I know this prob. is not in the right place, but could somebody please direct me to the right place to ask questions about renting DVC points? I have found the rent/transfer thread but that only seems to be for people who have points to get rid of. I am interested in renting points, but have a few questions and wonder where to post. TIA:goodvibes

You could start by posting your questions here. Worst case, this will get moved to the right place. I am sure there are people here that will be happy to help answer your questions.

I don't know if you can post a "wanted" for points, I have rented several times in the past and you just have to know specifically what you want...

resort, (usually have 3 preferred)
dates,
who is traveling (names and ages)
points needed (you can check on the DVC points calculator)http://www.wdwinfo.com/resort/dvcpoint.cfm

And look on the rent/trade board to see if it is available...PM that person, or reply to their post..

Good luck.

Always ask for references and CALL them to talk...I am always more comfortable after talking to someone on the phone.

I have rented 5 times and ALWAYS had a great experience.
Good Luck :)

Thanks for your replies. Here are a few questions.

1. I have never used PayPal before, if they require this for payment is it easy to set up? (I'm a little in the dark ages when it comes to some things :rolleyes1)

2. I think I read some where that when you rent you only get maid service every 4th day with refresh on towels each day? Is this correct? Not that I really care, I am just planning on tipping mousekeeping and want to know how to plan.

Hmm I guess that is all I can think of at the moment, I'm sure there is more. I should be more prepared. Thanks again for all everybody's help.

You can go over to the DVC board; there is a board for rental points.

If you stay on points, (whether you are a member or using a member's points, you only get mousekeeping on the fourth day. The only way you get every day is if you are on cash stay or you got into a DVC under one of the promotions, like I did two years ago on the 4/3 deal.

I am a huge fan of renting points, which I do once or twice a year. If you can't find anyone on the rent/trade board, you may consider looking into a points broker (there's one who advertises here). I prefer going through individual owners, but only because the brokers charge more. For some people, the safety of using a broker makes it worth it. They'll also make your ADRs, etc. If you use a broker, you can pay with a credit card as well.

I usually find the owners I work with will take checks, but it's not a huge hassle to set up a paypal account.

You'll get housekeeping on Wednesdays but you can pay extra and get it more often.

Good luck. If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me.

Paypal is easy to set up and how you pay will be something you work out with the owner who you choose to rent you the reservation.

And yes, DVC points reservations have limited mousekeeping. If you stay 7 nights or less, you will get trash and towel on day 4, with check in being day 1. If you want extra towels, you can pay for them--its like $6 for an extra 4 pack--not bad. If you are in a 1 bedroom or larger, you can just wash them.

If you stay 8 nights or more, then you get a cleaning on day 4 and trash and towel on day 7.

If you head over to the DVC boards, there are stickys that will explain all the details. The biggest pro is that you can save money. The biggest drawbacks, IMO, are that the cancellation policies are much more rigid, if there even is one, you usually have to pay way in advance, and the reservation remains in control of the owner so a lot of trust is needed.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for all of your help. I will keep looking on the rent/trade board to see if there is somethign that catches my eye. I will also look into the broker option. Oh, I'm guessing I need to bring my own laundry soap? See how clueless I am? Good thing for the DIS Boards!! :worship:

Villas will come with one starter box of detergent. On the mousekeeping days, you will get it replaced.

We brought those 3-1 sheets from Purex last year--they worked out great!

I have been renting for 10 years now. Most of the people I rent from prefer personal check but have used paypal a couple of time. I always rent from an individual because I can get a cheaper per point price but there are also point brokers that can help you. I PM's you the info on how I rent.

Go to the Rent/Trade Board and read the sticky threads at the top of the page. You will need to look over the posts for "points for rent". When you find one for the resort you want, contact that member and ask them about making a reservation for you using their points.

This is all between you and them; Disney isn't involved in any way.

Hopefully, you are not looking for anything until after mid-January. Most members book their trips 7 to 11 months out, so availability is not very good for anything before mid-January. What you see available on the Disney website is not what is available for a points stay, so you'll just have to ask the member to check for you. They can only do this by calling Member Services.

HI,

i rented points for our Nov 10 WDW vacation.

First you will need to decide where you want Disney Villa Resort you want to stay at.

Bay Lake Towers
Beach Club Villas
Wilderness Logde Villas
Animal Kindom Villas - Kindani
Boardwalk Villas
Old Key West
Saratoga Springs.

Second you will need to decide the dates you want to travel and how many nights you would like to stay.

Most people try to make reservations to stay at a DVC villa 7 to 11 months before they travel inorder to find availabiity. I booked at 7 months out. A DVC owner can rent points at his home resort (the resort he owns at) 11 months out and rent at all other DVC Villas 7 months out.

I looked on the rent and trade boards each day at the posts on the rent and trade board until I found someone who was renting around the amount of points i needed and in the use year that i needed for the reservation (I determined this by using the points calculator here on the disboards -located on home page of disboards in DVC section middle of page. Points are required to be used within the use year of the contract). Once I found someone who had the available points i needed i contacted this person through personal message here on disboard and then through email. The DVC owner will be able to tell if your reservation is within the time frame of his/her use year.

Please note that you will not be able to call Disney directly about your reservation, only the DVC owner can do this. You will get cleaning and towel service on the fourth day of your reservation. We paid daily for towel service but were happy with only having cleaning service once. Also, most DVC owners require 50 percent downpayment at time of confirmation and the balance being due 45 day prior to reservation. Also, some will not allow cancellation. I was able to cancel prior to 30 days out, if needed. I believe DVC owners do this because they can only change reservations prior to 30 days out without being penalized for the points.

I made sure also that the person i was renting from had been a member of the disboards for a few years, had a high post count including prior rent posts, i checked owner references and the orange county website for a property deed in the name of the owner. Also, make sure that you get all contact information. Do not send money until you receive confirmation number with a promise to receive written confirmation from Disney in the mail. Paypal is the method i used to pay the owner. I set up a paypal account and it took two to three days to get the account setup with withdrawal from my bankaccount. You will send a payment to the owners email address for the amount of the reservation.

My experience with renting points was great. WDW treated treated my family as if we were dvc owners when we arrived at our resort. We stayed at BCV. I fell in love but my DD loved AKV most. We stayed their on a 40 percent off room reservation the year before. Renting points at 10 dollars a point was less expensive though.

Also dvcrequest.com rents points for about $13.00 a point. But you have to pay in full upfront. I have never used them but if i decide to try in the future i plan to only state the specific resort that i want to stay in as an option with no 2nd and 3rd choices.

Purex laundry sheets are the best! They pack flat in your suitcase. I've found for the stackable washer I cut the laundry sheet in half length wise before I leave home and put them in a ziplock bag. The loads are usually really small on vacation and half a sheet is perfect for the little washer. We also bring the little dishwasher tablets for the dishwasher.

Oh, I'm guessing I need to bring my own laundry soap?

i may have missed this but if you are staying in a studio, you would have free access to a laundry room in the resort but would need to bring your own laundry soap/fabric softeners.

if you are staying in a 1BR or larger, you would have a washer/dryer in the villa and a starter pack of laundry soap is provided (as already stated).

Don't be afraid to rent points...just do your homework. Have a contract and use a reputable renter. Just wanted to say I rented points for the first time this past weekend. I just needed one night and was able to do this for a Lakeview room at Bay lake Towers. Perfect room, North Tower, Seventh Floor, Fantastic view of wishes from my balcony.

Poster that I rented from had references, used PayPal and I was able to book Magical Express for me. Couldn't have been any easier. I think I ended up paying about 1/2 what I would have paid via resort reservations for the BLT for one night. It was a great way for me to try out the resort too. And I know the DVC member was appreciative in not losing points too. So it was a win/win for both of us.

Pool party was a lot of fun and I didn't even have my 3 children with me. This was a one-day Personal time extension for me from a week of work so it was a nice way to end the week. The lifeguards and counselors did a great job of interracting with all the children. I know parents would have felt safe sunning without having to constantly check on the little ones. Everyone was having a great time.

Studio had plenty of room. The couch was even a fold out and could have easily slept two of my young children. Kitchen area/pantry were nice. Very nice!

I think The Time Share Store might be a good choice. I've already contacted them about renting points, and they were more than helpful. Just click on one of their banners on Disboards.

The Time Share store sells DVC they don't rent.

Hmmmmm - there's nothing on the Time Share store's website. How did you or do you find out about it? :confused3
