Robeson County Animal Shelter North Carolina. Is anyone nearby that can verify this?

Nope, not sarcastic. They are animals! I don't really care. Is it really that horrible that I don't think anything more of a cat or dog than I do about the mice I'm poisoning in my house?

Doesn't change that I'm about 90% sure this is a hoax or mistake based on people not being able to read.

It is to me, but as long as they just remain thoughts or feelings, I guess there's nothing anyone can or should do about it. Have you never had a pet?

It is absolutely horrible to think that they would do something like that to have a few days off, HOWEVER, we had the same rumor last year at our local shelter, one that my co-workers and I made regular donations to and it just wasn't true. We were all set to go down there to protest, when one of my co-workers called and spoke with them. They were only closing for Christmas, NOT killing the animals, and someone had agreed to come in and take care of the animals during the time they would be closed. The majority of the people that work or volunteer there are animal lovers and would not even conceive of doing this.

To be safe, calls should be made, perhaps a visit to the shelter if anyone is in the area. Speak with someone there for more information. My guess is that it is just another rumor, just like what happened in my town last year.

It seems strange to me that they would kill these animals off for a 4 day weekend. The fact that the ads say call by 12/22 *may* just be the shelters way of saying they are closed for the 4 day holiday.

It seems odd that for a 4 day weekend they just couldnt leave out extra food and water and have their holiday. Cruel definitely - but not a cruel as euthanasia.

I also wondered about the question posed on this thread - what are they going to tell the posters who arrive 12/29 looking for the pet...ie "you shouldve come 12/22 - " It *looks* like this message isnt posted on ALL of the ads. Wonder why this group is singled out. Maybe they have special health concerns? Actually as I go through the ads, now I am not able to find a single ad without the LAST DAY message. Its seems strange they would kill all animals...what happens on 12/29 when they reopen? They say whoops we have no animals sorry? That just seems silly.

I agree that anyone so inclined should email the shelter - there are email addresses posted all over these ads, to get more specifics, and report back.

I work for a humane society and we have gotten frantic calls from people wanting to adopt dogs because they got e-mails saying that these dogs were in danger of being euthanized. Our dogs are adopted so quickly that that isn't a issue for us, but some group saw our pet listings and sent these e-mails out that weren't quite the truth.

We are closed for adoptions until December 26 because we don't want people to give animals as pets. Could this shelter be doing the same thing?

Yes I have owned many pets, but that is what they are, pets. I take care of them, love on them, sometimes want to choke them when they wont shut up, and I am very sad when they die, but they are still just animals. I don't want to kill animals I just don't really care.

What they say on that site seems very clear to me. They are closing for a few days and you wont be able to get an animal then, so you better hurrry (or you can;t get that pet for Christmas, which btw is a terrible idea... never get pets for gifts)

I don't care one bit. They're animals. Animals which have been overbred by all the idiots who just have to have kittens and puppies and think its mean to spay and neuter. Who cares, they will have a full shelter in a month.

Now saying that I think this is all a fake story anyway. They don't say anywhere on that site that the animals will be killed. They say to contact by the 22 because they are going to be close for Christmas. I don't know many shelters open on everyday, that doesn't mean they kill their animals every time they close.

I received an update saying rescues have stepped up to take the following:

"Update: These dogs and cats have a rescue commitment: aiden, ally, cindy, kally, jacob, tabitha, marissa, perry, serena and pups, bubble, bull terrier pups, scruffy terrier pups, scruffy, tracy, shep/chow pups and sarah."

When they post "last day" that does usually mean last day. Most shelters only post that for pets that will no longer be available after a certain date. If it just a case of the shelter closing then "last day" is not put next to the animals name. They just list that the shelter will be closed for whatever dates for adoptions in the info section.

I have emailed the shelter to verify this is the truth, but the rescue groups I am in seem to think it is. Normally I don't read the Urgent requests in my groups becuase I know they are trying to find homes for "last day" pets but it is usually one or two from a shelter that is overcrowded that they are trying to get pulled into a rescue and most are from Ga shelters that would require transports. I volunteer as an overnighter for a transport rescuer that rescues from Ga and usually the babies are headed to Pa or NY to be foster/adopted. At this point I am too ill to take on fosters and be able to work with them or even do overnights. I really miss it, but I try to keep posted by reading my rescue emails.
I will post the shelter reply when and if I get one. Hopefully it is just an employee/volunteer that has started this and it is not true, but with the rescues stepping in to take a number of them into their already full rescues I tend to think it may be true.

Remember one thing. We are animals too. Some with less heart then the pets I have had, or the wildlife I have watched feed their young.

I understand being closed to adoptions, but do you list as "last day" or do you just list and give the closed info in info section?
BTW I think giving pets as a Christmas gift or as a gift to another person is a bad idea unless you are parents that are suprising you kids and have done the homework necessary to know what is involved in caring for a pet. I wish more shelters would follow what yours is doing.
( I have friends that are suprising the kids with a puppy, but before making the decision to get him they are making sure they have all the necessary items and have researched the breed, how to housetrain, and they realize in an ideal world the kids will chip in on care but there is a chance they will be the ones caring for him most of the time. They are also neutering him so he can't get into trouble with the young ladies!)

I have Dr. appts this morning so I have emailed them. I will call when I get home, but I am not sure when that will be. I also have take DS to a funeral home to pay respects to his school receptionists family. I just pray that the rescue group has misunderstood what they were told becuase I am sure that is a possibility. I have free long distance so that is not an issue for me. (It is very helpful to have free ld when you work with rescue groups!)

Yep. That's the first place I checked and I found that story which seems all too close to this one.

It makes national news when I bear get's caught up a tree but this is story has no made one news station.
