It's been several years since we dined at AP so I was looking forward to this meal. I like the look and feel of the Wilderness Lodge itself, and we usually stop in the Territory Lounge for a pre-meal libation. This visit we were fortunate enough to be dining with another couple--Pete and Lee Lebowitz from Ft. Meyers Fla. then in Orlando to attend a wedding. They are friends of ours whom we met from the International Sinatra Society.
Our PS were for 6:30 on a Tuesday evening and after the obligatory stop at the Territory Lounge we were seated promptly. For appetizers ,we had the Braised Penn Grove Mussels with fennel, Lemon and Grilled Sourdough, along with the Crispy Venison Spring Rolls with Hot Sweet and Sour sauce. Both were excellent.
Entree selection was fairly easy--3 of us ordered the Cedar Plank Roasted Cypress Island Salmon (topped with Maple/Whiskey glaze) while Mrs. U ordered the Roasted Free Range Chicken Breast w/Smoky Bacon Two-Potato hash. The Salmon was good as always, and is "de-planked" (un-planked? dis-planked?) tableside before it is served. This time I couldn't really taste that maple/whiskey like I remember, and I wish they might crank up the glaze a little. The fish was served with Celery Root Smash and Swiss chard--but ordinary mashed potatoes are cheerfully substituted on request.
Mrs U was very pleased with her chicken breast--had a rich, golden color and a delightful taste.
Mrs. U and I split the dessert of that excelent AP Cobbler, served with seasonal berries and vanilla ice cream.
For drinks, the ladies had wine (Mrs. U went with the menu suggested pairings) while the fellows had beer. Fortunately, AP has Michelob Honey Lager on draft, so no way I could pass that up!! They used to carry an excellent micro-brew that was made just for that restaurant, but it's been gone a # of years now.
Service was excellent that evening. Our server was very attentive--in fact, we had arrived a bit earlier than our friends and were seated early. Our server made a point of asking their names and when they arrived, she was at the poduium to meet them and escorted them to the table. A nice touch, and appreciated.
The restaurant was fairly crowded that evening, but not full. Dress, as usual, varied widely, from theme-park casual thru dressier slacks and collared shirts.
All in all a fine meal and AP remains one of my top 10 favorite restaurant at WDW.
