Retin A - Dr. just prescribed - does ins. cover?

I used retin-a as a teen and started using it again two years ago (late 30s). I skip a day if my face starts to flake or get too red. I also use a clarisonic brush which is awesome! My acne is much better but hormones, greasy food and stress will make it worse. My biggest problem with using retin-a was finding a liquid foundation that worked for me. Everything I tried highlighted the dead skin on my face. I now use Costco's liquid foundation and it covers well. That's my only complaint about retin-a. Also, like pp's said, you need a moisturizer with SPF.

During the day do u use a spf moisturizer or sunblock and a moisturizer. Which do u use that u like?

If i like the results from using it only on my jawline, then i will use in more areas of my face after the summer as i am an outside person and enjoy the beach in the summer.

I only used the Retin A one day so far and skipped yesterday - no redness at all - i will use tonight and then probably continue everyother night for the rest of the week to get use to it. How long did it take to see results - i've read "months"!

Thanks for all the feedback

I used Retin-A when I was a teen. It did help but like someone else mentioned you have to go through the break out and skin flaking stage first. I also ended up having to get acid peels done.
Beware of the sun. It makes your face extra sensitive to the sun. Make sure to where sunscreen and limit your time in the sun. You don't want to get rid of the breakouts only to end up with sunspots or worse.

Both of these reasons are why i'm only using the Retin A on my jawline where i'm breaking out - because its getting warm and sunny here and i am out alot and also because i don't want my skin to get worse. I am also on an oral antibiotic and another face cream that i use in the morning...

I was also going to suggest an out of the country pharmacy. Unfortunately, the price of drugs in this country is ridiculous, with or without insurance. And I'm sick and tired of being prescribed something and having some clown at an insurance company decide I don't need that, and tells me some alternative.

For instance, I was prescribed Symbicort. The insurance calls my DR and questions whether or not I need it. They suggest others. (FTR, I love Symbicort. It's been, for me, the best asthma med, I've ever used) As the battle of the inhalers went on, I had to pay full price ($260) for my uncovered Symbicort.

Finally they agreed to pay for it. Well... sorta. I still have an $60 co-pay on it. :crazy2: This same inhaler, this same medication, in India - where there is no BS patent laws is.... **drum roll** $8. Eight bucks! So even with it "covered", it's cheaper out of the country.

Annnnnways - I use www.alldaychemist.com . (for 3 years, now)
Never had an ounce of bad luck, with them. I get a lot of stuff from them, and will continue to do so.

Every drug company they use, as their suppliers, are all genuine pharma companies used by the W.H.O. ANNNNNND the FDA.

P.S. ~ After paying $120/bottle for Latisse, I also began ordering CareProst from ADC.....for $10.

Thanks for posting this. I had been using MedsMex but alldaychemist is even better!! How long does it normally take to receive it after ordering?
Thanks

Not always. But CVS put mine on some discount card because my insurance didn't cover (i'm too "old") and it was only 28 bucks or so.
IT IS WONDERFUL!
Just use a lot of good moisturizer!

What did u start Retin A for? Acne or Wrinkles?

How were the first few weeks on it for u?

My daughter 12 was really breaking out especially on her forehead. I asked a co-worker who has teens if she had found anything helpful. She saved me a doctors visit because she had taken her son to the doctor in many times (he ended up with the doctor doing some type of peal). I purchase what her doctor recommended and with in a week I saw improvement. Now a month later it is probably a tenth of what she had and is not red.
The products are over the counter and he did not recommend a brand but told what ingredients should be in the product.

Face wash 1-2 times daily (can dry face too much) 2% Salicylic acid
Spot treatment for break outs 1 time a day 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide

It took me a while to locate the right products and there are many brands to choose from but I think I paid $20 for both and she has not even used half of it yet. I am not sure if I can say brands but we ended up the the Neutrogena brand.
Good luck.
P.S. Retin A makes you very sensitive to the sun so use your sunscreen!

I only use the retin a at night. I wash my face with cetaphil, put on a bleach cream, retin a, then aquaphor lotion. My dermatologist told me if it is bothering my skin to mix it with the lotion or put a think layer of lotion on before the retin a. I had horrible melasma after my second pregnancy and it made a huge difference! I had tried many different over the counter products before consulting the dermatologist. So glad I did!

Sorry - just saw this.....

It takes about 2 weeks.

About-ish.

I just ordered, so I went and looked. I ordered on 4/7 and rec'vd 2 packages - one on the 24th, and one on the 25th.

just thought i'd give an update on my Retin A Micro 0.04%

I've been using it for almost 2 weeks! i started using it everyother day - the last week i've been using it everyday. I only put it on my jaw area where i'm having acne. just the last couple of days i see some of my whiteheads that were just flat but there for a couple of months just wash right off! My skin is not red and flaky - it does feel a bit tight at times.

I am still on Doryx 150 1x a day - still seem to be getting new under the skin large pimples so i am a bit depressed over that. Going to the Dermatologist today so i'll see what she thinks.

Glad to hear your skin adjusted so quickly! I don't know how old you are but I'm in my late 30s and I use retin A for acne but it's also the best for fighting wrinkles. I put it on my forehead too even though I get most of my acne near my chin and cheeks.

Is Retin A the only thing u use for the acne? and do u find it working well?

I am in my mid 40's and the only reason i'm not using it on my entire face is because the warm weather is coming and i will be outside alot and enjoy the beach so i am planning to use it all over in the Fall! How long have u been using Retin A?

I think Retin A is definitely a must for me. I used it for years as a teenager, then started again two years ago.

I switch products here and there. Currently I use Revision Brightening Face Wash with my Clarisonic (love the Clarisonic!). Clinique makes a really great on the spot acne treatment that I use when I have a really bad spot. Also, a good moisturizer is important because dry skin will ironically break out more often. I have recently switched back to EltaMD SPF 41 tinted sunscreen as my foundation. It's perfect in the summer to protect my face since the Retin A makes you more sensitive to sun. I put it on and then I wait a minute and put pressed powder on top. I think that's all I'm currently doing.

My regular Dr. prescribed antibiotics (which I opted not to use) and topical antibiotics which didn't help.

Oh, and if your dermatologist does microdermabrasion it is really helpful. Around here they charge about $100 per session so I only go every 6 months but it seems to make a difference.

For me it was diet... stopped drinking milk and eating much ice cream and lo and behold the persistent chin and jawline breakouts I'd always had cleared right up.

I've always been a big milk drinker - probably a glass a day but i have since cut it out ALOT! did u cut out dairy as well?

I use the 0.01% (the 0.04% was way to harsh on my skin and made it like tissue paper).
A get very few breakouts now and some of my wrinkles have disappeared! However, my skin is very sensitive now. VERY. When I wash my face in the show skin peels off when I rub gently. It took a few months for my skin to not stop being bright red. I stuck it out and for me it was worth it. We don't have a drug plan (Canada) so we pay out of pocket. I find the $40-$50 a tube I pay to be worth it since it lasts over 6 months.

My order from AllDayChemist came yesterday 5/4. I ordered on 4/21. I ordered their product for Renova, the cream. Haven't tried yet as I'm using up what I've got first.
