I am not sure yet this is what I have, but it seems to be...seeing my dr. on the 13th. After reading that it is a progressive condition and can thiicken your skin and cause a bulbous nose (W.C. Fields had rosacea) I'm freaking out a bit. Can anyone share their experiences with it? Thanks.

I have it and I have to apply a cream to my face everyday. I'm also supposed to avoid things like red wine and balsamic vinegar, and stay out of the sun. I used to get embarassed because my face would turn red all the time, but it's much better now.

I apply cream and have special antibiotics that i take. I have had it for years now and it took me awhile to go to the dermatologist. I didn't realize that the red nose was actually rosecea. All I have is pinkish cheeks and my nose always looks sunburned. Not everyone has the same symptoms with Rosacea. (like not everyone gets the bulbous nose). Don't worry about it. The medicines seem to do a good job. The cream they prescribed was Metrocream and currently Minocyclene is the name of the pill I take. Although my HMO is not covering that pill any longer so I have to change.

Good Luck!

I have a very mild case of it and don't use anything. I've tried the antibiotics for it, but they made my skin so "photosenstive" that I was flushing and breaking out while commuting home from work!!

I use a sunscreen makeup everday and have found that mineral makeup (Bare Escentuals, Sheer Cover, etc) do an EXCELLENT job of getting the red out of my skin.

Oh, and going to the beach is totally out of the question for me anymore!

Talk to your doctor about what products to use on your skin too. I think things that have alpha hydroxy or one of those can be too harsh on your skin.

Some foods are triggers.....wine, alcohol, spicy foods, citrus, tomatoes.....you just have to learn what your skin reacts too. Mine is definitely alcohol and if I have too much caffeine!

Right now I am not using any meds as I am pregnant, but have used metrogel with success.....also gentle cleansers like Cetaphil are good....and sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen.

I use metrogel, and my mom takes tetracycline. I find that the tetracycline works better for me, but it interfers with birth control pills, so I cannot take it.
I am very hit or miss about using my metrogel, but I have found that Philosophy's "Purity" cleanser works wonders. It is very gentle. Also, alcohol and caffeine can cause the redness. Our doctor told us that rosacea keeps the blood cells in your nose and cheeks from closing all the way, resulting in the reddish nose and flushed cheeks. Alcohol and caffeine can stimulate the blood cells, so if you try to limit your intake, it can help a little bit.

I use the metro-gel and also am on minocycline. My dermo added a special face wash for me to use once a day the last time I saw him. He said if it helped, I could probably drop the minocycline the next time I see him. It really has helped - I have had redness on my cheeks for years. Now I'm only rosy if I have a little alcohol. No bumps, thickening or swelling here. I think it is one of those things that responds very well to treatment, so even if you are never really "cured", it can be very controlled.

dh has it, and he uses metrocream with much sucess when he has a "flare up" he gets the red forehead, and nose. nothing on his cheeks, and only has to use the cream when he flares up. he does get a few pimples on his forehead, but one night of cream and it is almost gone. (after two days of treatment he is fine)
we have only been able to find 2 triggers, and neither are food related. one is if he is doing any remodeling and cutting cedar wood (so odd we know) and the other is if he has been wearing a hat (winter) for long periods of time, for more then a day. ( i am talking for 8 hrs more then 2 days)
so it is a mild case, but they say with age it can get worse. his father has the red nose part, and cheek part, but won't admit he has it. :headache:

I've been wondering if I have roseacea, too. I have very fair skin and red hair and have a German/British ancestry, which I understand puts me in a likely group for roseacea, but my redness is primarily on my chin, not my nose and cheeks. Does that ever happen with roseacea?

I THINK it's possible. Definitely ask your dr.

Thanks all! I'll let you know what dr. says.My skin also feels "tingly" often, esp when I get all pink.

I have it but you wouldn't know it. I took antibiotics for 6 months now I don't need them. I do use the cream every day as maintenance. My Dr. said there is no cure you just treat the flare ups. Don't worry - get treated and it will clear up. It was one of the best things I've ever done. It's wonderful to go out w/o make up now- if I want.

Do any of you also have an autoimmune disease or some sort of inflammatory disorder?

Not that I've discovered yet, but it wouldn't surprise me.

What are your favorite facial cleansers? I need to find a new one. My favorite one is $33, so I am trying to find one a lot cheaper. I am currently using the Eucerin for rosacea, but I had to order that online because I haven't found it in any local store. Anything I can just buy at Target?

When my weight was at my heaviest, I developed rosacia. As soon as I took off 80 lbs., the condition completely disappeared. I haven't had it since. Go figure.

Do you have a CVS near you? They sell the Eucerin.

Aveeno makes an "Ultra Calming" line (cleanser, night cream, daily moisturizer with sunscreen) that you can get at Target or WalMart.
