Rent DVC Points or Pay Resort Prices?

This is where it gets a bit confusing to me. To rent Disney Vacation Points, it's about $10 a point.

I put some numbers in the points calculator: http://www.wdwinfo.com/resort/dvcpoint.cfm

For 7 days at Port Orleans from 4/1-4/8/04 (sorry no 2005 calendar), it came up to 215 points. This is water view. At $10 a point, you'd pay $2,105.

If we just made a reservation at Disney through disneyworld.com, a similar reservation would be:

$194 a night x 7 nights= $1358 (without any discount)

What am I missing?

When you rent points, you generally do it for one of the DVC resorts (Old Key West, Boardwalk Villas, Beach Club Villas, Villas at Wildnerness Lodge). While DVC members can use their points for a non-DVC resort, it doesn't seem to be cost effective. Just as an example, I checked on May 1 - May 8 in a Studio at OKW and it requires 98 points which would be $980. Also, to keep the cost down, many people do not stay at the DVC resorts on Friday or Saturday as the point requirement is so much higher.

Renting points is a great value when using the DVC resorts. Ive stayed at Boardwalk villa's twice for around $100/night. Rack rates would have run about $300/night.

I wouldn't use my DVC points at another Disney Resort because I can usually get a get discount code for them...but when you use them at a DVC resort they would save quite alot over Rack Rates as the Villas are seldom discounted.

These are also Deluxe accommodations:

One Bedroom BWV (Sunday-Thursday) May (Preferred View)=28 points rented from DVC Member=$280.00 a night no tax.

One Bedroom BWV May thur CRO =$435.0+tax

Studio BWV (Sunday-Thursday) May (Preferred View)=13 points rented from DVC Member=$130.00 a night NO tax.

Studio BWV May thur CRO=$329.00+tax.

Just as a sidenote, Paladin is absolutely right about Friday and Saturday. Try using the calculator for a DVC resort for the week excluding friday and Saturday and you'll see what a bargain it is.

What I do is visit (stay) at other Resorts with a good discount code on Friday and Saturday then start my DVC reservation from Sunday-Thursday. If I'm staying over at one of the EPCOT Resorts throgh DVC I'll stay Friday & Saturday at a MK Resort or even a Value Resort to save money I don't mind the Values at all because I know I'll be at a Deluxe Resort for the rest of the stay.

Actually I love staying at Values on short trips too, because I'm at DisneyWorld. So it's either Deluxe or Value for me.

You aren't missing anything. Renting DVC points to stay at non-DVC resorts is not a good deal. Prior to 2002 it often was; it fact it used to be recommended on mousesavers.com. You may have run into some outdated information that still suggests it.

In 2002 there was a major increase in the number of points required to stay at non-DVC resorts, and it no longer makes sense.

Having just rented points to stay at the boardwalk Villas for a week we won't do it any other way again. We have stayed at Port Orleans andCarribean Beach prior to this and found the value so much better renting points and being able to stay at the Boardwalk. The ammenties were endless. To us, there is no better value besides actually owning. I would highly recommend looking into renting points. I think it is the best way to get the most bang for your buck

I know that is this an old thread, but I have been looking up what goes into renting points.

I have read that it isn't a good idea to rent points for Friday and Saturday cause they are doubled. My family isn't looking to go back to WDW until 2007, but I thought I would try and learn as much as I can and understand how this works while waiting.

We are looking at going for 10 days, so that would be 9 nights. I used the 2004 year in the calculator to see what would come up for Oct 4 - Oct 13, which includes a Friday and Saturday.

Since it's only 2 nights that we are going to have the double points, tell me it would be stupid to pack everyone up for 2 nights to stay at a value resort and then head back to where we were on a Sunday to use the remaining points that we rented.

We are looking at the Saratoga Springs resort/ one bedroom. If I did it right, I figured out how much it would be if we just did a room only without the points and it came up to $395/night {2004} which is $3555 just for our stay, in theroy. If I figured the points out right we would need to rent 238 points {if we were going in 2004} and at $10 a point, it came out to $2380, a savings of $1175

Please reassure me this is the way to go. My DH is all excited if we could stay at a place like this and save that kind of money.

The dates that we have picked for our trip is Oct 1 - Oct 10 2007.
Is that a popular time for DVC members to be going? Or is that a good time to rent points {avaliablety?}

As a DVC owner, I have to agree that once you have stayed in a one-bedroom or greater it is tough to go back.

Your math is correct and although many DVC members stay in other hotels on Friday and Saturday, I don't think it is worth the hassle in the middle of a trip.

If you are arriving on a Friday or Saturday, you may save money getting a good rate at a Mod or Deluxe and moving to the DVC resort on Sunday.

You will save money compared to the "rack rates" of a DVC hotel by renting points. Depending on the type of room you would like, you may also find a good discount by having an annual pass or something else. DVC resorts are not also included in the "Room Discounts", since the members have first shot at reserving the room.

October can be a busy month for DVC resorts. It seems that DVC members often visit during less busy times to avoid the large crowds.

I second the idea about not changing resorts midweek. It definitely takes more points to stay Friday and Saturday but it is absolutely worth it to suck it up and stay in one place.

Or you could purchase your own DVC points with the $2380 as the down payment. Then you could go as often as your points would allow - plus use any of the DVC resorts. Call a guide and see what it would cost you to buy into DVC now before the price goes up again. Plus there are some prepurchase incentives for buying now at SSR before the building points that you would be purchased is available for you to occupy.
