Robeson County Animal Shelter North Carolina. Is anyone nearby that can verify this?

Yes

from http://www.answers.com/topic/mohandas-gandhi
Critics of Gandhi have argued that his tactics unnecessarily delayed the departure of the British, precipitated the partition of India, and led to the Hinduization of Congress because of his over-emphasis on religion. His defence of caste especially annoyed the untouchable (outcastes) who were denied political independence due to astute political manœuvres. Few of Gandhi's ideas were put into practice by independent India.

Great. Thanks for your perception (it said his critics argued) and history lesson on Gandhi in the animal rescue thread. :thumbsup2

What is your position on the actual thread topic itself?

Well, we're at 7 pages and three people have posted that they contribute, so I'm making the assumption that at least some of the people who are outraged are nevertheless holding their checkbook tightly closed. As I said, I'd love to be proven wrong about that.

My thoughts are just my personal opinion - I don't care if anybody else feels the same way or not. I think that people are allowed to be irresponsible and that a community handles the fallout from that in the way they can best manage. People can "care" all they want but if they never REALLY do anything to fix the problem then it doesn't mean anything. It's just lip service - that's really the point I was trying to make.

Thx I have contributed extensively to our local shelter. Including money, time, and volunteer work. Our local shelter leaves alot to be desired also, but I know they wouldn't go to the extent of euthenizing animals to get a day off.

I'm sorry I don't get this. People go into jobs knowing they're going to work weekends and holidays. Being a nurse, I worked many Christmas days. I didn't pull the plugs on pts. so I can have a day off.

I know humans and animals, not the same. But seriously, how could those shelter workers sleep at night knowing what they did and how could the community just sit back and let it happen. :sad2:

I don't care one bit. They're animals. Animals which have been overbred by all the idiots who just have to have kittens and puppies and think its mean to spay and neuter. Who cares, they will have a full shelter in a month.

Now saying that I think this is all a fake story anyway. They don't say anywhere on that site that the animals will be killed. They say to contact by the 22 because they are going to be close for Christmas. I don't know many shelters open on everyday, that doesn't mean they kill their animals every time they close.

Nope, not sarcastic. They are animals! I don't really care. Is it really that horrible that I don't think anything more of a cat or dog than I do about the mice I'm poisoning in my house?

Doesn't change that I'm about 90% sure this is a hoax or mistake based on people not being able to read.

Why do feel the need to post something so heartless and nasty! Maybe some opinions should be kept to yourself. Believe me I'm being nice there are other things I want to say but your not worth getting kicked off the DIS. I too believe in Karma :) .

As we have seen here, because they think the current practices are "just fine."

And we're all a bunch of outraged message board freaks who don't do anything but sit around and complain.:rolleyes1

My pleasure.

As for the thread topic, I think it is a great shame that the greediness of many breeders, the stupidity of many dog owners and the ill-considered "save the cuddly puppy" stance of some "animal lovers" leaves animal shelters in the invidious position of euthanise or be overwhelmed.

This is NOT a hoax. I live in NC and it is all over the news.

And I am very glad I don't know you in real life and if that gets me points then so be it.

In another thread I post on ( a clique ) one of the girls saw this story on the news, locally.

This is a shame.

Im aware there are animal all over the place and this joint will be filled right after the holidays, however - this is kinda what this place signed up for when they chose to be an animal shelter, dont'cha think???

I know I personally wouldnt enjoy my holiday time off, after having murdered animals for no reason but to give me a few days to relax!

After accompanying my dad to court cases in the summer when school was out and working in the field I've worked in, I always say ---there is no animal in nature that can match the capacity for cruelty of the human being. I stand by that statement.

I adopted my dog from the local shelter. They said he was about 4-5 weeks old when someone had tried to drown him then put him in a box and threw him in the dumpster. The garbage men found him when they heard him whimpering. I have owned many animals in my life and he is without a doubt the most loving, even tempered, playful dog I have ever known.

He suckers in everyone with his sweetness ~grin~. I walked back into the Vet room after checking on paperwork and the vet was sitting on the floor with him talking baby talk and hugging him. We went to pick him up at the Magic Kingdom Kennel around 6pm and there he was....sitting behind the front desk with a few of the girls working there, eating treats and being hugged and pet! LOL They said "He just looked so sad being alone and he is so sweet, we just had to bring him up here with us".

He stands guard by the pool whenever we are swimming, he wants to be in whatever room we're in, he is very protective of all of us but not aggressive, he will do anything short of standing on his head when someone is crying to make it stop....including sitting on our lap and licking our face....it's hard to keep crying with 125 pounds of dog on your lap and a giant tounge up your nose :rotfl:

What I'm saying is....he has enriched our lives in ways we didn't think possible from a pet and has brought much love and laughter our way. I feel sorry for the person who tossed him away like nothing, they missed out on the best animal companion they could have had. I also feel sorry that any one of these puppies in the pictures could bring the same love and laughter to someone's home but will never have that chance.

Yes, our dog is neutered and the cats are spayed. We volunteer at the shelter and have a monthly allotment from our account to the ASPCA. We also give to the homeless and volunteer at their shelter as well. Not that it matters.

There she is (the chiquita I was talking about!)

That's how I feel about Charley. He is the epitome of 'perfect' and I cant believe anyone wouldnt have kept him and loved him and cherished him until the day he died.

Oh and for those keeping count, I not only donate money to shelters, I also donate my time. I have spent years going to shelters and walking dogs and playing with the cats for hours. I have also adopted from shelters.

We have a big white cat right now called Big Boy whom someone threw out a car window in front of us on the highway when he was just a couple of weeks old. He is now HUGE and the sweetest thing you've ever seen on 4 legs. What this shelter is doing is cruelty plain and simple and no different than the person who threw that precious baby kitty out the window in front of us that day.

What the hell is wrong with people?

ok, peeps lets get back to my original issue with all this. Yes, it is true. I am sure they are now getting flooded with calls about it. The real issue is not funding in this case. The real issue is no one wants to deal with shelter animals over the holiday. If I lived closer I would volunteer to go in and care for them or even make room to foster some.
I will not compare this to people. There is no comparison. SO not even going down that road. I do what I can in that area also. Adults can make choices for themselves and their children. Last I checked animals can't speak up and ask for help. Again no comparison.
Although I can't support financially I do donate food and supplies when I can. I also open my home when I can. A few weeks ago I did an overnight of 15 animals! All had been pulled from a kill shelter and were on their ways to fosters/adoptive homes. I have stayed up with sick animals to make sure they make it through the night. I have bottled feed 2 week old kittens to help them survive. I even have done a form of mouth to mouth on a kitten. She ended up staying in the family and is very happy now. The last several overnights I did I was sick, but still managed.
Unfortunately right now I can't bring any animals in becuase I have 2 sick ones right now and it wouldn't be fair to new ones if they became sick. (Not to mention I can hardly move becuase my tummy hurts so bad!) Since I have already agreed to take a friends minpin if they decide to get rid of him I will not back out. I just am concerned about bringing new ones that I don't know the background on and them possibly getting sick. Again I am probably over reacting right now becuase I don't feel well. I just wish there was a way I could get some of them out and safe myself. Right now I have to rely on those that can get around to help.

Thankyou to everyone that is trying to step up by contacting the rescues they know of and to those that have also called and verified that this was truely going to happen. I know we can't save them all, but we make a difference for those we can! Also thankyou to the person that found the local news stations info and posted it. I had tried to do that earlier but what normally comes easy for me is not so easy right now.
I am going to email the news stations then I must rest. I am exhausted and need to take my pain meds. Again thankyou to those that are helping out in any way they can. We can help make it a Merry Christmas for some animals.

I know someone who also called and was told they cannot adopt out to Massachusetts residents. Apparently people were bringing their puppies up here and were not quarantining them prior to adoptions and many had Parvo and other illness. The Attorney Generals Office sent a letter to the shelter ordering them not to send their animals to MA.

This sounds like a really quality shelter.

:headache: :sad2:

I accept that euthanasia has to happen because of overcrowding and lack of resources, and it's only going to get worse during the recession. And I'd rather the animals die peacefully than fester in crowded shelters or on the street.

However, there are some gorgeous puppies at that particular shelter - they are bound to be adoptable! I don't know the real reason for the mass euthanasia at that shelter (maybe it's a funding issue?), but it seems a shame to kill so many obviously-adoptable dogs and puppies one time. But if there's no money for food, and/or they can't get people to go and look after them over Christmas, what are they to do? They can't let the animals suffer without enough food and drink. Maybe they get so many animals flooding into the shelter every day that they know it won't take long to "replenish the stocks". Yes, I know how cold that sounds. It's very sad, but in many places it's the reality - there are way more dogs than possible homes, so what is one to do? If the dogs clearly will never get homes, would you rather them live in cages forever? I don't believe in the afterlife, especially for pets, so I guess that's why I'd rather them be put to sleep humanely if there is no hope for a home, than to live here on earth for 10 more years or more in a tiny cage.

I wish there were enough funds to allow for sufficient shelters to keep all stray dogs in very humane conditions, even if they are never adopted. We have 2 no-kill shelters like that around here, and it takes tons of donations from wealthy people to keep them going. The local SPCA is not as fortunate, and they kill animals on a regular basis because they have no choice. We chose to adopt from and donate to the SPCA for this reason - to save lives.

I can't quite feel outrage at what is a very common scenario for animals all across the world, but I do feel sad in general, especially for those little puppies - I have a particular soft spot for baby animals.

Some TV stations & newspapers in the area have already been contacted by phone :cool2: .

Hopefully, this particular situation will highlight the problem in this country with out-of-control pet births & unwanted animals. Maybe more people will now get their own pets spayed/neutered and will also be willing to assist with funding for spay/neuter programs available to all pet-owners.

It would be nice if some good would come out of it.

agnes!

I hate to say this, but what's the difference- most of them will be killed anyhow. Why keep them caged longer. There is no shortage of shelter animals. I wish there was. I think spaying and neutering should be the law, but until HUMANS get their act together thousands of animals die daily- I'm sure these shelter workers are used to it. It is part of their daily life to kill animals they were just caring for. Someone has to do it. We need more laws to stop pet overpopulation so killing like this is no longer an option. I think people who have unneutered pets are the real murderers and should be treated as such.

The difference is that they don't HAVE to be killed. I used to volunteer at a shelter for years and the truth is that MOST of them are not going to die anyhow as you put it. MOST of them got adopted by wonderful families. I don't think anyone disagrees with you that more needs to be done to help keep animlas out of shelters. Spaying and neutering needs to be top priority as well as people needing to just be good owners. Don't throw your pet out by the side of the road because times are tough. But, at the same time, this situation at this particular shelter is disgusting and could easily be avoided.

You make some very valid points, and I too can understand how government funded shelters have to make a choice.

The outrage from this particular scenario is that it appears the overcrowding/lack of funds isn't the issue. The issue is that the county government appears to have decided that the workers should have the holidays off. Now, it would seem to me that there are other government workers who will have to work (police, fire, etc) regardless of the day of the year. But the staff at the local animal shelter are given a paid holiday to essentially ignore their duties. It really wouldn't take much effort for someone to go in for an hour or two over the holidays to provide the basic necessities of care for these animals - food and water.

Agreed, the biggest problem, IMO is complacency. But as more and more people become more vocal about the problem, maybe some good will come of it.
