Religion.

Okay, but it sounds like if it doesn't come from the bible, you don't believe it.

Pretty much..

Really?
So even if it's been proved a million times, if it's not in the bible, you still don't believe it?
I'm pretty sure President Bush isn't in the bible, so do you believe he's the President of The United States?

1. Depending on what you're talking about. Not every single detail.
2. Yes, I know he's president, even if its not in the Bible. I've seen it, and I believe it. I don't go to the extreme. I mean like evolution, the Big Bang, etc.

I didn't mean skim. Better clarification above.
I didn't mean to be snippy and I was going to apologize for this comment. I was just preoccupied with other things. But that is still no excuse to be rude. I really am sorry if that offended you Nomi.
No worries, you didn’t offend me at all. I’ve had much, much worse on other forums (they were debate forums though, so I’m all used to it and stuff.)

Well, I read it in the footnotes of one of my Bibles. So, if you don't find that a credible source then that's fine.
No, I don’t really consider the bible to be a source for anything other than religious studies, not science and only history in the sense that it was part of history (not a source of history).
Well, I do belive in adaptation. And there are roughly 1-2 million named species NOW. But over 2,000 years ago at the beginnining of time there may not have been that many. I don't think there were that many either. I think God knew what he was doing. That's why he gave Noah specific instructions on how to build the boat.
Well, only 2000 is a very, very short time in evolutionary terms. In fact, the biodiversity was greater 2000 years ago (animals going extinct and all that). Plus, the beginning of time was billions of years ago, not 2000. Heck, even the human species as we know it has been around some ten thousand years.
There's no evidence for a lot of stuff. There'd be no evidence you were living in 100 years if people didn't write stuff down or take pictures. People would just have to rely on the stories that were passed down about you.
But there would be evidence, in the form of records (birth records, dental records, ect), bones, ect. But in reference to a flood, it isn’t the same as a person. It would have been a significant global event, with geographical evidence. Of which there is none.
Yeah. The street Bible is pretty funny if you ask me. I 'assume' that my Bible is His word because of my faith. Again. It's a faith thing.
Thats fine, I guess. It’s just for me blind faith is a harmful and dangerous thing.
No. I never denounced what you've written as being not true. I've read through all of it. And understood what I could. But, I didn't do hardcore research on the words I didn't know. I just used context clues or skipped over them. And I actually agreed with some of it. Like the thing about love and etc.
Ah, gotcha. No worries.
I'm sorry. I didn't mean to fight. And i'm sorry if I sound like i'm fighting.
It just feels like i'm fighting a battle by myself here with everyone against me.
Which is fine. Just hard.
No worries, I understand. It’s a debate, and though things can get a little heated, but that is just sort of the nature of debate.
But really? It seems to me that this boards is overwhelmingly religious.

Who is the oldest person in the Bible? (Watched QI and it asked that question. Never knew Moses lived to be 950 years old O_o. Though there's people older then him...)

Do you believe the Lost Gospels? I think in the Gospel of Judas, he describes Jesus as being a regular guy...

The earliest record of Jesus being mentioned in some form of text, I believe, was in 72-79 AD.

I read some Bible when at an Alpha Course and it made me laugh at how simple Jesus made everything seem. He healed everyone by touching them... The thing that made me laugh was some part where Jesus visits Peter's Mother in Law but she has a fever and is in bed. So he touches her, the fever leaves her, and she gets up and makes them dinner :p

a) Everyone here should go read "Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal" by Christopher Moore. Great read.

b) So glad that I don't have to take a stance in this debate.

c) What was I gonna say...

d) I LEAVE FOR TWO DAYs AND THERE'S ALL OF A SUDDEN 12 MORE PAGES!!!!! WTH?

e) I love the ideas of Douglas Adams. How Dophins are really the smartest things on earth and how they control whether they want to evolve or not. And that we're too stupid and caught up in our own messes to realize it. Srsly, go read "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".

Well ya know how you have faith in religion?
We have faith in science.

Tell that to Mr.Judgmental..
How is it sad that I believe in my own thing.
Besides the previous reply, I haven't said it was sad on anyone's beliefs..

Its really sad how you believe all of what scientist say.. THAT'S really sad..

Um, no, we don't 'just' beleive what scientists say. For something to be accepted by science, it has to have mounds of evidence and proof, and then has to be reveiwed by MANY scientists. If any scientist just 'said' anything they would be laughed out of the scientific feild. They need to back it up, and the evidence for it is available to the public to reveiw as well.

Idk about this conversation, but

I'm roman catholic and proud to be it

Katie, I'm really not trying to offend you here I'm just genuinely curious.
In school, when you learn about evolution and the Big Bang and whatnot, what do you view it as? Like, just a scientific theory to explain things for non-believers? And do you get upset that it's mandatory to teach it?
Like I said, I'm really not trying to be offensive, I was just honestly curious.

Also, Mr. Gabriel, it doesn't have to be so black and white.
I believe in a God out there, somewhere. But just as much as I believe in a higher being, I can believe in science, too.

Science and religion can work together, if you open your mind and let them.

Tell that to Mr.Judgmental..

It's sad because you said you're blindly ignoring something that is proven fact.

I chose not to believe in science.
Because of my religion, and my own beliefs..
I know it can work together, but I chose not to. For my own reasons,,

Ignoring what?
The scienctific facts and whatnot.
They might be proven true, but in thier opinion it maybe, but not to me..

i guess what i just don't understand is why so many people care about the historical accuracy of the bible instead of analyzing the stories themselves...why must the bible be taken so literally when there are so many scientific facts that disprove it's factuality? people should really stop obsessing over the creation story and instead look for a meaning.

what motivated eve to eat from the tree?
-instead of what kind of tree it was and if eve was really a person.

If you're talking about me, I am a female, thank you very much.

And that is very, very, well I won't say it 'cause I'll get banned =].
