Renting DVC points for BLT and paying on a monthly basis..Is it do able?

Thanks everyone for the replys! :)

DH and I have talked about it and we are going to go with a cash reservation. It always scares me getting to Disney, motel, etc and not having a room. I think that would be made worse if we rented points.
Plus he wasn't to thrilled about not getting housekeeping every day if we renting points.:confused3 Don't understand why he cared about that for when he doesn't do any of the cleaning at home.

With our trip being over a year away, we will have a good lump sum saved up.

Thanks again!!

You can pay for extra housekeeping when staying on points.

I told DH that and he said as much as DVC members have to pay for DVC why should they have to pay extra for cleaning. He thinks if you invest that much money into something, the room cleaning should be included. None of this, on day such and such you get this type of cleaning.

It's a timeshare. That's how most timeshares work. Many of them make you swap out your sheets and towels yourself and they don't come to the room to do it like DVC does. They could give members daily full cleaning, but we'd pay for it. Most members really like not having anyone coming into the villa except for every four days.

Does he understand the difference in price between paying cash for a villa versus renting points? You are talking about a difference that is most likely thousands of dollars. And he doesn't want to do it partly because he can't get housekeeping everyday? You can pay for housekeeping daily and still save thousands by renting points instead of paying cash.

Again I would like to thank everyone for replying!

Maybe I need to take things in my own hands and look into the points. Since I'm new to the whole "renting points" I need all the advice I can get.

Here's the details of our trip next year. Our dates are check in 11/16/2012 and checking out 11/23. According to the DVC points calculator we need 402 points for our entire stay. By some of the replys finding 402 points from just one owner is going to be a tough job. If points are bought from say two DVC members how are those points applied to one reservation?

Since it seems making payments is non heard of I like the idea of 50% down and then the other 50% closer to the trip. If I have read things correctly if the BLT is a owners home resort they can book earlier then if it wasn't. Is this right and how much earlier can they book over a non home resort? I also don't want to pay over $10 a point, cheaper would be nice. I have looked on the DVC board and that seems to be the running rate per point. Can I assume I can get points for that price?

I'm sorry for all the questions, but the points system and how it works really blows my mind. I want to save some money, but also don't want to get scammed in the process. Arrive at Disney and have no room what so ever.

This is going to be our last trip as a family of 5 since our oldest will be 16 at the time of this trip. So I want to go HUGE, something he will never forget. ;)

You'd be lucky to find it for $10 a point let alone less. The avg. is $12 from what I have seen.

The going rate is actually $10 for the most part, although many owners would like it higher. Prices were trending up on the DIS Rent/Trade boards for a while, but I think it has leveled back off towards $10. Cheaper than $10 would be exceptionally unlikely unless someone has distressed points that are expiring soon. Since you want to (and should) book well in advance, that would be unlikely for you.

You can rent from DIS Board sponsor David as well, but that will cost you $13, but some people are more comfortable dealing with his company (he is a broker) than an individual.

There is an FAQ on the DIS DVC Rent/Trade board that you should read (can't remember if your original post said you did that or not).

I was thinking it was higher. My apologies.

I am not a DVC member and am in the process of renting points for my first time (check in 6/1). But here are some notes...

1) I would take out the check in/out days listed in your post. A moderator might read that as an attempt to solicit rental points which aren't allowed on the Dis.
2) I don't know of a simple way to get points from two owners for your one reservation. I guess it is theoretically possible for owner #1 to transfer points to owner #2 and #2 making all the reservations, but that sounds very problematic.
3) Owners with BLT as their "home" resort can make a booking 11 months out from checkin. Owners with other properties as their home resort can book BLT at 7 months. Since you're looking for a November 2012 trip, that can't be booked until December of this year.
4) Being scammed IS possible. There are tips on the DVC threads on steps you can take to help prevent being scammed, but there is no "guarantee".
5) Once you come to an agreement with an owner to rent their points, THEY make the reservation (often with you on a conference call, but not necessarily). They should give you a confirmation number. However, THEY control the reservation up until you checkin. YOU can not make ANY changes (adding dining plan, ME, room requests, etc) on your own. It all needs to go through the member.

Hope this helps.

Only reason I included my dates was to see if anyone came back saying those dates are going to be hard to get with points. If that was the case I would just go ahead with my original plan and do a cash reservation.

Just wish I knew someone IRL that had points. That would make things so much easier.

Is that the week of Thanksgiving? If so, you are going to need a BLT owner to book what you want (I'm assuming its a 2 bedroom theme park view just by a quick look at the points chart?) at exactly 11 months out. Those book up pretty much exactly at the 11 month mark and that might even be difficult to get if it is Thanksgiving week. I'm not even sure you would be able to get a cash reservation for that.

Like another poster said, the going rate is $10 per point, but it can be more (especially for BLT).

You could see if you could find two owners and do two separate reservations?

Have you thought about just getting two CR theme park view rooms?

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Why not go ahead and do a cash reservation and if you find someone to rent points from, cancel the cash reservation. You have until 45(?) days before check in to cancel I believe.

Both times we rented it was just like this. We paid 50% down when the reservation was confirmed, and then we paid the additional 50% at the 60 day mark.
I have rented out my points and that's how I did it on rentals that were made far in advance. For ones that were closer, I just asked 100%. Of course, the OP is free try to negotiate whatever terms she can. You don't know until you ask and it might work out for her. Personally, I was perfectly happen to split the payment in two but I think I would be annoyed with monthly payments and I certainly would need all my $$ by 45-60 days prior to the reservation. We DVC owners are penalized if we cancel within 31 days of the reservation and the full 60 days gives enough wiggle time for a slow paying renter to get their check to me in time.

Oh, and the going rate has gone up to $11-12 per point. Especially for BLT and especially when you are booking BLT within the 11-to-7 month exclusive window. It's been a really long time since I rented for only $10 per point.

ETA: You can contact David over at DVC By Request: http://www.dvcrequest.com/default.asp. He does charge $13 per point and he expects full payment but he is almost sure to have access to the over 400 points you'll need.

Yes, that is Thanksgiving week. As of right now the TA I have worked with in the past at Dreams Unlimited has my dates and such and when it's possiable to book our dates at BLT she is going to book us as a cash reservation. Fingers crossed she can. But at our 500 day mark from our check in, she said we could make a reservation for a regular resort and suggested we do that so to have our name in the Disney reservation system. As of right now, that is the plan.

The most points I have seen up for rent is 400 and I do believe that was for a different DVC resort, not the BLT.

I wish DH wasn't so picky and for the friday and saturday we arrive would stay say at the family suites and then switch over to the BLT on sunday. That way it would cut down on points and might make it easier to find some.

Have to wait and see how things work out.

Good luck with whatever you decide!
Thank you ! :)

When we rented our points, I asked for full payment within 10 days following making the reservation. I stipulated that the payment was non-refundable. Renter did not have a problem with this. I did later work with the renter because they wanted to move dates around. Remember, when renting you are dealing with a person, not Disney.

This was my exact experience as well when I rented points. And, I paid $12 per point. The $10pp are definitely dwindling.

I have rented point several times from DVC owners and although I have never proposed a monthly system, I insist upon 1/2 down at con firmed reservation and balance at 45 days. So, if you plan 11 months out to get the prime slots with DVC, just have 1/2 the lodging cost available (you'll still have transportation and food to pay for later, and then pay the balance when it comes, saving every month to get there.

I'm not so sure about that. I've never had a problem getting $10/pt (or less)

Maybe it is a supply and demand? I was specifically looking at BCV. I know SS and OKW have many more units so maybe they are easey to find at 10$pp??

The changes to the Rent/Trade Board dried up the low-ball posters who were only on the DIS to rent/dump their points for $10 so the price has edged up.
