Running Renaissance: One Skip Ahead of my Doom

Yeah, that was annoying for the 10K, the volunteers for the 5K and half were happy enough to just be told the number off the sticker, but the guy was manhandling my bib to look at the sticker himself, and it’s like, “dude, I still need this thing in one piece tomorrow, you know.”
My biggest problem was just that I didn't realize I would need to access it again when they gave it to me. Had I known that, I would have just stuck it to the front somewhere so I had easy access.

Wine & Dine Half Marathon 2022 Recap

Pre race
We woke up just after 2a and made it to the first bus just before 2:30a. I knew we had extra time this morning so I told my mom we were going to get pictures with Genie if he was out. Of course he wasn't, but it was so early we decided to get photos with max and Elvis Stitch (we have a lot of really great photos but I'm not sure how my mom would feel about me posting them so prepare for lots of words and not many photos).

My mom was very very nervous. She only took up running in the last few years and the furthest she made it in training was 10 miles. She is fairly active otherwise so I kept encouraging her and telling her that we'd be fine. Anyway, we headed to the corrals right when they opened because she wanted as much cushion as possible. During the walk she asked me where the start line was. 🤣. I thought that I had warned her about the walk out, but maybe not. 2000 steps later and we were in our corral and my mom found a seat by the rail. We spent the time talking to other runners and doing some dynamic warm ups, which were once again challenging due to how crowded it gets.

Race Time!
My mom kept telling me her goal was 3 hours. She ran the 10K in 95 minutes so I insisted that 3:30 would be a much more reasonable goal. I didn't know what the official conversion would be, but I knew there was no way we were going to run faster than she did the day before.

We ran the first mile in 13:39 which made me a bit nervous that we went out too fast. The next several miles were right around 15mm so we found our groove after that quick start. I really enjoyed running at this more relaxed pace as it allowed me to take in more of the sights than I had the day before. I made sure to point out the Christmas decorations to my mom which she had totally missed the day before.

The big goal for the race was to cross the finish line. I knew with the later start and the slower pace, that I wouldn't stop for nearly as many characters as I did in the 10K. I also knew that with my mom as nervous as she was that we needed to make it to mile 6 before we even considered getting in a line. The other goal for the race was to stop for a selfie with Gertie 😁. Some kind stranger took a photo of the two of us but apparently missed the memo that I wanted the dino and not the tree in the background. Luckily, I had snapped a proper selfie just in case.

Shortly after, we ran through star wars land and then into Toy Story. I can't really explain why, but for some reason seeing Woody with his guitar made me want to stop. The line wasn't too long so I was able to convince my mom that we should stop. The line moved quickly and my mom was able to rest up a bit for the second half.

On the way to the exit, we saw Mickey and his long line for photos. Mickey is my mom's favorite but she didn't want to wait in line so we kept going.

From here it was onto the highway miles. I know this is unpopular opinion, but I didn't mind them. I like being able to see all the other runners and their outfits. However, my mom did not obey the number one rule of race day: nothing new. She was taking Powerade at the aid stations even though she never drinks sugar. I think she was worried about how hot and humid it was but she should have been worried about her gi system because we needed to find a potty asap. Fun fact, they don't put the potties on the race map. And we're on the open road so I make a reasonable guess that we just need to get to the next medical area about half a mile away. We ended up walking most of this mile but we made it to the potties with no issues which were fortunately before the med tent. I had told my mom just to throw her underwear in the toilet if she needed to but she was relieved it didn't come to that 🤣.

Anyway, we survived that near disaster and started running again. After mile 10, our walk portions became longer but we were still moving quite quickly. I was very impressed by my mom's ability to keep walking at such a good pace. She was still very nervous about finishing but I knew we could walk the whole thing in if we needed at that point so I just tried to keep her moving forward.

We had heard some runners talking about figment being on the course up ahead and decided we would stop for him. I was disappointed it was just a statue. I was hoping that they were trialing the new meet and greet character (maybe for marathon weekend 🤞). However, that did mean there wasn't really a line so it was a quick stop. After that I did my best to hold it together while we ran toward the finish. My mom apparently didn't notice that I was crying so I was at least somewhat successful.

In the distance we can hear the choir and then it's onto the finish! Our finishing time was 3:31, just barely over our goal but I couldn't have been more proud!! My mom is a half marathoner!

Post Race
I immediately hugged my mom and told her how proud I was. She was still in disbelief that she did it. She was really struggling those last few miles but kept on going. She even thanked everyone that cheered for us along the entire course. She still swears she's sticking to shorter races from now on and that's fine with me. It was a great morning and a great race.

WDW Marathon Training - Week 7/15
giphy.gif

This week started so strong and I was feeling quite good about my training but then the sickness happened. I noticed a scratch in my throat on Tuesday and by Thursday it was full on coughing and fatigue. Strangely no fever and both COVID tests were negative but I'm still keeping myself quarantined and sleeping in the guest room ☹️. Maybe I should have prefaced that with a spoiler alert, but as you can guess, not much running in the second half of the week.

Scheduled
Monday - Easy 7 mi
Tuesday - Speed 4x1200m
Wednesday - Off
Thursday - M tempo 8 mi
Friday - Easy 5 mi
Saturday - Easy 8 mi
Sunday - Easy 10 mi

Completed
Monday - Easy 7 mi - my mom was very shocked that I was going running after the half the day before so I had to remind her that I was training for the marathon and the half was just a long run so it wasn't all that different from any other week. We were staying at All Star Movies which isn't really a great place to run but a quick look at a map revealed that there was a sidewalk all the way to Coronado so I decided to check it out. I'm glad I did because Coronado was lovely to run around.

For anyone curious, here's my route. I wouldn't recommend following my path at Coronado because I was mostly just trying not to get lost but the sidewalk there is completely safe with crosswalks where needed so I highly recommend checking it out if you have a longer run in the area.

Tuesday - Speed 4x1200m - I was out for my run by 6:45a which isn't normal for vacation but I was trying to beat the heat. It was still very humid and my legs were a bit sore from the 10K still so I told myself to just see what I could do and not worry too much. My pacing was all over the place but oh well. I felt that it was a good effort and a good run.
Wednesday - Off -
Thursday - M tempo 8 mi - I had very little energy and lots of coughing so I decided rest was more important than one measly run. Hattie was happy for the cuddles.
1D1DD590-C25A-47AF-978C-8BAA212850F0.jpeg
Friday - Easy 5 mi - much of the same as the day before
Saturday - Easy 8 mi - okay, one more rest day and then I'll just go for easy minutes tomorrow. Ha, what a silly idea.
Sunday - Easy 10 mi - I really wanted to be better by now. Partially so I could start running again but also because it was the Girls on the Run 5K celebration. Sadly, I was still coughing up a storm and running out of energy with the most basic of tasks. I was able to take the dogs on a walk at least!

So.... Yeah. Training has taken a sharp, unexpected turn. 😩 It's Monday now and I really wanted to get something done today but I still don't have the energy. I do feel moderately better so maybe tomorrow? Please send lots of good vibes that I'll be running again before the weekend. I'm scheduled for my first 16 miler but that kind of seems doubtful at this point. It'd be nice to at least get something!

Happy running y'all! I sincerely hope your running is going better than mine.

Feel better!!! It’s okay to rest. If you don’t when you need to, your body will make you do it anyway in my experience.

The flu is going around here. It's been bad enough that some schools closed a few days. I hope you feel better soon!

Boo to being sick! But thanks for the heads-up on the sidewalk route. I don’t do training runs on vacation, but knowing I could walk to that McDonalds if I’m hungry and bored at CSR or the All-Stars is useful information.

Yeah, another thanks for the running route. Didn't realize you could reach CSR from the AllStars

Hope you feel better soon 🤗 you'll be back to your speedy self in no time

WDW Marathon Training - Week 8/15
giphy.gif

I am happy to report that after missing 5 days of running, my training is nearly back on track. I still have a bit of a cough but it's minimal and so is the fatigue. Thanks everyone for the well wishes! I definitely think it worked because Tuesday was the first day that I managed to stay off the couch for several hours due to exhaustion. Before I spoil the whole week, let's review. I took the liberty to update my plan to only easy runs so what you see isn't really the official plan, but what my plan was given the circumstances.

Scheduled
Monday - Off
Tuesday - Easy 3 miles
Wednesday - Easy 5 miles
Thursday - Off
Friday - Easy 5 mi
Saturday - Easy 8 mi
Sunday - Easy 10 mi

Completed
Monday - Off - still felt like crap and was debating going to the doctor since it had been nearly a week. Decided that I'd go on Tuesday if things were still going downhill.
Tuesday - Easy 3 miles - I was feeling about 70% of my usual self and decided that was enough to see if my body could tolerate a little running. I set the treadmill to 5mph and just let it ride. Run was good and I was very relieved. ☺️
Wednesday - Easy 5 miles - normally Wednesday is my rest day but I decided to postpone it since I hadn't really been running. Winter is here and since I still wasn't 100%, it was another treadmill test and I passed 👩🏼‍🎓
Thursday - Off
Friday - Easy 5 mi - nothing too exciting here, pretty much a repeat of Wednesday.
Saturday - Easy 8 mi - I haven't really done any cross training since I've been sick but I spent 2.5 hours hauling, assembling, and fluffing our 12 ft Christmas tree so I feel like that has to count for something. 🤷‍♀️ Decorations had to wait for another day but here's a photo with about half the lights in it.

it was also wicked windy out. Sustained winds of 30+ mph and gusts in the 50s. I wanted to get outside for this run, but given the conditions, I was back on the treadmill. My arms were itching like crazy and I was worried it was hives but at some point I realized it was just the sweat agitating all the little scratches that I got from my Christmas tree 🤦‍♀️
Sunday - Easy 10 12.4 mi - I was feeling really good with how the week was going so decided to bump this up to 12. Officially, the plan called for my first 16 miler but I wasn't quite feeling that confident. I went to a nearby lake so I could run 4 mile loops. This turned out to be a great idea because I definitely needed that third water bottle. It also allowed me to ditch all my extra layers. It's been a while since I've run in below freezing temps and I had no idea what to wear. The feels like was 11 when I started 🥶. I thought that gloves, buff, and a jacket were a good idea but once I did my warm up exercises, I realized none of that was needed so ultimately it was just leggings, long sleeves, and an ear band. Even the leggings were a bit warm by the time I finished. I may be part snowman ⛄️.

I'm really happy with how things turned around and thankful that there's still 7 weeks until race day. Any closer, and it really would have thrown a wrench into my plans. As it stands, I should be able to jump right back in without much alteration.
😁😁

Happy running folks!

Glad to see you are feeling better and gettin back on track. And I LOVE your 12ft tree. We are a multiple tree family but none are more than 7.5ft. I love the idea of a giant tree in a house!

One of the reasons we bought our home was so there was room for the tree 🤣. It's the first year that we've had it in the new place and I am thrilled to finally have it up again after spending two Christmases in an apartment.

WDW Marathon Training - Week 9/15
giphy.gif

Well, we've reached the point of marathon training where I am hungry ALL OF THE TIME. I guess I'll add not feeling guilty about eating all the holiday goodies to the list of reasons why training for an early January marathon is the ideal timing for me. I do try to keep it healthy but I have no regrets about that second serving of stuffing on Thursday 😋.

Scheduled
Monday - Easy 5 miles
Tuesday - Strength 6x1mi
Wednesday - Off
Thursday - M Tempo 5 miles
Friday - Easy 5 mi
Saturday - Easy 8 mi
Sunday - Easy 10 mi

Completed
Monday - Easy 5 miles - My legs were a bit sore on Monday after the 12 miler the day before. This actually pleased me because it confirmed that 12 was a good balance between hard but not too hard. The easy run was able to work out the soreness and I felt much better.
I also hung up my W&D medals. I still need to hang more boards for my non Disney medals, but I'll get to that eventually 🙃

Tuesday - Strength 6x1mi - This was my first strength workout and I wasn't sure how it would go. Under normal conditions, I knew I could handle the pace but I wasn't sure if I had recovered enough from the sickness. Other than the first interval being a liar, the other intervals were all pretty close. This gave me more confidence in my tempo run on Thursday and I decided to bump it from 5 to 8 miles. Officially, it should have been 9 but with W&D and not running for nearly a week, I hadn't run the 8 yet so running 9 wasn't even a thought.
Wednesday - Off Easy 5 mi - We were going to be traveling home very early on Friday and had a busy day planned so I rescheduled that run to Wednesday. I had some pain in my right quad. This isn't the first time that I've felt the pain while running, but it was the first time that I could identify it was from muscle tightness. Definitely need to refocus some of my energy on stretching!
I also saw my second bald eagle of the season. They're a lot of fun to watch fly around and I'm happy for the distraction.
Thursday - M Tempo 5 8 miles - As mentioned, I upped this to 8 miles. Typically I would run a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving but all the nearby ones were 5Ks and it's no secret how I feel about those 😝. Plus, with the last few weeks being off plan, I decided it was best to skip it this year.
I still had to get my miles in though and dinner was scheduled for noon but we were going to leave around 10a so I needed to start my run by 8a. Not really a big deal except we were in Wisconsin and it was below freezing. Also not a big deal except that it left the trail very icy in spots. I wasn't really expecting that and it definitely impacted my pace. I also had some tummy troubles and was beyond thankful to find a potty in the middle of my route 😬. Anyway, probably needles to say, but this run did not go well. I'm going to give it another try this week so fingers crossed that it goes a bit better 🤞

Friday - Easy 5 mi Off
Saturday - Easy 8 mi - I did not sleep well and was very tired for this run. I really wasnt sure how it would go but knew that I needed to try. I gave myself permission to turn around early but it never came to that.
We also finished our outdoor Christmas decorations. My favorite part is this Santa that we have peaking out the window 👀
328DB0CB-2485-4E8A-B222-E5A887DB8AA2.jpeg
Sunday - Long 10 mi - This run went really well. Especially when compared to the 8 miles the day before. I felt strong throughout. I did have some arch pain in my left foot 😖. Another reminder to do my stretching, which I actually completed this time 😁.

Another successful week in the books. I'm just over 50% completed with the plan mileage wise and feeling good. We'll see how I feel after my first 16 miler next week though 😆

Happy running!

I have two more trees that I could put out, but our basement is still a mess from moving (in February 🙈) so I don't want to add to that clutter and I'm running out of rooms... Although now I realize I could definitely make space in our master 🤣. We'll see, still might focus that extra time on sifting through the last of the moving boxes or baking cookies.
