Dh and I have all our CC in consolidation. How do we rent a car? I know hertz takes Debit, but usually you at least have to put a credit card up front. :confused3

Most rental car companies have stopped accepting cash or debit cards as the deposit for a rental car. I hope you find one, but you may be out of luck.

My hubby just rented a car from Alamo. On the reservation confirmation, it has the following phrase:

Important Policy Information:
Debit card use at this location requires proof of a roundtrip transportation
ticket at the time of rental. A Credit Card in the name of the renter must be
presented at the time of pick-up.

Now, I am not sure if this is "either" or "and".

If it is either, then Alamo may be able to help you.

Carol

We have used our visa checkcard at Dollar, I believe they held the amount of rental plus 15%. We had no problems. Below is from their website:

Debit Card usage: At some locations, it is the policy of DOLLAR to perform a credit inquiry on customers who present a debit card as payment at the time of rental. Dollar has contracted with Equifax Credit Information Services, Inc. to perform a CARcredit99Score. This type of inquiry is a credit evaluation service for the automobile financing and leasing industries. The credit inquiry is posted on the customer's credit report and may have an effect on the customer's credit evaluation. In the event that a customer's credit score does not meet the minimum required by Dollar Rent A Car, the customer will not be allowed to rent or provide another form of payment. Dollar's debit card policy complies with all applicable federal and state laws.

Have a good time :earsboy: :earsboy: :earsboy:

I was just putting together a list of car rental agencies which do not require a credit card. The following is what I have discovered so far by calling each of the numbers and asking specifically about renting with a debit card at the Orlando airport. I did not include the companies that require a pull on the credit report. As you can see, some of the below companies require proof that you do have a round-trip flight. They also want you to use a debit card with a mastercard or visa logo. If you are planning on renting at any other site than Orlando, the policies may be different. Happy planning!

1. Budget1-800-527-0700
2. Alamo with RT ticket1-800-327-9633
3. National with RT 1-800-227-7368
4. Enterprise with RT ticket 1-800-325-8007
5. EZ Rental with RT ticket 1-800-277-5171
6. Hertz with RT ticket 1-800-654-3131

Thanks for all the good info!! I can't seem to convince DH it's worth it. He said that I added on an extra night in the beginning just because it was going to take an hour to get to WWOS. Oh well! There is still hope. Thanks again!

Ask them if they do a credit check.... Consumer Reports had a report about a year ago that some credit card companies who were allowing you to use a Debit card were also doing credit checks. The credit checks appeared to look as though you were attempting to buy the car and caused some issues with later credit requests. I would also think that if they are doing credit checks and your credit is not good they will either ask for a depoist and/or put a larger hold on your cash!!!

I know from past experience with Hertz that they put a HUGE hold on your account. (I gave them the debit by misstake... had to drive back to the airport and fix it!)

I found this info doing a quick search

Lizzie - do these companies all allow renters to rent with only a debit card? My understanding is that most companies will allow you to pay with a debit card but that you have to present a credit card at the time of rental (ideally, the renter's own ;)
Okay, I just did a little research of my own. I already know Alamo, Hertz and L & M allow debit card rentals, usually with proof of round trip air passage.
National does, as well; EZ does but requires proof of insurance or else you MUST purchase their insurance plus a $200 or 35% hold (ditto with L & M, by the way); Budget says to "Always check the terms and conditions at the end of your reservation for any additional location specific information regarding methods of payment."; and Enterprise accepts debit cards ONLY as payment, not at the beginning of the rental. Oh, and Hertz also allows cash rentals with something called a Cash Deposit ID Card, applications for which are available at your local Hertz office.

Hey, thanks, Lizzie - I learned a lot of new stuff today!

Yes, only a debit card with the visa logo or mastercard logo is needed according to the conversations I had with customer service. No credit card is needed and no credit pull will be done. I was only checking on the policies for the Orlando airport, though. Anyone who is thinking about renting at another location should call and ask about the use of debit cards at that location since the policies may differ. On a recent trip to Denver, I used only my debit card with EZ Rental , and had no problems, but I did call ahead to make sure. Good luck!!
