I have a free pass for this that I am planning on using soon. I have never been in one and have a quick question.

My question is - is it rude to bring outside food in? I am going to be there for about a 3 hour layover which happens to be right during the lunch hour.

Thanks!

You aren't allowed to bring outside food in. They do serve lunch. Menu items vary by location, but it is typically a variety of sandwiches and salads.

Not always - this is often only offered in international clubs. I have been in domestic clubs where they only have things like bags of chips and apples and no free booze!

It's true that you cannot bring in your own food and drink.

No, it is not often only in international clubs. There are a few smaller out-station clubs with no kitchens, but it is pretty universal to serve food. A club that doesn't serve food is the exception, not the rule. The food isn't free, of course. Only American Airlines Flagship Lounge and United's First Lounges have free selection of foods that make a meal.

All the airlines offer free liquor at their clubs now. American and United were the only hold-outs, but went free last year.

The RCC is pretty sparse, but you can usually find enough to tide you over till your flight. In the afternoon there is usually cheese, crackers, trail mix, cookies and sometimes they have carrots/celery with ranch dips cups. Even though there are tongs at all the food I have frequently seen people grab with their bare hand which pretty much turns me off from eating anything that isn't prepackaged.

The free alcoholic beverages are well liquors, draft bud light and some seriously bad red and white wine. You can pay for the good stuff, but if you want the good stuff you are better off going to one of the many restaurants on the concourse and just ordering a decent drink and having a relaxing meal with it since food seems to be a priority.

My main use for the RCC is free internet and CLEAN bathrooms. I figure a lot less people trek thru the RCC and there always seems to be someone checking the restrooms for cleanliness.

Depending on what time your flight is it very well may be absolutely chaotic in the lounge. ORD and IAD are notoriously busy from 3pm-7pm when all the international flights are departing. Any passenger in international business may access the lounge so you very well may be in a packed lounge which is anything but relaxing.

The lounges are just okay and since you are just using a freebie cert then go ahead and use it. My company pays for my membership but I frankly wouldn't bother if they didn't pay. Many times I just head to Vino Volo at IAD for a good glass of wine and cheese plate verses schlepping to the lounge.

Thanks everyone. I guess since I have a free pass I will try it out and see what I think. Hope it isnt too busy since I would really like to catch up on my email in peace!

You don't mention if you are traveling with your family, but I do know the are stricter about making you follow the letter of the law on the coupons. RCC members can bring in their entire family and can access regardless of the ticket you are holding. Just read the back and verify that you meet all the entry requirements. For example if you are flying Delta but have an RCC coupon they may deny you entry if aren't flying United.

I didn't say domestic clubs don't serve food, just that in the regular Red Carpet clubs, the food is often sparse and not very good. In the First Class lounges (not what the OP asked about), the selection is better.

Even international lounges can be poor. I was recently in United's lounge at Schipol and the food selection was abysmal.
