Religious Celebrations

No religious affiliation or celebration for us, but we do send out some holiday (not Christmas) "thinking of you" gifts as we have family and friends of different faiths.

I don't celebrate the religious aspects of any holiday such as Easter and Christmas, but I do celebrate the secular parts of them. I don't go to church at Christmas time or Easter as it just wouldn't make sense for me to do so.

Hardcore Jesus freaks here, so we celebrate the birth of Jesus. However, like someone else said, Easter is more important. We'll do church on Christmas Eve to celebrate!!!

Of course we celebrate Christmas - it's the 2nd most important event in the history of the world by our reckoning. If we wouldn't celebrate this "glad tiding" with all the zeal we can muster, really, what would we? We celebrate at home, at our workplaces and in the homes of our friends and family. We decorate, we cook and bake (and generally eat ourselves stupid), we send cards, we exchange gifts, we attend concerts and other seasonal shows, we do special volunteer work and give charitable donations and we attend a number of very specifically-focussed services at our own church and often visit other churches as well. (And before anybody asks, yes, of course we know Jesus was not born on December 25).

I am a practicing Christian. I attend church weekly, so yes, Christmas is about Jesus, not Santa. Easter is bigger in importance, but Christmas is special in its own way. Yes, I will be at church on Christmas Eve, and actually probably twice because I will take my Mom at noon from the nursing home.

We go to church on a regular basis however rarely go at Christmas.Usually we see one side of the family on CE and the other on CD so we are busy with family.

Yes, we go to Mass every Christmas Eve (and most Sundays in general).

As Christians we primarily celebrate Christmas as the birth of Jesus Christ, but we also enjoy the non religious aspects of the holiday as well. Our most important celebration is of course Easter.

I celebrate Santa Claus at Christmas and was told I'm going to hell for it by someone here on the DIS. Can you believe that?

Yes, I believe you were told that. No need to tell it to me. I already KNOW I'm going to hell; I've known it for years.

I love holidays, but in a purely secular way. Haven't been to church in 20 years, since my mom could drag me.

I stopped attending church freshman year of college, and my parents quit soon after. Even as a kid I could tell they attended because of a sense of duty or obligation, not because they received any spiritual benefit. They didn't like the new monsignor of the parish, so they stopped pretending. It's been over 30 years for me, except for weddings and funerals.

I celebrate my faith all year. In fact, Easter is more important. But only slightly.

I was taught in Catholic school that Easter is MUCH more important in matters of liturgy and doctrine. But very few parishioners seemed to agree; Christmas was always the bigger celebration.

I chalked it up that Santa was more popular than the Easter Bunny, so apparently the same applied to Holy Days.

I have bad asthma and it is difficult to attend church/symphony/plays etc. because of all the perfume and cologne. I do love the season and celebrating but usually watch the services on the web.

When I lived in DC I was able to attend services at the National Cathedral and now enjoy the festivities on webcast if I am off work.

I will be honest. We are Christian. We typically stay away from church on Christmas because it is so crowded! We go the rest of the year without fail (we volunteer at church so we need to be there), but for the special days, like C and E, we often either skip or volunteer with the nursery. We hate fighting for a seat, and it makes more sense to give it to those visiting.

We celebrate Christmas but do not attend church.

I must say, even if I did NOT believe, I'd still go simply because the service is so beautiful. Gorgeously infectious song, incense, candlelight, cheer in general! And it's so nice to see so many people at the dead of night brought together just to celebrate

I am a Christian, but don't go to church at Christmas. We used to go every Christmas Eve - when we were kids we were pretty heavily involved in the Nativity-type concert in the evening and when we were a bit older we went to the service that ended just after midnight. Plus, my school would have a carol service in late November/early December that, as a chorister, I always attended. However, our Minister who was the reason we started going to that particular church (he had a good balance of modern and traditional) left a few years ago and we really aren't keen on the new Minister. On Christmas Eve we now go to a huge televised outdoor Christmas concert which is fantastic. Christmas day is then at my aunt's beach house so we rush to visit my 94 year old grandfather in aged care, then go down to the beach so unfortunately don't have time for church in the morning (and the church down there doesn't have a later service).

Been spending Christmas Eve at my little country childhood church EVERY one of my 64 years. Especially important to me now to have my daughters and their families join us. My Daddy has been gone for 34 years and I can still "hear" him singing Silent Night. Love this picture from last night, DGD singing with a friend of ours from Thailand who has "officially" joined our Lutheran faith while attending graduate school at Texas A&M.

Christmas is Santa/spending time with family and Easter is the Easter Bunny in our household. I haven't stepped in a church for years and have no desire to. My daughter ocassionally will go to church with one of her friends, which is fine, but I won't be the one taking her.
