renting / transferring/ losing pts

I find it interesting that you paid the same price w and w/o points. We found that using DVC points outside of DVC isn't worth it for us. Even exchanges at local hotels off season are super high

I have had no trouble renting points when I don't use them myself. I have never done the transferring thing and you have to be a little carefull with dates of when you are making the reservations for renters. You could get stuck losing points if you are not careful.

The new rules on the Rent/Trade board make it much more difficult to rent extra points. I would only buy what you need!

I don't think that the new rules are going to make it difficult.

50 posts over 6 months is very little. Basically 2 posts a week. Someone could do that in five minutes once a week. In a few months, once every one who was not posting gets the idea, the rent board will be hopping again.

Still.....you should buy what you are planning to use and also maintain your Dis membership! You may find yourself where I did this year and have to cancel a couple of vacations and then have to rent. The Dis was a wonderful option and I was able to rent most of the extra points and reschedule my trip although it's for a shorter period. I'm using the extra few bucks to add some days on the deluxe dining plan and signature restaurants here I come, lol!

I have a brother and sister-in-law who have DVC points. We also swap/trade/transfer points around to fit everyone's vacation plans. It always seems like when I have extra, the others need extra points that year.

If you have friends or family who own at DVC, it makes things easier when you are over/short points for the year

We owned at 2 resorts but sold one and only hold the points we would want to use each year. We have rented when not using them or taking a cruise. I have never been stuck with points always someone available to rent them. Good luck with your decision.

I've been a member since 1998 and have never lost any points. I have always been able to bank or rent a few to make it work.

:) DH and I were going to purchase 200 points but I decided on 210 as a small pad--and it didn't really add any cost per se to the contract but could get us an extra night in a value or close to it. SO far we have only stayed in studios since we do not kids and have been able to get a studio for our parents on the same trip in early Dec.

we bought into DVC (BWVs) with 270 points, when our kidlets were little. we would stay in a 1 bdrm for 8-12 days, then a 2-bdrm every other year for a week. we added on 60 points at BCV, then 100 at SSR, leaving us with 400 points.
now DH and i go in oct, and 27yo DD and i in may, each for about 10-12 days. we found we prefer studios (more than enough room, without feeling overwhelmed - we don't cook, and enjoy the pool while doing laundry so no need or desire for a full kitchen and washer/dryer:)).

we rarely wind up with extra points, but found it easy to trade or rent when it did happen (normally, i am contacted by previous renters/tranferees asking if i've any points available - so no searching on my part).

i wouldn't recommend buying with intent to rent; as others said, the market might not always be there, and the small profit might not be worth the time and hassle of trying to find renters (initially, you will most likely find a lot of looky-loos who are just window shopping with no firm plans but are simply "dreaming of going to WDW one day", who ask multiple owners to check the same dates, who try to get points for a rediculously low price, with creative sob stories, who have no idea how DVC works, etc).
david's is an option, but i've noticed he has gotten a lot more selective on the resorts and quantity he will rent.
hth:)
