Running Renaissance: One Skip Ahead of my Doom

I picked up the book solely due to how much r/AdvancedRunning talks about it. It's a nice, structured plan just like Hanson's, but it seems pretty high-mileage. I'd like to try it someday too; I'd bet it works best if your body can take that much mileage (I'm not entirely certain I can, at least not right now). I also think I probably spend too much time on Reddit.
I probably also spend too much time on Reddit 🤣. From what the internet tells me, there's a pftiz plan that maxes out at 55 miles which isn't all that different than the plan I'm on right now with a peak week of 57. I haven't read the book though so I don't know very much about the rest of it. I think those 55 miles might only be on 5 days a week which would mean longer runs since Hanson is 57 on 6 days per week.

The biggest critique I’ve read against the Pftiz plan is it has a flipped specificity. Towards the end of the plan it shifts to partially focusing on 5k/10k pacing. Kind of like a reverse Hansons.
Interesting. I wonder why that is. Now I may need to find the book just to read more about it!

I'd definitely recommend reading the book as it still has really good information. Someone on Reddit put together a really great Google Sheets template of the 18/55 plan, where all you have to do is fill in your race date and your paces, and it takes care of the rest for you. I'm not sure if I can post the link here though... but I found it on r/AdvancedRunning a while back, you could probably find it there if you search.

WDW Marathon Training - Week 2/15
giphy.gif

Two weeks in and I already missed a run 😭. Not exactly the strong start that I was planning. The worst bit is that I was fairly certain that I wouldn't be able to run on Tuesday so I thought about moving that run to Monday but ultimately decided to try to stick to the plan. Ughhh. I guess the lesson here is that if I'm 85% sure that I need to reschedule a run, I should go ahead and do that instead of hoping for the best.

Scheduled
Monday - off
Tuesday - Easy 5 mi
Wednesday - off
Thursday - Easy 4 mi
Friday - Easy 5 mi
Saturday - Easy 4 mi
Sunday - Easy 6 mi

Completed
Monday - off - no running but I did do my strength workout. It isn't much, just some body weight exercises but it's something. The goal is to do this 3x per week on MWF.
Tuesday - Easy 5 mi - I got very little sleep and my body ached the entire day. I barely got off the couch. The culprit? I received my flu shot and COVID booster on Monday. I've had bad reactions in the past so I suppose this isn't too surprising but I was really thinking I'd at least be able to go for a walk. Hopefully the vaccines will prevent me from getting really sick later in the plan and missing multiple workouts.
Wednesday - off - magically felt like a new human on Wednesday. I really don't know how it's possible because I felt horrible the entire day on Tuesday. Bodies are weird. Did my strength training 💪
Thursday - Easy 4 mi - I read some running advice recently that said if you have the choice between flat or hills, you should always choose hills. With this in mind, I ran the opposite direction than normal. This only meant 70 ft of elevation but it would have been half that otherwise 🙃.
Friday - Easy 5 mi - accidentally ran 1/4 too far but that was the only thing worth noting.
Saturday - Easy 4 mi - my right knee was a bit grouchy before the run which I assumed was just my brain trying to trick me. The knee felt fine the entire run but my quad did tighten up over the last half mile. It was a good reminder that I totally neglected the strength workout the day before so I squeezed that in afterwards. Also, probably need to find a post run or evening stretching routine. 👀
Sunday - Easy 6 mi - I was not excited about this run. It seemed soooo far. Compounding my anxiety was the fact that 6 miles is NOT FAR when you're marathon training. How was I going to survive if I couldn't get through 6 measly miles?!? 😬
After watching the Chicago marathon and baking my favorite 11 year old some pumpkin pupcakes, I reluctantly headed out the door. Guess what? The run was fine. It was beautiful outside and I actually finished with more energy than when I started. I was tempted to run another mile or two but headed home to save my legs for the big week ahead in which my weekly mileage will pretty much double 😳

In case anyone was confused by who is my favorite 11 year old, it's Bucky 😍

So, not the best week, but ended it strong. Happy running my friends!

Yes!!! I need to schedule mine.
Also, probably need to find a post run or evening stretching routine.
My favorite stretch routine if I have only time for a few is to go from lizard to half split to resting pigeon. Could probably add a variation of mermaid in there to target quads better. Maybe try that out?

I love Bucky and hope Bucky enjoyed their pumpkin pupcakes!

Can you explain this to me as if I'm someone who has never done yoga?

To say that I was nervous about this week would be an understatement. I was worried about the bump in mileage. I was worried about my first marathon paced workout. I was worried about what I had gotten myself into.

The worry was all for naught because this week couldn't have gone any better than it did, well maybe a tad better but it certainly beat all expectations.

Scheduled
Monday - Easy 4 mi
Tuesday - Speed 12x400m
Wednesday - off
Thursday - M tempo 5 mi
Friday - Easy 4 mi
Saturday - Easy 8 mi
Sunday - Easy 8 mi

Completed
Monday - Easy 4 mi - nice and easy run. I decided to take the flatter route because my legs were a bit sore. I also decided to move my strength to Tuesday/Thursday because the soreness was from squats on Saturday and I want to keep my easy days easy.
Tuesday - Speed 12x400m - I was excited for this run because I genuinely enjoy speed work. I had decided to aim for 5K speed (7:36/mi or 1:54/400) and was a bit nervous about going out too fast and blowing up on the back half. 5k pace is really easy for 400m but not that easy on the 12th repeat. Well, imagine my surprise when I realized the repeats were 400m and not 200m. I'm really not sure why I thought they were only 200 but I had to double check during one of the rest intervals because I was convinced I had setup the workout incorrectly. Regardless, this run went really well. 10/12 repeats were within 2 seconds of the goal and the other 2 were still within 3 seconds. I did cut my cooldown about 1/10mi short because I ran into this floof and she wanted to go for a walk 😝

I also did my strength training ✅
Wednesday - off
Thursday - M tempo 5 mi - I am historically very bad at tempo runs. It takes me awhile to get up to speed and I usually get stuck in my head. I will always be the person who was ecstatic to break 30 min in a 5k so the idea of going sub 9 for 26+ miles is mind boggling. Even doing that for 5 miles can be a mental struggle in training. However, this run went surprisingly well. I was a bit slow on the first mile but picked it up after that and finished with an average run pace of 8:37, 4 seconds faster than desired. I'll keep my eye on slowing down a smidge but for now I'm still basking in the accomplishment that was completing this run.
Also, it was VERY windy. 30mph with 50 mph gusts. At some point during my out and back, this tree fell over the trail. I'm really glad it didn't fall on anyone but I guess I'll need to add falling trees to my running fears 😳

After this run I did my strength training and tried some lower body focused yoga from Nike training club. I had no idea what a half split was earlier this week, man did I feel it. My favorite pose was the butterfly though because it included massaging my foot which all of a sudden started bothering me for this run. Also, the dogs were very confused why I was on the floor and not petting them. 🤷‍♀

Friday - Easy 4 mi - This was a beautiful morning and I learned that long sleeves, capris, and a buff around my ears are the perfect outfit for these 30 degree runs. Unfortunately, my left arch was still bothering me during the run 😣

Not directly running related, but we also had our hot tub delivered. We ordered it in August 2021 so it's been a long time coming but I'm so very happy to have it. Just in time for the cooler weather and my increased mileage. Those jets feel magnificent on my legs and feet 🛀
Saturday - Easy 8 mi - I could tell my calves were a bit tight before this run so I decided to incorporate a new move into my dynamic warm up and I think it must have worked because my foot was not noticable at all until the halfway point. I read once that arch pain can be a result of tight calves. For sure keeping that in the warm up regardless. It certainly won't hurt.
Sunday - Easy 8 mi - the local marathon was this morning so I thought it'd be fun to run near the route. This worked out okay but I totally forgot about the half marathon and how crowded that would be. I also forgot about the wheeled athletes and how fast they would be on the course. All in all, I had to cross the runners three times and I managed but maybe wasn't my wisest decision. It was a lot of fun to see all the runners though. 🙃
After the run, I decided it'd be a good idea to ride my bike to the finish line to see the elite marathon finishers. I enjoyed being in the finish line atmosphere and imagine my surprise when I realized Creigh and Carissa were the announcers 😲.

Looking forward to seeing them in 3 weeks! Moreso because I'll be in WDW and less so because of them 😆

All in all, a really great week. I know they all won't be this good so relishing it while I can.

Happy running!

P.S. I'm still not considering a triathlon @lookingforsunshine The bike ride to the finish was fine but that bike ride home after standing around for 45 min was tough on my quads 🤣

So... Remember how much I hate 5Ks? Apparently I forgot earlier today and signed up for another one. It's not until April which gives me plenty of time to forget how bad it will suck at least 🙈

Why did I do this? For a shiny medal of course.

I'm already planning to run the corresponding mile road race as my "A" race for the spring. If I also run a race the weekend before, I get a bonus challenge medal! The weekend choices were 5K, 10K, or half marathon so even though 90% of the race will suck, I'll recover much faster. I debated picking the 10K and taking it easy but I know I'd have a hard time not trying to break that stubborn 50 min barrier. 👎

WDW Marathon Training - Week 4/15
giphy.gif

This week was exhausting. My body started doing this neat thing where it wakes up at 3am and will not go back to sleep 🙄. I am someone who requires my sleep to function. In fact, I don't think that I've ever actually stayed up ALL night because this was true even when I was younger and dumber.

It's Monday now and, other than Hattie barking at some ghosts at 1:30a, my sleep was much better so hopefully my body has figured it out. If not, this is going to be a grueling training cycle 😬

Scheduled
Monday - Easy 4 mi
Tuesday - Speed 8x600m
Wednesday - off
Thursday - Easy 6 mi
Friday - Easy 4 mi
Saturday - 7.5K Race
Sunday - Easy 8/10 mi

Completed
Monday - Easy 4 mi - it was another chilly day. I had to find my winter coat for the morning dog walk but it warmed up to 40 for my run. Perfect running weather!
Tuesday - Speed 8x600m - I had to be at work at 8a and since the sun doesn't get up until 7:30, I waited to do this run until after work. I always feel tired after work so it was a bit of a struggle to get motivated but the run went really well. My goal was 2:51 and my times were 2:52, 2:49, 2:46, 2:48, 2:47, 2:51, 2:48. So still a smidge fast but I was able to keep it together. My legs were a bit sore after this one so instead of my typical strength moves,I found a new core workout. It was just the right amount of challenging so I'm planning to try to incorporate it more often.
Wednesday - off Easy 6 - I moved this run up a day because I was wfh and would be going back into the office on Thursday. Run was good and legs felt fine.
Thursday - Easy 6 mi Rest
Friday - Easy 4 mi - the only thing I remember about this run is that some guy mumbled about how slow I was as I passed him. Rude. But also, that's the point of the easy days so I guess it was a success.
Saturday - 7.5K Race - Surprise! Another race! This was hosted by my company and part of it was a celebration of our 75th anniversary, hence 7.5K. Registration was only like $25 and they promised a special commemorative item for the 75th so I couldn't pass it up. I did debate taking this at M tempo pace since 7.5K is pretty close to the 5 tempo miles in the plan, but I'm bad at not racing and decided that I had already modified the schedule to accommodate the race so I should race it.
There were maybe 50 of us so a very small field. I lined up in the front third with no goals other than to just see what happened. I'd never ran a 7.5K so it was going to be a PR regardless. Plus, the course was hilly. 180 ft of ascent compared to the 60 I had run the day before. In my head, a 7:50 pace seemed like a good place to start, 5 seconds slower than my recent 10K. Well, that might have worked on a flatter course but because the first mile was mostly uphill and the second down, my splits were all over the place 7:57 & 7:19 🤣. Around this time I realized that I could only see 3 women in front of me. I wasn't sure if there were more further ahead or not but it seemed likely that I could place. I passed one of them pretty quickly and then she put on a surge and went past. We were only halfway into the race so I just kept at my pace thinking how it was way too early to be in top gear. I ended up catching her again and then I noticed that the front female turned off for the 5K. Totally forgot that was even an option so now I was in second place as far as I could tell. I wasn't totally convinced there wasn't someone else mush further ahead but I had no way to find out.
Third mile was 7:44 and I was feeling really good about where I was. I passed the other female I could see and was greeted with a nice downhill. Sadly it was an uneven path and covered in leaves so I couldn't take it as fast as I would have liked. It wasn't until the 4th mile was completed (8:00) that I realized there was no one particularly close behind me. I wish I hadn't looked because it zapped a lot motivation from me. I didn't have anyone in front to catch and there was no one behind me so I just settled in for the last half mile uphill. It was still difficult with the hills and all, but I didn't feel totally spent at the finish. I was incredibly thirsty and a bit annoyed that the water was not right at the finish so I had to walk around awhile to find it. Once I found the water, I walked back over to the finish to cheer on the other runners and check my time. I didn't take a photo so I don't have the official time but Garmin says 35:28 and I'm guessing it's pretty close. The most exciting part was that there weren't any super speedy females that I couldn't see, so I had in fact won! 🥳 There weren't any prizes other than a giant medal and my ego boost 🤣 but that's enough for me.
The race itself was kind of disorganized. It was difficult to find the packet pickup and it started a few minutes early which I'm guessing they didn't think was a big deal but I barely made it back from my warm up 😬. It's also a lot hillier than where I normally run and not particularly well marked. Regardless, it was still a fun way to spend my Saturday and I'm sure I'll sign up again in the future.
Sunday - Easy 8/10 mi - Officially the plan called for 10 miles at long run pace. However, with the modifications for the race, it was suggested to do an easy 8 instead. I thought I might still go for 10 if I felt up for it. When I woke up that morning, my body battery was only 25 so the lack of sleep was definitely catching up to me. The weather was going to get warmer and windier as the day progressed but I knew I couldn't make it 10 miles in my current state. I decided I would wait and go after my afternoon nap. It was in fact warmer (near 80) and windier (30mph with 40 mph gusts). I forgot to update my workout to easy paces so it kept yelling at me that I was going too slow but I had no interest in going faster. The first half of the run went well but something happened at mile 5 and I felt like all my energy was gone. I know is good to run on tired legs but this wasn't that at all. My legs were fine. I debated walking back several times but I knew that would take even longer so I stuck it out and managed the full 8. This wasn't the most glamorous of runs but it is the run I'm most proud of for the week. It really took a lot of self motivation to get out there and to keep going.

Happy running y'all!

Wait…he complained about you being slow…as you were passing him? I think he’s a little confused 😄😄

Exactly!
lol what the heck.

I will fight him for you.
Seriously. I don't know why it bothered me so much. Actually, it was probably because he felt the need to comment at all. As if my run was for anyone except myself. I'm running for me, dude! It doesn't matter if you think I'm slow.

It says a lot more about him than you. Also you are not even slow lol. I hate to think what he would say to me!

Sheesh. And your easy pace must be so much faster than mine, you're really fast. My eyes cannot roll into the back of my head far enough.

Let the record stand that I had an average pace of 10:35 for that run. Obviously not anywhere near Kipchoge's marathon pace of 4:37, but I would guess that lots of recreational runners have a pace similar to that on their daily runs.
