My son was going on a school trip to Italy so I bought him a travel backpack and money belt from REI. The money belt was REI brand. The next day I was at a luggage store and bought a couple other travel wallet options. My son liked both the items bought at the luggage store and decided against the backpack so I planned to return the whole REI purchase.
When I made the REI return, I accidentally returned the travel wallet from the luggage store to REI instead of the REI money belt. I found the money belt at home the day after the return and realized my mistake.
How should I present this to the store when I try to return the money belt (that has technically already been returned)? Obviously the salesperson just let it go since it could not have scanned correctly-- it even had a price sticker from the other store that was different from the receipt. I don't even know if they carry the other brand.
(I initially thought it would be easiest to just return the item without a receipt and just rebuy the money wallet my son wants, but I found out that REI will not take back anything without a receipt or member account lookup.)
