Admirable, but does one mission need to exclude the other? I don't think so.
It doesn't neet to exclude the other, but it does take priority.

wow...some of the responses on this thread are really sad![]()
I for one care for ALL of God's creatures...ESPECIALLY the ones who we have made dependent on us, the ones who have no choice in when/if they are born, who are dropped on the side of the road with no food, no warmth, and no voice to ask for help.
It's not about perspective...it's about having a heart.
I don't care one bit. They're animals. Animals which have been overbred by all the idiots who just have to have kittens and puppies and think its mean to spay and neuter. Who cares, they will have a full shelter in a month.
All I can say to those of you who think I am cruel because of what I posted is, "come to Mobile". You can't begin to fathom the lacksidasical attitude people have towards animals here. When I said we see a new dead dog almost daily, that wasn't hyperbole. Dogs get hit on my street at least twice a week, and in the three mile trip to the highway everymorning, we do see a new dead animal (dog or cat, I don't count the armadillos).
The line I told you that my idiot friend gave me about his dog feeling "like less of a man" perfectly illustrates the attitude of this area of the country. People don't give a damn about thier animals and let them run wild throughout the neighborhood. It's frustrating and infuriating, but I would rather see these animals rounded up and humanly euthanized over the alternative.
The problem lies in the fact that there are no animal control officers to do that. I called the county shelter one morning when I got to work because there was a pack of about 25 dogs walking up the ramp onto I-10. I was told to "call the po-lease if they get on the highway".
We've had two stray cats basically die on our front patio, both had been mauled by something (one died, the other my wife took to our vet, who had to euthanize him because he had feline AIDS). These animals attack eachother, the carry disease, they breed constantly and have litter after litter. Who is going to pay for their care? Yes, a few of you volunteer in your local shelters and give to the ASPCA, but honestly, you are in the minority. There are more stray animals than people in this country, and they simply can't all be taken in. And it's expensive. . .we've got three dogs and two cats, and it's not cheap. We're at the limit of what we can do. Someone else needs to pick up the ball and run, but they don't.
I know they weren't asked to be born, but they were. I'm sure all the little crack babies my mother and sister care for in the NICU weren't asked to be born that way either. But we've got to draw a line somewhere. I posit that most of you would be absolutely horrified at what you see down here. It's disgusting, it really is, but the culture down here doesn't even value education of it's people, why would they give a rat's rear about a dog.
Is what that shelter is doing right? I don't know, I don't work there, I'm not the manager. My gut tells me that there is something fishy going on. But the fact of the matter is, they are taking one solution, and like everything else in this country today, we don't attack problems, we just wait for something to happen, and then we try to find solutions. And I've now gone full circle to reactionary.
mattsdragon - I have seen the attitude you are describing. In rural counties across the country this is the way people think. Does that justify the behavior?
You're right, crack babies don't ask to be born. But there are many people who will care for them in one way or another. They will not be killed because someone wanted a day off (and no, I'm not comparing a human life to an animal).
The reason there are no shelters to care for these animals are precisely BECAUSE of those attitudes (and others expressed here).
"I don't care."
When everyone stops caring, there are no other options...there is no funding for shelters, there is no funding for health and human services. Why should a community fund anything for a bunch of people who don't care? If we don't demand these services from our elected officials, then they think we don't care.
And judging by the responses here, I know why.
You have made your choice, and you are welcome to it. Many here have also made a choice to be the voice of these poor animals...we should be welcome to it as well and not be "admonished" for caring. Or told we should care more about something else. How condescending.
Sounds like an alarmist urban legend to me.![]()
And I have yet to see concrete evidence on this thread of this actually meaning all the animals will be put down today.
Just because you post something in a big, red font doesn't mean it's true.![]()

I don't in the least mean to be condescending to people who care about unwanted animals and actually DO something about it. My comments were directed at the people on this thread - and others like them in the general community - who will cry foul when they read a news story but otherwise do nothing to solve the problem.
And, as I said, I am content with the current solution - for the most part, because, like a previous poster, I don't think every stray animal that comes in to a shelter is adoptable by any stretch of the imagination.
The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated:

Some of the comments on this thread are truly eye-opening to the posters we have amongst us, urban legend, or not.
Merry Christmas, everyone.![]()
I hope it is "an urban legend", however, it is alarming that their petfinder site (see op) is listing all animals that are not courtesy listings or in foster care as not being available after today. ("LAST DAY 12/22/08")
A pp poster has said they called and "J" at the shelter confirmed that if the animal's listing states that today is their last day...it is their "last day". As stated by someone else, I find it hard to believe that ALL of the animal's times are up on the same day?
Another poster asked about fosters in this area~I am not in the area, however, I have alerted the transport group that I work with, who has contacts to many rescues/possible fosters in the NC area regarding the situation.![]()
