Revival of the angry thread!

I have to agree with Deb. Self employed people are not counted in the statistics, there is no way to track them even tho it is a huge part of the American work force. And these are a large percentage whom are out of work.

No one has called us or anyone I know asking for a survey.

The Household Survey, which is done monthly and samples 60,000 households includes farm workers, the self-employed, and people who may work off the books.

Don't feel excluded, because you're not. With a sample size of 60,000 it would take 200 years to get to every household. I don't know holw long they've been doing them.

The problem with the survey is not the sample size, that is more than adequate, the problem is getting accurate responses from respondents.

If they called 60,000 households per month, and only limited the calling to those people who claimed self-employment on their 2000 census, that's 720,000 households a year.

I took a gander at Los Angeles County, CA to get an idea of figures. (I chose this b-cuz it's probably one of the more densely populated counties in the country - but that's a guess). Given there were over 3 million households in 2000 just in LA County alone, I'd say 200 years is a very conservative figure. That figure I assume, is calculated on legal citizens responding to the census, and not the abundance of illegals in California. I wonder though, do they follow up on no answers - or just keep going down the list? Also, given the fact that our society is so transient, how do they maintain a phone or mailing data base? Do they include the 16 year old kid mowing lawns - or just anyone who received a W-2 or 1099- or whatever IRS form you fill out when you're self employed?

I know statistics are only as good as the info received, but I also know that mathmeticians can make figures produce whatever outcome they want. I quit trusting corporate figures when I discovered that loss of sales wasn't actual loss of sales, but loss of perceived/projected sales.

Hershey Foods has just announced the closing of the York Peppermint Patty plant in Reading, PA. Your York patties will now be made in Mexico. Thanks, Hershey.

My last comments on the survey ---

1.) It has NOTHING to do with the 2000 census or any other census - it is a monthly survey. The Bureau does tons of things other than the census

2.) It is HOUSEHOLDS and not individuals

3.) IIRC it is a mail survey sent to a random sample of mailing addresses. They may suplement it with phone surveys, I don't know..

4.) Look at the BLS website.

People get too hung up on numbers - it's the change that's important. Think ratiojnally about this. Part of the problem now is that people are very negative and depressed. Consumer confidence is an attitude and plays a big part in the economy. Don't get caught up in it - which is easy to say but hard to do.

They will now be called el Yorkos. I live pretty close to Hershey and have many happy memories of FIG. I still go there once in a while for a PX/Clothing Sales fix or a Buffalo burger at Funks.

I dont think Milton Hershey would be very happy, much the same as Walt Disney.

So, now, when I bite into a York Peppermint Patty, instead of getting the sensation of speed skiing down the Swiss Alps with the brisk wind whipping through my skin cells....will I get the sensation of sweating in the 110 degree sun, listening to Santana, while the flies buzz around my hot tamales??? Do I really WANT that sensation????

I think I just stopped eating them. Damned shame too, that was one of the few chocolate treats I could safely indulge in now and then w/o worrying about peanut contamination. Guess I'll just stick with beer.

Lets just send every bit of our money to other countries and boost them out while our grand children go broke paying off our debt
Why doesn't the government just tax the crap out of these unAmerican worthless money grubbing Bast#%$&*@
I am tired of american companys Outsourcing just to increase the CEO pay.
Lets go back to the tariff system!!
If they pay $1 an hour for labor let the government adjust the price to support the American worker.
