As the title says I need to change my life style, and i thought I would turn to my **********. Anyone here in the same boat? Anyone here have some good reciepes for five meals a week, that would provide left overs for lunch at work.
What are you snaking on?
I meet with the dietician Monday and have already set up a work out schedule with the gym at work. Just need to stock the house with food and get on a regular diabetic meal schedule.

My DH was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic a little over 1 year ago. He is taking metformin and is watching his carbohydrate intake. He limits himself to 100 grams of carbohydrates a day. He has lost 80 pounds by watching his diet alone. We don't have alot of rice, pasta, breads or desserts in the house anymore. At first he said it was hard but now it is just part of his regular routine. Best wishes on getting control of the diabetes.

Upside, there are a ton of sugar free foods out there.
Downside, they have sugar substitutes which adversely affect your digestion. Some may work for you, eat with GREAT moderation.

Ditto that!

Also type 2 and one of my worst experiences was 'discovering' Russell Stovers Sugar Free chocolate. Being inexperienced thought 'well, a couple pieces of this can't be bad for me.' WRONG! Cleaned me right out!

OP, your plan sounds like a good one, being diagnosed type 2 is not the end of the world and if you stick to the plan you described you will be well on your way to reducing any symptoms or ill effects. I'm trying to lose enough wait to cut back on or eliminate my meds eventually.:thumbsup2

I was diagnosed with PCOS about a month ago...While I'm not diabetic, I'm on a low carb (and only the "good" carbs) and no/low sugar. I've lost 12 lbs in a month. DH has been really supportive and that has helped a lot.

It's really not that hard to find stuff to eat....it's over coming the cravings and having the wil power to eat the right stuff. :thumbsup2

DH was diagnosed with type 2 about 18 months ago. Unfortunately for us (especially me!) he had to stay home with me for about 6 months! He's an airline pilot and cannot fly until it's under control and FAA approves him back to work. The good part is that he started running 5 miles for 3-4 days per week. He also completely changed his diet to what the dietician said. He eats salads for dinner most nights. He ended up losing 65 pounds:) Now his numbers are really low and he feels great. I don't have recipes or suggestions since we're on salads. He takes Janumet, which has the metformin in it, and also januvia. Good luck with getting this under control and feeling better!

I'm not diabetic, but we try and eat really healthy in our house. I always try and make something on Sunday that I can split up into 5 lunches to take to work. That way, I have something to "heat and eat" at work and not get tempted to hit the snack machine or the cafeteria!
I don't have any specific recipes, but recommend hunting down a good soup cookbook. They tend to have more veggies and meat, and if it calls for pasta you can always leave it out, put in less, or make sure and use whole-wheat pasta. Soup recipes also tend to make a lot - so plenty of meals!
On that same note - Progresso has good "light" soups and also "low sodium" soups in a can for emergency pantry-grab situations.

I'm gonna take a stab here,,but I'd think that plenty of fresh fish would be good for you,:thumbsup2
Theres ALL KINDA fish and recipes out there.

The South Beach diet is an excellent diet for diabetics, despite its being originated by a cardiologist for his patients.

I was diagnosed 4 years ago. I took a very cavalier attitude about it because I had NO symptoms. Don't be like me!!!! I now have very painful neuropathy in my feet because I paid attention too late.

Test your blood sugar at least twice a day. Get some moderate exercise in for about 30 minutes each day. It doesn't have to be all at once. Exercise really drops your blood sugar. Test it for yourself & you'll see I'm right. Make sure your Dr. tests your A1C at least twice a year. Really, really, really watch your FATS!!! They are the true enemy of diabetics and not sugar. Sugar is basically in and out of your system fairly quick and doesn't have that much long term effect on your pancreas or blood sugar. FATS are there forever and can screw up your blood sugar like nothing else. You can have sugary snacks in limited amounts....like 2 Oreos a day. When I have a sweet craving I have a sugar free/lowfat yogurt with a 1/2 cup of cheerios. It really stops the cravings, and is good for you.

I find if I nibble on something healthy about every two hours I do just fine. Diabetes is very manageable and not troublesome at all if you just keep yourself focused on healthier choices in your diet.

The dietitian will show you the basics of diet planning for diabetes. It's very simple, and basically just common sense. If you are catching it early, you can possible reverse it through diet & exercise.

Good luck!!

Thanks guys for the support I know by changing my habits my life will be better!
I do like that this will force me to try new recipes and test my will power which in the last year has been on vacation. I brought some single serve yogurt and chees sticks for lunch, I can get fresh fruit at work for a quarter. So I can always count on that, we have a great trainer at the gym at work and she is so down with helping me !
I feel good about what's ahead and yes Frank there is lots o fish in my future!
The wife isn't to keen on fish but she needs to change her habits also.
I see lots of burgers bunless of coarse and salads and fish throw in some boneless chicken and I think this is doable.
Veggies are not a problem thank God the twins like em.
Frank what kinda fish can I ween into the diet for the wife she uses the old fish taste fishey line!?!?!

If you catch some crappie they are mild tasting. If you buy it haddock and talipia are mild, just don't give her any catfish. yuck

Well ....

DW father was a diabetic that died back in 1978 at age 60 and DW was diagnosed as having Type II diabetes about 8 years ago at around age 50. She spent almost 3 years going thru the oral medications and finally had to go the injectible route with a long term shot first thing in the A.M. with a shot before every meal and finally it's under control. She has to test 4 times a day and fought going this route for a long time, but now while a pain it's just something she has accepted and now it just a part of life and not a big thing anymore. I will only give you my and her thoughts on this and you have to follow the doctor's advice so here goes ....

1. You need to get into a decent exercise program since regardless of what you do you will gain like 20lbs or so and this is universal from everything we know and is just a fact of life for probably 95% of folks.

2. We are now basically a sugar free house except for my candy and her sugar free ones. With the Splenda this is not as bad as it sounds and being the non diabetic in the home it's not that bad, but does take some getting used to.

3. We eat normally, but just have to watch in balancing our meals. DW eats some of the sugar free I.C., peanut butter and pasta, even real butter etc., but just has to eat smaller portions. I'm and she is not convinced how nuts you have to go on the diet end, but in her case it was bad enough that normal oral medicines would not have done the job any way. She fought the injection route for about a year, but now is much happier with doing that and it's well under control.

4. In her case she has to eat about every 4 to 6 hours with a snack in the afternoon and can be a pain, but you just have to plan for this and in our case accept it.

I guess the biggest advise I can give is not to obsessive over it and go nuts, but learn to live with it and soldier thru since that is really in the end your only option and not let it run run life. Do what you have to do and don't look back, but forward.

Larry

I agree with Denise on the fish choices, :thumbsup2
I would also like to add cod fish and trout.

The fresher that you can get fish, the least fishy taste you'll have.

I know this will sound strange,,but if you soak fish fillets in milk for a couple hours in the frig, it will help to take the edge off the fishy taste .

The other thing you might find strange is , I kinda like that fishy taste myself.

It's funny that all this fish stuff that has been posted has absolutely nothing to do with the subject of this thread and shows the ignorance of those posting it as far as a diabetic goes. Fish is not an issue with Diabetics and makes me wonder why people post this junk in what I think was an honest question. It just goes to prove my issue with people wanting to post in a thread for no other reason to just post ... SO> SO "SO" SAD>

Larry:mad::mad:

I'm amazed that Born-2-Fished even posted here this thread since haven't the slighest idea of what diabetics face and are actually mocking those with this affliction IMHO.... again so so sad.

No disrespect intended Larry but the OP did ask for meal and recipe ideas and fish is actually a good choice for diabetics. A study published in the American Journal of Kidney Disease, showed that eating fish twice a week can help diabetics protect their kidneys from some of the negative effects of diabetes.

I don't think Born 2 Fish was mocking anyone, I think he was just trying to help the OP.

Larry, why, why, 'WHY' are you sooooooo against what Frank suggested? He wasn't trying to be funny at all. Fish is suggested for EVERYONE, not just diabetics, as an alternative to fatty beef. I don't know why you think we shouldn't eat it. My DH's physician and dietician both recommended fish and chicken instead of burgers, hotdogs, and steaks. Please explain what your issue is.

You can do it!!! I've been on a low cab and sugar free diet for 6 weeks now and I feel fantastic! Regular exercise and eating healthy will definitely help. My nutritionist (who is a registered dietician) also recommends fish and chicken along with lots of vegetables (no corn or peas, though...high in carbs). You may find that by eating low carb and sugar free and exercising daily, you could eventually get off your meds. Good luck!!!! :goodvibes

Actually Mr. Larry, diabetes runs in both our families. So, yes he does have the slightest idea.

According to cyberdiabetes.com, many doctors will recommend that proteins should provide 12% to 20% of the daily calories in a diabetic diet. The best source of protein is probably fish because of studies which have shown it to protect lab animals against insulin resistance. It has also been suggested that it reduces the risk of sudden death from heart-rhythm abnormalities. Fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, halibut and tuna are especially good.

Also, the NIH has noted that omega-3 fatty acids, either through supplements or as part of diet rich in fish, can reduce inflamation that leads to or exacerbates diabetes.

So it does seem that there are health benefits of a diet that includes several servings of fish weekly for diabetics...not to mention for the population as a whole.

Just don't catch those fish at the Fort...that would be a no-no.
