ABC News corespondent and Good Morning America cohost Robin Roberts has publicly acknowledged her sexuality for the first time ever in an end-of-year Facebook post.

"At this moment I am at peace and filled with joy and gratitude," Roberts wrote on Facebook Sunday afternoon, explaining how grateful she is after her rough year.

But buried in the note for the eagle-eyed is the first time Roberts has ever publicly acknowledged her long-term relationship with Amber Laign. "I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together," Roberts said. TVNewser says the two have been together for ten years.

I still thinks it's sad she couldn't mention the girlfriend's support when she was thanking everyone else during her illness. Hopefully, her coming out now will inspire others to do the same.

Wow, I thought she was already openly gay. popcorn::

I bet that's a big exhale. So tiring.

I still love her.

You know I'm a huge GMA fan since you know me on FB though :)

I wonder if her an her gf talked about that and made a mutual decision to not say anything.

This is where the next generation has it much easier. Her exact age group, plus being black - well I can only imagine once you deny or tell so many lies/half truths that it only adds to the stress of actually *just being* - making that decision, so to speak. It's like there are a few that seemed to miss the boat/the changing tides and that must have been difficult.

Wow I had no idea. I always wondered why she was never married or had kids! I have always loved her, I'm glad she is able to live without the hardship of coming out now

I'd be more interested in what Sam Champion thought as he had to have known. Maybe he helped her with the decision.

I hope they are very happy!
RR rocks in my world. I think she is a truly warm, honest, amazing woman who deserves everything good in life:wizard:

Robin - Brian Boitano - I also thought they were openly gay. It's so sad to think these high profile people (or anyone) had to hide who they were born to be. Hopefully, one day things will change.

Good for her. She deserves every happiness after all that she has been through. I wish her well.

I never gave it a thought one way or another. It's just not an issue to me. :confused3

I'm only writing because you added this :confused3, phorsenuf. I *think* I understand how you're thinking/what you're saying.

But I know a lot of people who hid their homosexuality from teammates and loved ones. And it's in daily thoughts in speech/it is an issue. They watch/watched what they say (some finally stopped the watching), how they say it, pronouns every single day of that time period - EXHAUSTING. So to her it would have been an issue no matter what she says about it.

And thank God she didn't pass away. One, for the obvious reason - she's young and beloved. But especially because she wasn't out - how horrendous of a time that would have been for a partner of ten years - to add that with her normal mourning.

Me either. This would never have even crossed my mind. Same with Anderson Cooper. I wouldn't have given it a thought had it not been all over the news.

Anderson Cooper is *probably* a little different. One, he was fully out in his life according to him. It seems, and I'm not certain of course, that Robin was watching her words/ways re: talking about those who helped her through her illness etc.

And Anderson Cooper was very smart IMO. He travelled so extensively for his job, to so many countries with a history of abuse/death sentence for homosexuals that he probably simply weighed those facts with his personal choices. Robin doesn't seem to have that kind of career.

Good for her if this makes her and her partner happy but who cares? Why do we still care who people love?

Good for her...but I too thought she was "out" already. The one I was surprised about was Jenna Wolf on the Today Show (who is with fellow NBC News correspondent Stephanie Gosk, who just gave birth to their daughter).

The more prominent people who are able to be open about who they are, the easier it becomes for regular people to come out without stigma.

Jenna is the one that had the baby. Probably what you meant but it was a little confusing reading it.

someday this "news" will not BE news.....it will just Be people living their own lives,,,,

some day

I never knew Robin was in the closet. She was at a Gay Pride event in New Orleans several years ago. Her sister, Sally Ann, is a morning co anchor on the morning news.

My thoughts on this are that it is very close to being no longer necessary to do this, announce. It simply will not be necessary. Yeah for all of us!! :thumbsup2 Younger people will just be and it will no longer be needed to say a thing. They will have no backtracking, half truths, avoiding to deal with, because they will just be like any heterosexual person on here that talks about their loved ones/husbands/wives WHEN it's relative to a conversation. Happens every day on here for those who are not extremely private or secretive.

People will just be. Hallelujah.

But for people that have hidden it a la not mentioning the most important person when openly talking about/showing getting through the awful realities of cancer on multiple occasions (I'm just assuming here about omitting - I didn't read about her battle or see the updates etc), I guess announcing it is simply clearing the slate so to speak.

_____________________________________________

I wish I could think of a good example. But I can't. Okay, I'll do a backwards one. Meredith Viera does a lot of talking/writing/visually documenting about her husband's MS. About the impact on her/their lives/their family. A lot, because I assume she's an open type of personality - or it helps her to share AND she's educating by doing that.

That's her way, to reach out and share. So let's keep her personality but make her gay. So say her partner has MS. If she were gay and not out (simply being, I mean) she would have to work VERY HARD on a daily basis not to simply slip with certain issues and certainly not share that the person she loved and lived with had MS and the impact on her life. It would change who the core of her was to deal this way.

Rosie O'Donnell can go on and on about how she never was in the closet. But I watched her use the phrase "the other adult in my household" on more than one occasion on her old talk show.

That has to be tiring to think about which awkward phrase to use on any given day. ;)
