Roxymama's 5k to Marathon, Time to Collect Another Castle

Oooh!! Maybe they'll sponsor you! Free apples!

You'll be instagram famous! You can be the new spokesperson for AffyTapple.

Haha! Do they even have this brand outside of Chicago? I know them as a Chicago thing. Now I need to figure out how to get them to outfit me for my remaining fall races. Giant apple suit? Cool sporty singlet covered in nuts? I mean..the Hot Chocolate race lends itself especially well right?

Edited to add that in reality some poor intern probably is forced to check who has used #affytapple and finally I made their day that someone used it.

I have never heard of #affytapple until now so it may well be a Chicago thing, but all the more reason they should make you an Affytapple ambassador so they can expand their market!

Well we are in the 10 day zone before my race, so that means....10 DAY FORECAST TIME!

Likely this will change a thousand times, because it's Chicago. But here goes.

62 high/ 52 low
Mostly sunny
20% chance rain
SW winds 12 mph
71 % humidity

The temp seems good, but the humidity looks annoying. Although I'd take that over raining. So we shall see!

At my half today, the caramel apples they handed out were AffyTapple. I had never heard of them until it was brought up here, but couldn't help but think about your journal when I got it.

IT'S RACE WEEK!

My long run went well on the lake front this weekend. We were downtown to see the Cubbies win on Saturday night (yay for having a connected hubby.) It was really chilly out and I forgot to pack a shirt to run in (doh) but I had my run jacket. Which felt like an ok idea until mile 2 when I had the sweatiest forearms ever and couldn't get the sleeves pushed up very far. So now I'll concerned like...
@KellyKKRoberts

The run went fine. Hubby was by my side the whole time and the lake front path was jammed. Felt like the whole city was out this weekend. Or at least half the city that wasn't hungover from Cubs partying. But of course now I'm into the "making up injuries in my head, pre-race mode" So I wake up this morning and
97eaca6ca4712fd3a816736834312c57.jpg

yeah, that's about right for the Monday before a big race. Let's see if I can talk my brain out of being dumb.

I will say I have all the confidence in the world about finishing my 15k...it's the pace that I'm having mind games about. 11:00 miles? Sure, I could do that. 10:30 - yeah probably could do that. 10? Ummmm, sub-10...Naahhhh. So I need to fix my ummm's and naaahhhh's to "yeps." Gotta figure out the first couple mile strategy soon so I can just have a plan and stick to it. Otherwise I might end up being this guy...
3r3wvz1.jpg

I'm also almost 100% certain that even if everything falls perfectly and I end up being able to maintain a fast-for-me pace during this race, this will be my finish line photo.

Ok, so being silly set aside...RACE WEEK!

I have two easy runs in the plans for Tues and Thur of this week. Possible I could do at least one outside and one on the treadmill since they are relatively short. I have a 4 mile and a 3 mile. Then 9.3!!!! on Sunday.

Weather is looking like pretty much the same still. 56ish highs with humidity, but partly cloudy, and winds aren't too bad.
So maybe capris and short sleeves and a throwaway sweatshirt in the corral. Luckily I'm in B so I'll only have to wait about 4 minutes tops once the race gets going (perks of busting my behind at the 5k earlier this fall.) I just can't see me wanting long sleeves on a 9.3 mile run where it will be almost 60 by the time I'm coming down the stretch along the lake where it will be least shady.
FYI: Sun will be in my face for first 5 miles and sun at side of my face for .5ish then at my back for end.

So my goals in order of easiest to hardest....
1) Finishing it is the ultimate super most important. Gonna get me a PR that way :)
2) I'd like to not have any miles over 11:00...I feel like that will be a big win for me in a race this long. I really want a time sub 2 hours no matter what happens I will try to fight for that.
3) @DopeyBadger did some math for me earlier in this thread about what it would take to get to into corral A potentially for Tink, so a 1:34:31 15k should eek me in. That's seems like something to shoot for if it's going well.
4) Anything sub-that time above...it's what my training plan has set me up for...but this whole racing past 6.2 is still an unknown quantity for me. It doesn't mean I won't try. This is being treated as an A race by me for sure. I just know that I can't put this as my ONLY goal because that sets me up for feeling bad if I don't make it. But why not be positive and try right?

So I may need help figuring out the game plan. I've become very disciplined at not being a watch starer. And I "think" I've gotten good at judging my effort. I'm confident and scared out of my mind at the same time? FUN!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

We'll come up with a strategy later in the week. Needless to say a conservative start, then a slow build to race pace, then hold onto a sprint to the finish! You've got this!

So 8 miles at 11:01, 1 mile at 9:42 and .3 miles at 6:15...? (I'm kidding! I'm kidding!)

You will do great!!! Your going to crush it!

Thank you! I hope you are right!

Beeker AND Leslie Knope?! I love you.

Also, you're gonna kill it in your race. ::yes::

^^you

Beeker seems unsure...haha

I think once runner tracking goes live (probably Friday or Sat) that I will post that for you guys. It's scary to know that you all could see me real time failing, but I think the benefit of knowing someone might be checking in will keep me from doing any kind of uneccesary "giving up" stuff. In other words, I can tap into the "gotta keep digging deep for my peeps" mind slogan. I'll give you Mr. R's tracking too if you can mentally send good vibes his way too. He isn't going for quite as aggressive of a race strategy as me which means he'll probably be 50 times less sore come Monday :) PS (in his attempt to get to 20 races this year he achieved a 10k PR attempt this week 1:09:31! and now he has 4 races to go.)

I've heard of Affy Tapple. But I'm in Milwaukee, so if it's a Chicago thing, maybe it's just because we're close enough. They have them at our local grocery stores every year.

And good luck in the Hot Chocolate race this weekend!! I've still got my eyes on doing one of those sometime. This year was out for Chicago once I signed up for Wine and Dine since I wasn't going to do it the weekend before.

I can't wait to see how you like Wine n Dine. I know a lot will be new this year so I'm dying to read all the recaps. Tons of luck to you!!!!

And you've reminded me that I haven't eaten a taffy apple yet today so I need to go rectify that!

Checking in here that I did my easy run last night on the treadmill and I HATE it. It was fine, easy, but I was so tired from the day (I got started at just after 9pm) that I was being a bit moody about the whole thing. Looking back at my typical attitude towards pre-race runs...this is typical. I think I must like to bundle all my negative energy up and get rid of it or something. Hoping my debbie-downer attitude flies away after this work week and I can be a beacon of positive light come race day. Male readers can skip to next paragraph about weather! :) It will help that my current PMSing and cramps will be long gone (TMI?) but let's be real ladies...timing of monthly "life-events" really can make a huge difference in physical ability and personality...at least for me. I hate when that time falls on a race and am over the moon that I will be done with that just before my race!

WEATHER!
The rain that was forecasted seems to have shifted to today and next couple days. So the weekend forecast is looking dry, hurray!
Sunday
58 high, 52 low
sun and area of low clouds (whatever that means)
Still 19% precip

I think I'm still thinking short sleeves and capris. I think?

Have I mentioned yet here that I feel like barfing every time I think about trying to race this race? I know I am capable, but I also know I have to do it to prove it (I stole that line of thinking from someone :)
Ugh, I'm a nervous wreck about it. that'll change once I'm in the trenches, but I'll be stressing for bit.

Don't stress. Whatever happens, happens right? You've done the prerequisite training. You're going to do great if you allow yourself to just do what your body will let you on that particular day. Just do your best and whatever your best equals is what it equals.

I'd suggest wearing the least amount of clothes you feel comfortable in. Being cold is much easier to deal with than being hot during a long distance run. I find after 2-3 miles that all the chills are gone.

Almost race day!!!!

Thanks, you are totally right! There's days my body let's me do things I didn't think possible and other days where it just wants to do less. But I'm going to try to do the best I can. There's definitely been races I just try to maintain a pace I know I can hit the whole time (my July 10k) and I've got more in the tank when I cross the finish. So I'll just try to give what I have instead of treating it like a long run. Who knows what that will equal? Ok, see, I'm already feeling better about this.

And I'm thinking the same thing on the clothes choice. Last year it was much colder out (39ish?) because it was in November. I ran the 5k and I was freezing in the corral, so I had on a long jacket, long pants, gloves, head wrap. And I got so hot during my 5k. It was too much and that was only 3.1 and not even that sunny out. I think this may be the right race to actually do gear check and check a hoodie for after the race is over. Now my big decision is hat or no hat...in case of sun or possible light rain. I have a very light weight hat that I have worn in many races, so I know it's not too hot or annoying. I think I may go hat. There could be long stretches with no shade for this one.

Man, this is me before every race (sometimes even the period too which sucks haha!). You are going to do great, and you are going to FEEL SO GOOD that you finished this race!!!!!

Thanks! I am so excited for it and really hope I get the true experience this year and not a shortened course. I'd like to write up a recap afterwards, but I don't know if anyone would read it.
