On Mother's Day my family had dinner at R&C. Although this is a longtime family favorite it probably wouldn't have been my first choice but four of us just landed around 3:30. With a problem with our BCV room assignment, it's good we didn't plan something further afield.

We arrived a few minutes early for our 7:20 reservation and asked for outside. We received a pager and waited just a few minutes for it to go off. We could have waited another 40 minutes for an outside table but everyone was tired so we took the inside one that was available. It was up against one of the windows and we had a wonderful view of the globe during Illuminations. It actually was great to just focus on that for a change.

The bad news was that the end seats on the table are extremely uncomfortable. There is about 3-4 inches of space for your legs. I have to think that my children have had those seats at times over the years and just never complained. It was really the pits. My DIL and I had them this time and ate our dinners sitting "sidesaddle."

The good news was that our server was Kyle and he did a fine job. The servers in R&C have been nearly uniformly delightful over the years and he was no exception.

For appetizers, four of us chose the fruit & cheese plate. This has been a mainstay on the R&C menu since Epcot opened but the latest reincarnation of it is our least favorite by far. No more strawberries, no more Stilton cheese although there was a little bit wrapped in phyllo dough (or something like that), no more 5 English cheeses. Instead the cheeses were forgettable....which I've done. I'm almost positive one was Brie....not exactly English! It also seems to have become ubiquitous as it was on every cheese sampler we had this trip. There was a little bit of jelly which I would have normally left untouched but needed something to liven the taste.

Our son had the potato leek soup which he enjoyed very much. Our DIL had a salad with Stilton dressing. It looked good.

She chose the Vegetable potpie for dinner which she said was very good. DS1 had the 6 hour shank which he said was good. DS2 and I had Fish & Chips with mashed potatoes instead of chips. For some years now, R&C's fish often seemed soggy but tasty (not true in the early years when it was just great). THis time it was crisp on the outside but seemd not quite done on the inside. Not the type of fish that is best served that way.

My husband and our DD had fillets. She didn't say anything and having just returned from college any steak probably tasted great. But my DH said his was tough.

For dessert, DS1 had a fruit scone which he enjoyed. Two had the Aplle Crumble which was good and one had just plain vanilla ice cream. DIL and I had the Guiness Torte. I couldn't taste the Guiness at all but it was good.

Two in our family still miss the prime rib and Yorkshire pudding which certainly seems more typical of Britain than steak. With the changes in the fruit and cheese plate, it will probably be a while before we give R&C another try. But they hardly need our business as it is always bustling.

Hi there, Barb! I always enjoy your honest opinions. You seem to make it to the world quite often so you have a lot of experience under your Disney dining belt! Have you had the cheese plate at Cali Grill? I saw pictures from someone's trip report this week where the cheese plate with pairings of various items (nuts, etc.) looked phenomenal! I have had fish & chips served just the way you described from another restaurant and it was sent straight back to the kitchen. Yuck! From the sounds of it, R&C may have fallen victim to the DDP quality decline. Do you think?

Hi Belle5, :wave2: Do you have a trip planned soon? I bet with your sons growing up it is harder to coordinate breaks.:sad2:

I don't know that any of the changes are due to the DDP. I don't subscribe to the theory that all changes are a result of it. For instance, the fruit plate change is recent and the DDP has been running for almost 2.5 years. I wouldn't think steak is that much cheaper than prime rib but I can imagine there is less waste.

And of course, the poorly cooked fish has nothing to do with the DDP. Yes, I should have sent it back but we were having so much fun catching up and I had plenty of food anyway! Hopefully, my experience was a fluke.

Yes, we have a trip planned for Christmas. We are booked at Saratoga. We were able to snag that 40% off deal that was going on a while back. Will we actually go or will we cancel? That is another question. The older guys really want to branch out and see more of the good ol' USA. One of them in particular is really tired of WDW. We went to Philly and DC for spring break this year and they really enjoyed it much more than if we had gone back to WDW. They just really like change. Sigh...:sad2: Schedules are getting tough--no way around that.

How about you? I know you always have a trip in the works!!

Yes, we have a trip planned for October but without our DD who will be back at school. We also have the BCV portion of a stay reserved for January but may switch it to Dec as her school's schedule is a bit different this year. We may also just cancel and go to another favorite family spot but have to get that worked out soon!

Good for your family to see differerent parts of the USA. The years with our kids just go too fast and it is hard to squeeze everything in.:sad2:

Thanks for the info! I loved their fish and chips last time we were there and was excited about eating there again. I may have to rethink our ADR.....

steen, if you loved it last time I sure wouldn't change your plans. Hopefully, my fish was the exception. If it is happening on a regular basis, the problem will be corrected I would think. As Belle gently implied....I should have sent it back!!!

Let us know about your experience, please.

I ate dinner at the Rose & Crown May 12th and was also disappointed. I too had the cheese plate and was disappointed they didn't have either the green or the striped cheese (forgot their names). I had the new pork dish with barley and mushrooms and was not impressed (very, very, dry). I also had their new berry scone for dessert. The scone was very dry, but the berries and cream that came with it were delicious. Rose & Crown has always been one of my favorite restaurants, but they disappointed this time. Service though was wonderful as always.

Thanks for the review. We always eat at R&C when we visit WDW. After all the trips we have taken we have only had 1 bad meal at R&C. I had the steak several years ago and it was really tough. Ihad to send it back because it was so tough.

Thank you for the review. We have ADR's at R&C for our trip. I am getting a bit concerned about eating here but will keep the ADR. It will be a new experience for us.

Thanks for your review. It's not somewhere we've ever chosen to eat in the past, being from the UK ourselves, but it doesn't sound as though the food on offer is particularly representative of the UK anyway :confused3

Oh, I would certainly keep it if I were you. My review must have sounded more negative than I meant it to be. We have loved R&C over the years. The young CMs are always a delight. I've always thought that whoever selects the CPers from England does an outstanding job. Kyle was great.

I do think the fruit and cheese plate is a real letdown compared to the past. My fish was hopefully a rare mistake. Almost everyone else in our family seemed to love their dinner.

Ron, was your replacement steak tender?

wilma-bride, the food does seem less representative to me lately too which is a shame. But then I've only had one trip to the UK. What would you consider to be standards at a typical restaurant in the UK?

A typical restaurant in the UK (thinking casual dining) would feature things like steak pie, steak and chips, fish and chips, roast dinner, burger, pasta dishes. And UK puddings are things like spotted dick, jam roly poly, treacle sponge and apple crumble - yum, I've made myself hungry now :rotfl:

'spotted dick, jam rolly poly, treacle sponge'?:confused3 OK, please speak Americanized English. What the heck are these and how do you make them. I'm always up for something new.

what time would you guys suggest we get reservations at rose and crown to be able to enjoy the Illuminations as we finish dinner? We will be there middle of January

We were at R&C for dinner on May 12th too. It's a tradition to eat & watch the Illuminations. Also had the cheese plate - terrible; the Tea Time chicken - dry. When we went outside to watch the Illuminations they forgot to cover our dinners; our group wasn't particularly disappointed because no one really liked what they were eating. Had the berry scone for dessert and i agree, scone was dry. Doubt we'll be eating there any time soon - I really miss the cottage pie!!

We find 7:30 to be a perfect time for R&C if you want to still be there for Illuminations. If not available, I'd aim for a bit earlier. Illuminations is always at nine except during the Candlelight Processional nights in Nov/Dec when it takes place at 9:30. NYE has a showing at midnight.

In recent years the cheeses had been Stilton which is a wonderful blue cheese and five Counties or something like that (that was the striped one). At any rate, English cheeses all and each was good. Brie...I mean seriously!:confused3

We have 6:00 pm ressies on July 26th. Has anyone had the chicken? I am not a very adventurous eater and some of the menu items sound like too much sauce or too much beef for me. So am I curious about the chicken. and the roasted pork loin. And how come the kids menu has cottage pie but the regular menu does not?

I've said this on countless other threads! Shame if the quality slips too, then our fantastic reputation for (British) food goes even further down the toilet!! The previous sentence was served with a large portion of sarcasm on the side by the way!
