Room Conditions

Hello All,

We are currently staying at SSR and have noticed that the cleaniness in this DVC resort may be a bit lacking. We are currently contemplating purchasing (at another DVC through resale), but this issue makes me wonder...Have others experienced issues with bathroom mildew, dust, etc? Does the DVC do a good job of maintaining the rooms and furnishings? I do know that several have mentioned the shabbiness of the BCV and I'm concerned that this could be a problem in future years at any of the DVC.

Thanks

I have always felt that DVC resorts have been well maintained in general. That being said, I do think ALL housekeeping has declined a bit in the past couple of years. This isn't just at Disney, but hostelries in general. As for the "mildew"...Florida is known for its problem with mold in this hot humid time of year. It really is a BIG problem for everyone down there, so the best you can do is inform them when you see a problem so they can fix it. Other than that, get yourself some bleach and take care of it yourself. We have always found maintenance happy to come up and fix a problem when we call them about it.

Couple things to consider.

1). Anywhere in the south you are going to have issues related to humidity (mildew) & bugs/critters. This is unavoidable, IMO.

2). Anyone can get a less than perfect room anywhere. I think we hold WDW & DVC to a higher standard (& rightly so IMO) so we are more tuned in to the imperfections.

The key is how those concerns are dealt with once brought to the attention of management or other appropriate party.

While we have never had issues with room conditions at any DVC property, I know from reading these boards that others have. All I can say is judge for yourself.

We just returned from a 4 night stay at BWV, studio room 3050. The room was very clean. I am no clean freak, but based on recent less-than-clean room reports on this board, I had my eye out for mold/mildew, snack remnants, etc. No sign of any of that. All mechanical elements were in good repair - all the lights worked, doors were properly affixed to their hinges, TV remote worked, etc.

We had a nice view of the Luna Park pool, and only one night did I hear late-night pool users, but it didn't last long.

And the room was ready at 8:15am on a Sunday morning to boot! We were checked in and on our way to Animal Kingdom by 8:40am.

Our room at OKW in June was really spotless and well maintained. My folks live in FL and they can attest to the mold issues. It's really hard to keep up with it even if you are cleaning well once a week. Having said that, if I noticed it, I would stop by the front desk on the way to the parks and mention it. That way they could send someone in to deal with it while I was riding rides!

We just returned from BWV where we stayed in a 1 BR (mittelst, I think we heard those same LOUD pool folks from our unit!).

While the kids loved the brand new sofabed, and the unit (3026) was in relatively good repair, I will say that our shower ceiling was a disaster-the paint was peeling in large chunks. It literally came off on us when we showered. I'm not sure if there had been a leak in the unit above us or whether it was a humidity issue, but it was something that should be addressed soon-as it takes away from the beauty of the units, and could pose a problem. We did report our concerns to the front desk on our first day, and was told that the painters would be onsite the next day and would take care of it, which didn't happen. I'm assuming nothing was done to fix it because we were still in the unit until yesterday, and perhaps they don't paint while the unit is occupied. I would have been happy if they had just scraped the ceiling so that no additional paint would fall on us while showering. I would hope it wasn't that they just ignored the issue.

HOWEVER, It in no way 'ruined' our vacation--that is for certain! :goodvibes

What IS most important is that we had a GREAT time! The room location was fabulous-pool access was awesome--and the other 'shower stuff' was just 'details'. Like so many others, I am guessing that repairs can be a challenge because the rooms are always in use. I'll still take a "bad" falling shower ceiling day at WDW over a "good' day at home anytime.

BTW-The Summer Block Party was AWESOME!! :cheer2:

To answer your question, unfortunately yes we had lots of mildew at OKW and tons of dust on the ceiling fans, under beds and behind night stands (which are far from the wall so its very obvious when you drop something). I'm a neat freak I admit but a little dust in one thing, this was beyond acceptable. Disney is not keeping the same standards it once did for sure, but I still love it and notify mousekeeping so they stay on top of it. It did not spoil anything but I was a bit embarassed when my sister pointed it out too.

On our last trip to OKW in a 2BR villa I did not notice any cleanliness issues. The baths were mold-free and everything was in great shape. I am pretty picky! Maybe it helps to go in off-season when they have some vacant rooms and don't have to race to turn them around for the next guests? My parents were with us and they thought the place was amazing. If I ever do run across a villa with issues, I will be calling right when I arrive to either move rooms or have it fixed! I read reports here on the boards of people who find issues but never call... :confused3

True, everything is relative. One room in a resort may be very clean and well maintained, while the room next door may be a mess with over-use. Hard to make a generalization. I have not stayed at other resorts other than SSR, however our DVC friends who own at BCV, VWL, and BWV have all said that their respective resorts are for the most part well-maintained and have had very few problems with cleanliness over the years.

Our experience in the past at SSR was wonderful- everything seemed brand-new. However, that was almost a year ago so it may be different now. Good question.

While at BCV last week we had a great room with no dust or mildew. Only the rugs are getting old. I really thin you cannot go wrong buying there. The location is just too good.

We stayed at the Poly several years ago and had horrible mold covering the bathroom wall. We called repeatedly to get it clean, they never came and ended up giving us one free night instead. We never went back there, even though my son loved the volcano slide (but now loves StormAlong Bay more.) At the time we were paying $400 per night and I just could not justify continuing to pay that much with no service.

Now as a DVCer it is free (with the exception of the large down payment and the yearly maintenance fees of course). I would suggest getting enough pointrs for a week in a one bedroom. It really is great to have a kitchen.

Thanks to all who responded. The info you provided is very valuable and helps me to know that these types of issues are random and not indicative of a growing problem. Those that recommended that issues be dealt with immediately via the front desk make a great point. Like someone on the thread said, the issue isn't so much what was wrong, but how the resort responds.

We've stayed at VWL, BWV, and SSR. We've not had any cleanliness problems, but have had minor things like light bulbs out. We also did have a problem with air conditioning at SSR, which I've since read here is due to the system being set up on a sensor.....no movement within the room and the air conditioner doesn't stay on......hence.....dead air and a too warm room. We also had a problem with our entrance door at SSR (shortly after the Springs section opened actually) You know how hotel doors are supposed to automatically close behind you......well, ours didn't something was wrong with the closer and unless we pulled it closed it didn't close .......fortunately I noticed this shortly after checkin....we called to have it fixed, however, in the five days we were there it was not repaired even though we called several times. It wasn't a real problem for us since we realized it didn't close and made sure it was secure before we left, but, if the next guest didn't ......it did present a security/theft problem.

I would rather enjoy my vacations then checking corner to corner to see if my room is so clean. :confused3

Just report it to the front desk and have them clean the room.

I know its vacation time but my DW cleans the room, I MEAN CLEANS the room upon entering. She tells me to go to the pool and she comes and gets me when shes through, I know its extreme but thats her, she spends about 45 min to an hour and then shes ready to start her vacation.
