Resales from Disney?

We are considering buying into DVC, so I'm searching the boards for info. It has been my understanding that the only points available to buy direct from Disney are at SSR. I just read a thread about a DISer who bought points at VWL directly from Disney. Is this possible? I really like the VWL and BCV and I know that these are sometimes difficult to find through outside resale so I would be interested to know if you can buy through Disney. Thanks for any help!

Here's the thread:

Yes, Disney sometimes has a few resale points to sell at $84. Call the sales number, get assigned a "guide" and make it clear which resort interests you. You're extremely unlikely to be able to buy something immediately and might not be able to buy anything at all, but sometimes they will waitlist people. Trying it is free, so go ahead.

I'm a 'DVC member want to be' in a process of purchasing VWL resale so here are some of my thoughts on this subject.

You can purchase VWL directly from Disney but there are numerous (approximately 60 I was told) DVC members on a waitlist to purchase the same points you are looking for. Plus if you are not a DVC member already, the minimum pts. you MUST purchase from Disney is 150.
In a resale market, you can buy as little as you want. Of course, added cost of buying resale (closing cost for one) might not make it cost effective to buy just a few points.
If you are looking to finance and want to start using your membership right away, buying directly from Disney is not a bad idea.

It's not exactly a resale thorugh Disney. You would buy an original contract from them. If Disney buys back a bunch of contracts at any of their resorts, they can break those contracts up into smaller amounts. If you are buying a real resale from a broker, the contract is what it was when it was originally sold by Disney to the person you are buying it from.

If I decide to sell my 350 VWL contract through a broker, it remains whole. If Disney takes it by ROFR, then they and only they can break it up into amounts as small as 25 points and sell 14 separate add-on contracts from my original.

Good luck. If you really want VWL or BCV, it won't hurt to call Disney first and see what they can do. Just tell them you will buy but really don't want SSR, so you will go the resale route if you have to. Most buyers probably don't even know there is a resale market out there.

Good lduck.

The Timeshare Store is one of this sites sponsers. We resently purchases thru them for OKW and did not pay anything close to $84.00 Disney is selling their resales for. I would give then a try before Disney based on our very positive relationship we had with them. They have many listing that change daily. We told them what we wanted and had an offer in in about a week on a listing we were interested in. The rest is us now waiting for our welcome package from DVC....smjj

I was able to get the boardwalk this week, switching from the SSr .. My guide told me today there is about 10,000 pts left for the boardwalk..

Wow, that's a lot of points.....

I was able to do a new 150 pt contract at BCV through Byron (my dvc guide) this week!

We just purchased an additional 100 pts at the Beach Club in our use year thru Disney and our guide, 84 a point, just sign the paperwork and it's all done. No closing costs, which I heard you have to pay thru other brokers. We were on a waiting list about 3weeks.

We bought SSR a few months back and at the same time bought 50 Wilderness Lodge points in the same use year without any wait whatsoever. Maybe it is use year that makes a difference in what is available.

Definitely buy at VWL or BCV if they are your favorites. These are the two smallest DVC resorts, so booking them in the future could be difficult at times if you don't own there.

As far as the difficulty in finding the contracts for them at resale, you should contact each of the resale brokers and let them know what you're looking for. Most of the BCV contracts don't even make it onto the market. VWL contracts move pretty quickly as well. Many have reported success at letting the brokers know what you're looking for.

Good luck!

Buying these points direct through DVC should be even more difficult. DVC acquires points at the sold out resorts via ROFR. So, before a point can even get into DVC's hands, it has to pass through the resale market.

Besides, as a potential member, there aren't a lot of compelling reasons to buy direct from DVC. If you absolutely need to finance through DVC, you could give it a shot. Just be aware of the premium you'll be paying. DVC's lowest interest rate is around 10%, vs. 5% you can get on a home equity loan these days. And, you're going to pay $10-15 more per point through DVC.

Add-ons for existing members are a little bit easier to justify--particularly when looking for a specific Use Year or small number of points.

But as a brand new member, get in touch with the resale brokers and let them work their magic.

It's true that home equity loans are lower in rate than the loans Disney offers. But the other side of the coin is the fact that a home equity loan is a "secured" loan--it's secured against the value of your house. So if you default, the bank can try to take your home. Disney's loan is more expensive (although you can pay it back quickly without prepayment penalties), but it's not secured against your house.

Absolutely true, rocketriter.

More than anything I was trying to communicate that by going through DVC, you end up paying quite a premium between the higher interest rate AND the disparity in point cost which could easily add $1500-2000 in principle on just a 150 point contract. And that additional principle would continue to accrue interest as well.

For those who aren't comfortable with a Home Equity line, it might be better to get an unsecured loan through their local bank, even if the interest rate is higher than DVC's. Those funds could then be used toward a resale contract at significantly less than $84 per point.

We went thru a reseller as I mentioned above. Even though we payed some closing cost we got the resort we wanted(OKW) and still payed much less than if we had gone thru DVC. I don't think DVC wants the public to know about resales outside Disney. We were telling some friends of my wifes's about our deal. They were talking to DVC about SSR and had never heard of resellers before and were very glad they talked to us. They now have many more options to choose from...smjj

Smjj, please make sure your friends understand that there are essentially no SSR points available right now in resale. If they want that resort, they must buy from DVC--which would get them that resort and the 2050 expiration. Through resale they could get any other DVC resort that comes on the resale market (a couple of resorts are scarce) at a lesser price, with a 2042 expiration.

Be aware that the Timeshare Store, a sponsor of this board, does offer financing for 5 years. I don't know much more about it, except that I mentioned to an agent there that I wanted another contract once I had saved up some money for it, and he told me that they could finance it there. I am assuming that if you have some credit problems they would be far pickier than Disney is, since Disney takes nearly anybody who has a down payment.

rocketriter:

They know, we had a lenghty conversation with them and explained the whole process to them. They had never heard of resellers at all and had no idea anyone else but DVC sold points or old contracts. They are interested in several different DVC resorts and now they understand they may be able to save a chunk of change by going thru a reseller. They had never heard of the DIS or other websites such as the DIS. I told them to check the DIS out so maybe they will post a response here on this post!!....smjj

Its seems like the breakeven point between disney (at $84pp) and resale is somewhere around 30 points. If you only want 25 points for an add-on, there really isn't going to be much difference, and Disney may be even be cheaper once you take into consideration the closing costs. Over 30 some points, resale would be a better value.

On another thread tamu91 has reported an SSR resale. RuthnPaul spotted another one. They are priced at 78.00 per point. They are being offered for sale by this site's sponsor, The Timeshare Store.

Timeshare Store Resales

Good luck. This should give your friend one more option.
