Run Over BY ECV

ok, i agree with you on the first point, but not on the second.
I agree that if the person can walk, it would be easier to have a CM maneuver it through the tight areas, or even have a CM "drive" while the person is still sitting. however, you cannot require it for everyone, but if you suggest it, most people will do it.
I have to disagree with this comment. Some CMs can't drive any better than the people renting them. I can manuever my PWC better than most CMs. If there is no ramp I won't use the boat. It's my safety I am worried about. I have no desire to end up in the water. Better to take the bus or drive myself.

Hey Robo, are there any other interesting threads you're NOT posting in?

Never mind Robo, I just saw the "What Is This Building" thread. You can make even the most innocent of threads more interesting. It's like a gift!

Ok, I realize now that i worded that badly. I think that the CM should know how to maneuver it, should the person need assistance. i can drive my chair just fine, so i dont want anyone to move me around. however, i stink at driving ECVs, so i would be glad to know that the CM can help me get in place if need be. i dont think it should be required, though, as many people can get around fine without help.

True, but there is much more walking in disney than in daily life. this is one reason why you see many more scooters there than at the mall, for example...

I am not quite sure why you quoted me, i dont dispute this at all.

Actually, not a stretch. It's a fact of the past (and in some places present) that children with disabilities would be sterilized so they couldn't have children or killed in infancy.

Or how about just the fact that society locked them away so they couldn't be seen or heard from.

This was occuring during the 1980's- not all that long ago.

If you don't believe me look up the book "I Raise My Eyes to Say Yes" by Ruth Sienkiewicz-Mercer (amazing story) or google the Disability Rights Movement.

It is very much a stretch. Comparing the murder of thousands in gas chambers to people not wanting ECV's used at Disney souveneir shop is not only a stretch bu absolutely ridiculous.

(not that I agree with banning ECV's anywhere, just pointing out the absurdity of the comparison)

No one is suggesting sterilization! :sad2:

tiffer - i was just saying the reason you see more scooters in disney than elsewhere is that there is so much walking in disney. i agree that most people with the scooters in disney would not qualify for a disabled parking permit. in my state, that means you cannot walk 200 ft without aid. i was just saying that you walk on average 5+ miles in disney a day, so they need a bit more help there.

I agree.

I was only pointing out the difference between disabled and needs extra assistance, for purposes of a previous poster discussed it as if it were the same and it is really not comparable. Not becuase I want them banned or for a lack of understanding of need for some.

In my opinion...

I shall abstain, courteously!

Just returned from MGM where an ECV run over my foot at the Celebrity 5 & 10 store on Hollywood Blvd. While the woman in the ECV was very apologetic, nevertheless I am lucky she didn't break my foot, but still ended up with a nasty bruise.
My point here is that in stores where there is not much space to move around and the aisles are narrow ECV'S should not be allowed in. I realize that this would be an obvious invonveniece to those on an ECV, but the safety of the majority of people should take precedence over the needs of a limited few. If not it will only be a matter of time before someone does get a broken limb from one of these vehicles.

Ok I take great exception to you little comment. I agree that there are some people in EVC's that take advantage of it but to classify as it as the needs of a few limited people is very rude. I am one of those "limited" few that has to use one and I take the time to make sure that other people are not in danger. I think an apologize by you is in order.

Here is a post I found on the disABILITIES that may help able bodied guests to understand this issue from the WC/ ECV users point of view.

I have a trip planned for August. I have been only a partial participant in many family trips and adventures due to stamina and distance issues.
Like you I feared what "others would think", my own expectations and self image as well as my families.

after visiting these boards and pondering it How exactly is my using a wheelchair or scooter bothering or taking away from anyone else??? How am I taking advantage? I still pay the same to get in, I still wait in the same lines, still need to get to fireworks early to find a spot..
maybe I don't know about some hidden "perks" of having a chair or scooter but as I understand thus far the only effect I will have is taking up a bit more space in line.
But I won't need that space on the park bench for 5 hours now so you may have a shady place to sit!!
If you can not participate in your family vacation without a chair, scooter or GAC then GET ONE!
These things are designed not as "extras" but to allow EVERYONE to experience the magic of disney.
It provides equal access and opportunity.

Wee! I am so excited my kids are laughing at me!

Honestly, I think there should be some way to say that disney rented ECV's can not enter stores. If the person didn't need to ECV to get to the entrance to rent it - they can walk through the store!

this thread is loaded with judgments...my wife is recovering from a broken foot and i anticipate she'll need an ecv on our trip, she can walk into the park, albeit slowly, but the longer she's on it the more painful it becomes. for her and others who benifit from an ecv's use, an ecv enables the vacation to be fully enjoyable

and to the others who are glib and posting odds or telling the uninformed to "search, search, search" sorry for boring you, i thought the boards were for information

During my one (and hopefully only) stint on an ECV 2 summers ago, I was especially careful when entering any store.

Where the aisles were clearly wide enough, I was a little less neurotic when rounding corners and such but where they were narrower than the width of a phone booth, I simply didn't take any chances.

Fortunately, I was not totally incapacitated that week as I was able to maneuver short distances on cane power. I do agree that more and more people on ECV's seem to be somewhat oblivious to the masses which can certainly wreak havoc on the unaware and unsuspecting victims.

Dha, wouldn't be here if I was bored!
Your missing OUR point on how heated these debates get and how DIS has become too PC over the years and have closed threads down. I just got a warning for my signature GMAB!
Shocked you have been on for many years and have not picked up on our point. but with only 60+ posts I don't know how often you visit:confused3

Wait a minute, are you baiting Robo?

Let's try to stay on topic here please.

This thread has been fairly civil to date. Directly personal comments is a sure way to end this discussion. :confused3

Thanks,

Knox
