MOSCOW (Oct. 26) - Two male hostages were killed and a male and female hostage were wounded early Saturday in the standoff at a Moscow theater, said Pavel Kudryavtsev, an official at a command center handling the crisis.
The report came minutes after gunfire and explosions shook the area for the second time during the night.
After an initial unsuccessful try, officials established contact with the hostage-takers by telephone, Kudryavtsev told ORT television.
The hostage-takers had threatened to begin killing their captives by sunrise Saturday if their demands for Russia's withdrawal from Chechnya weren't met.
Kudryavtsev's announcement came at about 6 a.m. local time.
The woman wounded was hurt in the stomach, and the man suffered a head injury, Kudryavtsev said.
