of anything worse than needing to urgently go to the bathroom while on that school bus.

A packed lunch won't poison him. Poor kid tho, hope he is up to the trip. Stomach issues and a school bus ride may not always go hand in hand

That's nice you still make his lunch for him and he's in high school!

I was on my own in the lunch making department long before that!

It's purely for nutritional purposes!

If left to his own, he would pack Oreos, potato chips, pop and chocolate.

We do this as well. The kids have also been know to grab one of those small lunchables - the ones with just the meat, cheese and crakers - and take that as well as a sandwich. You just never know how hungry the teen boys will be at lunch.

Thanks to all!

The chewable Pepto tabs are a good idea. Fortunately, he is getting better. And I think they are taking a charter bus - the ones with an "emergency" bathroom onboard.

But I'm sure his friends would appreciate him NOT using that one!

I also suggest "Bonding" type foods, not a lot of fiber. Cheese is at the top of this list. Maybe a cheese sandwich on white bread. Dont temp irregularity.

Speaking as the wife of a Crohn's sufferer ... plain pasta. Pack some tomato sauce (meat or no meat, whatever is his preference) on the side. No cheese. (Dairy not good at times like this.)
