RIP Catostrophe Canyon(Catastrophic Ending)

Would have been better if they had just upped the amount of gas in the tanker and blew the sucker up!

Sad to see this photo, given how much of an integral part of the park's opening this attraction played. This was a major headliner back in the beginning. Of course, that says a lot about what MGM Studios was like back on opening day.

Wow, so sad seeing these picutres! DH and I really enjoyed the Backlot Tour. It was a must every year! Glad we got to ride it one last time before it closed!

I was always pretty upset the Backlot Tour closed off (I thought it was cool seeing behind the scenes of MGM/Hollywood Studios, and all the props/houses). These pictures just put the nail on the coffin. I'll never forget going on this ride for the first time with my family. We have video of myself with my cousins (all of us were 8 at the time) and the video is nothing but my cousins and I SCREAMING from the truck horn and the water.

I am thankful that I was able to experience it before it's demise, and a bit sad to see it go, BUT . . . excited for what is coming to DHS!

Fun attraction, I think the problem with it (and most of the "making of movie" attractions at MGM Studios) is they were one and done ... The Backlot Studio Tour was just a boring attraction after you've done it once, driving past costume departments, the canyon, the big water tank. All really neat and exciting the first time, but once that newness and surprise was gone, it was just a boring old tour where you learn things (that you already know from the last time).

I think LMA was a great addition to use up some of that old Backlot space once the tour become old and tired .. it as much more exciting way to showcase "the making of movies" .. much like the Indiana Jones Stunt show was.

At least the Backlot Studio Tour was a thousand times more exciting than "Twister - Ride it Out" at Universal Studios .. goodness that was awful. Stand in line for a while to stand and watch things get "blown" over in a very fake looking way while a fan blows around? How did that even last as long as it did?

It is sad to see it go . .but the "Making of movies" theme has been long dead at DHS, so it needed to go. Besides, with tons (or all) the effects being done digitally, the need for a park to showcase a "movie studio" is gone.
Toy Story Land and Star Wars Land will be much needed overdue additions to that park.

I like the backlot tour. The kids found it interesting and fun also.

It has a big part of education in it, which makes it meaningful. Closing it to make it all the rides of Toy Story and Star Wars, as exciting as it sound, things are just getting shallow in Disney.

It was a cool attraction, but the backlot tour had degenerated so much that this was the only fun part left. I also liked the similar one at Universal in the subway, but that's gone too (they still do it at Universal Hollywood - now that's a backlot tour!). Alas, it is time for new things and Hollywood Studios desperately needs them.

The canyon is still part of the studios in Disneyland Paris.
Maybe I should make the effort to go and see it as it is not available in Florida anymore.

Kind of sad to look at-the Canyon(Backlot Tour) was one of my first stops on my first trip to WDW.

It always amazed me at the amount of fire and water used every few minutes all day long.:)

I was feeling nostalgic towards this attraction and other attractions in DHS after looking at these photos, so I went to Youtube and searched for MGM Studios. A video came up of this guy that went around the park (early February of this year) showing parts of MGM Studios that are still there. He had really good view of Catastrophe Canyon still mostly in piece, and he showed Walt's airplane. I completely forgot about that part of the tour. He questioned what was going to happen to the airplane, and I'm wondering the same thing.

Here's the video for reference

Disney is an ever-changing animal and I get that. Still the nostalgic side of me hates to see that go. Our first trip was in 1997 ("Remember the Magic"/Pink Castle) and we had fun at the old MGM backlot tour, including CC, house facades, etc. We have great memories of that trip.

I was going through pics the other day of the xmas lights when the golden girls house was still there. My daughter wanted to see them. Lol. It was actually film too not digital. One of our first trips together when my wife and I were going out. Good times. So many memories. I really try to capture everything anymore cause you just don't know when something will be gone.
