I am considering renting points from a dvc owner, but I want to know what is stopping the owner from canceling the reservation after the points have been rented.

Im just curious as to how this whole process works. I suppose that the person paying for the points can ask for a reservation confirmation number before transfering the money? to be sure that they are getting what they are paying for? As I understand it, the DVC owner keeps control of the reservation. What would keep the owner from canceling the reservation and keeping the money?

Thanks in advance.

Well, of course there is some level of trust here. ;) But, we are all Disney-loving, kid-at-heart kinda people here. I highly doubt that someone who has made a financial investment to DVC and Disney would then turn around and do something like that.

If you are still uncomfortable, I have heard of people asking for references of past transactions that the member has done. If this is the 1st transaction for this member...than maybe you would feel more comforable renting from someone who has done it before. Others have drawn up contracts.

Also remember...the DVC member is also taking a risk! They are booking a vacation under their name for a complete stranger. Any unreconciled bills or damage to the hotel will be directed back to them!

Overall, it may not be a transaction that you are comfortable making. But...I really think in the long run, you will be fine. :thumbsup2

FYI, the owner has much to lose too. Not all of the trust must be on the part of the renter, but also on the part of the owner. There have been hundreds of people who rent over on the rent trade board, and to my knowledge there have been many more reports of renters stiffing owners than the other way around.

I have rented and it was very nervewracking. I rented a 2 night studio stay the first time and everything went fine. The second time, I bumped it up to a 5 night one bedroom with the same member b/c the first reservation went off without a hitch. You might want to consider starting small and working your way up if you find a member with a lot of points who is willing to rent. I think members are also more comfortable renting to repeat customers. Still, it is an act of trust on both sides - we just aren't used to these kinds of "let's shake on it" deals in this day and age!

I have rented twice both times from members I did not know nor did they know me. Both worked out great for me. Now I just purchased a small resale contract so I can book my own stays.

But trust you must on both sides.
