Robeson County Animal Shelter North Carolina. Is anyone nearby that can verify this?

Ok - I just spoke with "J" at the shelter. If they are listed on the website as "Last Day 12/22/08" it IS their last day.

ETA: He said that not all animals would be put down today as some have been spoken for. But he would not confirm if that then meant that all the animals left would be euthanized. However, as I go through the website, I am not finding any that have a different date than 12/22. Anyone else?

I changed the title at the urging of another Dis'er. I am now off to the Dr. so I will not be online for awhile. Still waiting to hear from the shelter, but it is early still.
I also have to get ready for a min pin that may be coming to hang out if his owners decide not to keep him. He was a 'gift' for their son over the summer and apparently has seperation anxiety and they don't fell like dealing with him anymore. He isn't easy like their chi is. :sad2: At least I can keep him out of a shelter. I think my cats out weigh him so hopefully he will be easy to deal with even though I am sick.
I need to stay away from the rescue emails/sites until I get better. I think being sick has made me extra sensitive right now and in a fog.
(Besides DH says he is going to block my internet if I don't! )

OK. First of all I believe this is a hoak. But secondly.......and I hestitate to type this w/o sounding like an animal hater because I truely am NOT, but if it is real MAYBE it's because the animals time IS up. They don't specifiy on the website "this animals last day is 12/22 so all the workers can have a 4 day vacation". :confused3
I know our shelter only gives animals a certain amount of time before they are euthanized, it isn't a no-kill shelter and unfortunately all the animals don't get adopted before XXX amount of time. We don't have the space or the funding to keep every animal indefinately.

just a thought, trying to think the best of the shelter here.

What would be the odds each animal came in at the same time and their time was up on the same day? Nill.

HELLO! I called and I spoke to the shelter - see my above post!!!!

I'd like to make a suggestion. Everyone on this htread who is so outraged - get out your checkbook and write a check to the Robeson County Animal Shelter. If you mail it today it will be waiting for the workers by the time they return from their vacation. They will be able to use your donations to care for the homeless animals you care so deeply about.

They would be delighted to receive your support in the form they can best use - so get those checkbooks out, friends!!!! And while you are at it, make a donation to your local shelter, too. Surely you have animals closer to home who are being killed every day - how often do you give that shelter any financial support???

I get tired of hearing peple's outrage if they won't be part of a different solution. It suits me fine to have shelters euthanize unwanted animals because I'm not wililng to support them financially or vote to change any laws that would make people really control this problem once and for all. If you're not willing to do the work financially and keep it up, then the solution that is currently in place shouldn't bother you.

Something is VERY wrong here~apparently the only animals whose last day is not today are the ones in foster care. They are obviously not euthanizing due to space if ALL of these animals are being put down tomorrow.

Can someone local contact an area television station and bring this to their attention? This is heartbreaking and wrong:sad2::sad1:

I'm not finding any info on this.

I clicked on the link on the 1st page and I don't see anything about animals being killed by a certain date.

I call very rude on this post!

If this is a true story it is deplorable and yes, I am outraged. These people should not be running a shelter at all, it should be taken from their hands. I volunteer at my local shelter, have taken in six cats, one I just buried last week, feed feral cats, give to the SPCA...and on and on. I agree with the PP who said contact the local news stations.

I will, but I don't see anything details from the link in the OP.

Animal rescue people can be on occasion a bit reactionary. The ones who send out these mass e-mails about things are usually reactionary and nuts (not referring to the OP, but to the person who sent her the original e-mail). My wife and I have worked with Greyhound Pets of America (a Greyt organization. . .but a lot of those people are also nuts), so I have seen this first hand.

Having said that. . .public shelters are not the best solution for strays, but they are often the only solution. We see dead animals on the side of the road all the time, daily in fact on our street. I don't know how many strays my wife has taken in for us to deliver to the shelter then next day. Unfortunately, public shelters run on tax payer's money, and do not have a budget to keep the animals very long. Chances are, they were going to be put down during the holidays, and well, the shelter is being pragmatic. It is sad, I know, but the fact is, I looked at these animals and the truth of the matter is that a small minority of those available would in fact find furever homes.

People get very emotional over this, but the fact is, these dogs and cats will at least be put down humanly vice spending their lives freezing or starving in the wild, only to be run down by a car.

You want to do something about this?

Get your pets spayed or neutered
Get your pets micro-chipped
Keep your dogs in a fenced in yard
Keep your cats in the house
Encourage your idiot friends to get their pets spayed or neutered, regardless of whether or not it will make their Heinz 57 mutt "feel like less of a man" (an actual excuse given to me once. . .how I hate the mentality towards pets down here)
In fact, encourage all your idiot friends and neighbors to follow the above 5 rules.
Donate to your local chapter of the ASPCA.

When I say "idiot", I'm not referring to all your friends and neighbors, just the idiots.

:sad2:

I volunteer for rescue transports (taking animals from kill shelters to rescues) as well as at my local animal shelter. I also am involved in fundraising for the shelter....so I guess my "outrage" is justified:confused3

Sadly, it doesn't appear that this is a funding issue (although I do encourage support of your local shelter). I find it very strange that ALL of the animals listed on petfinder are being euthanized at the same time. As a pp mentioned....I doubt these animals all came in on the same day.

I'm curious as to why you would even open this thread given your feelings on this matter?:rolleyes1

Oh, and Merry Christmas

On a cocker forum I read at this is apparently true as one of the rescue ladies called and verified this.

They are working on networking all breed rescues in the area.

The more people that work in the area together the better though.

There are currently 73 dogs that need help.

I opened the thread because this is a public message board and I don't have to justify my interest in a subject to you or anyone else.

My comments were aimed at the people who will wring their hands when they hear a news story like this while they continue to live in a community that has exactly the same probnem with overpopulation of animals that they seem to have never noticed before.

If you are the kind of person who donates and helps then you are part of the solution and my comments weren't aimed at you.

I care more about taking care of the homeless and unwanted children and adults than I do the animals. I'll get all worked up about a homeless dog when all of the people in my town are warm, well fed, decently housed, educated, and employed.

And a Merry Christmas to you, too!!!

Thanks you for this..I sent a message to ABClocal..If everyone does the same they may intervene.

Sometimes shelters create a crisis to get people to adopt..Though I admire their goal, I don't like some of the tactics. This may be the case here. I also agree with the PP that some animal/shelter people are nuts, I have met them, but this is the case in all segments of society.

I totally agree with your post, mattsdragon. If everyone followed those 5 rules the problem would cease to exist.

Admirable, but does one mission need to exclude the other? I don't think so.

Way to hit the nail on the head.

Thank you for trying to bring back some perspective.
