Robin Roberts Has Come Out

I like how she did this, a kind of "oh btw Im gay" most knew anyway, she confirmed but making it sound as if it is really unimportant in her job, which it is unimportant. She is not going to have being gay be the defining thing in her life

It wasn't that hard to figure out. Could tell those many years ago when she was on ESPN I think it was. Hardly a shock.

I agree I don't think she "shouted" either. She thanked her longtime girlfriend among others. Didn't say anything directly about being gay. She did it during a slow news time too, she has been away from GMA for the holidays, probably will not be back until after the first. By then it will be old news. Brian Boitano's statement was specific about being gay.

I think the reason Brian Boitano made an announcement about it when he did is because he was just named as a member of the US delegation to the Winter Olympics to Sochi. Russia has been in the news recently due to the treatment of homosexuals in the country. Making that announcement NOW, ahead of the Sochi games, is a statement.

Though, I was confused because I didn't realize he wasn't already "out".

I do hope for a day where being gay is not news worthy. Then I will know that all people are treated equally.

Never really gave it any thought. She's terrifically talented, and seems like a genuinely nice human being. Best of everything to her:thumbsup2

It is still important in 2013 that this is newsworthy? That "coming out" is an event? Seriously, I want to make sure I'm not being insensitive (as a white hetero male). Is this something still worth attention? Even though it sounds like she wasn't making a spectacle of it. It's like when Anderson Cooper finally "came out", mostly because people wouldn't stop freaking asking.

YES!

There are a lot of young people who are gay and afraid to "come out". Having people in high profile places being "out in the public" continues to break down the barriers and give inspiration to others to do the same in their own circle of life.

Think of kids in middle school and high who are gay. They must remain "in the closet" due to society pressure. Those barriers have just begun to scratch the surface.

Honesty who cares? Keep what you do in the bedroom to yourself.

By all means. I hope this means you NEVER acknowledge your opposite sex relationships....no hand holding, no wedding announcement, no saying "my husband (or wife, or boyfriend, or girlfriend)"....because all of these are obviously spreading around "what I do in the bedroom" (since obviously Robin Roberts saying "my girlfriend" is telling others what she does in the bedroom.

:confused3

I wish it wasn't. I really do.

And, someday, I hope my children live in a world where no one asks, no one cares, and it never makes the news. But, that (unfortunately) is not the world we live in today. As long as there are people and groups FIGHTING the extension of basic human and civil rights to gay people, it will be news when people come out.

It's still worthy of attention as long as you have people like Phil Robertson discussing their views. Young people NEED to see positive stories to counter balance the hatred that is out there.

Good for her if this makes her and her partner happy but who cares? Why do we still care who people love?

You know, I don't care who people love but I also don't understand why people need to announce who they love or somehow "come out".

25 -50 years ago it was an "issue". These days not so much. At least not in my opinion.

To most people, no, it isn't worth attention.

Though in this case, the media has blown it up.

I have to agree. If none of the media took her statement and ran with it I bet most people wouldn't have given it a second thought. The more people make a big deal of it the longer it will take to seem second nature.

I'm sure I didn't word that exactly right, but hopefully people will understand what I'm getting at.

In addition to what you said, it's also just another way of us (meaning teh gays) saying we're not going to be silent (in the closet) anymore. :goodvibes

Exactly this.

Protip: If you're straight, please refrain from wondering out loud why anyone "has to come out" or "why it's a big deal" - you don't get it and never will. This isn't an insult, just a fact.

Gay kids are still killing themselves. Gay adults are still being murdered. The world is not a utopia just because the general public doesn't pee their pants and clutch their pearls over gay celebrities anymore.

I would love it if we lived in a world where it genuinely didn't matter who you love and nobody would blink an eye when a man they don't know says "my husband" - but that isn't the world we're living in, even in the good old 'free country' US of A, and if you think it is, I think you've watched too much Modern Family and Glee.

Thank you! I hate when people use this argument or line when talking about gay people.
Why shouldn't they be able to converse about their partner the same way hetero people talk about theirs!
