Recently diagnosed Type2 Diabetic

OP, I'm glad you're seeing the dietician. He or she will give you guidelines. Hopefully your sessions will include you stating favorite foods and the dietician preparing some meal plans including those foods. It's all about moderation and portion control. Your nutritionist will likely recommend a number of small meals or meals and snacks each day in order to keep your blood glucose within range.

What foods you eat in what combinations make a difference as well as the portion sizes. A carb alone will spike your blood glucose quicker than a carb with protein.

What's right for one person may not be right for another. Using your glucometer and testing your blood glucose before meals, an hour after, two hours after for a while will help you figure out which foods raise your blood glucose more than others. My diabetes educator recommended that I test at least twice a day, but I had plenty of test strips and tested more often at first. I've learned I can still go to Wendy's and have a burger on a bun when pressed for time. I learned I cannot also have French Fries with the burger at the same time because if I did that would be way too many carbs at one time for me, and my glucose would go through the roof. I have the side salad, no dressing.

I checked the local library for some cookbooks put out by the ADA when I was diagnosed. Happy experimenting!

I beg for your forgiveness. Obviously the American Diabetes Association is misinformed and doesn't have a clue! I m an idiot for listening to them and my physician and my dietician wife. None of them knows what they are talking about and I am a complete moron without any hope of redemption.

I am a physician who treats a large amount of diabetics. I can guarantee that the American Diabetic Association does NOT say that alcohol lowers blood sugar or that diabetics can have all the alcohol that that want. The maximum alcohol advised for diabetics is 2 servings per day for a male. Most alcoholic drinks are loaded with sugar. Alcohol also affects the liver which is usually compromised in diabetics already. Most diabetics have or will have elevated triglycerides which is also affected by alcohol. After hearing all of the potential problems associated with alcohol, most of my diabetic patients make the wise decision to avoid it except on special occassions.

Wow I go away for a day or two and this thing blows up!

No worries Frank , Dave ,Jenn and all the others who were trying to help !!!!!!

The dietician was full of paper info and rubber replicas of portions of food.
But she was very unhelpful and meals and and suggestions on what to fix! Lucky me my Dad is type 2
I was already aware of slot and had started implementing the right foods so really the only thing I got out of it was a free meter!
I took all your suggestions and went shopping, thanks everyone I will keep you updated
On a good note I have lost 5
Lbs already !!!

And I'm the Queen of the May. Read the link I posted. ADA does suggest that diabetics only drink in moderation, but they also warn about alcohol and hypoglycemia! And I never stated that diabetics can drink all they want to drink. And it's time for a beer!

I had the same experience with the dietitian I was sent to. She basically told me what I already knew. I got a free meter, too, so it wasn't a total waste. I've found if I follow the basic Weight Watcher's program, my sugar levels are well maintained. I like their "points" system because it does allow me to indulge once in awhile.

BTW.... I made a terrific apple crisp tonight using Splenda & Splenda Brown Sugar instead of the real stuff. I honestly could not tell that I didn't use real sugar. Because it's made with oatmeal, you get the added benefit of fiber!! Also - Fiber One Oatmeal & Chocolate bars are a good snack because of the fiber. Whenever I get a raging craving for sweets, those satisfy!!

I still want to know what I lost. Was it a prize? Was it box #3? Was it the horse's patooty? I really didn't know that I was playing in a contest in which I lost on everything. (Scott, you don't need to warn me or give me points, I really want to know!)

As far as Itch is concerned, I hope what I had to say was of some help. I know the stern tongue lashing I got from the Dr. has helped me and watching my father and late grandfather and great grandfather has not been easy. I wish you the best of luck and hopefully you can get things under control to the point where you don't need medication any longer.:thumbsup2

Pourable Splenda is great for baking. I make a apple pie & a cobbler using Splenda. I have served it at Thanksgiving & at first no one knew it was sugar-free. I started telling everyone because we have more diabetics in the family now. They also have brown sugar in splenda

I did the same for our household on Thanksgiving and everyone was quite surprised it was sugar-free. I took it a step further and topped it with sugar-free reduced fat ice cream :cool1: We called it out 'guilt-free' dessert. We even had sugar-free flavored coffee creamers for the coffee.

Thanksgiving is when I first tried my sugar-free apple pie too. Everybody loved it. I buy sugar-free, fat-free ice cream too. I have found sugar-free cool-whip too. I also make my sweet potatoe casserole sugar-free. DH doesn't eat a lot of desserts, but it's nice to know that he can have some when he wants to. I actually eat them too just to keep from too much sugar in my diet also. I only buy sugar free soda. Even my kids drink it when they drink soda. I sometimes buy the sugar-free cookies too but you really have to watch the carbs in them. Some have more than the regular kind

Before Splenda, it was really difficult to buy sugar free stuff that (1) tasted good, and (2) didn't create intestinal havoc. Today the only "altered" stuff I still find virtually unpalatable is low fat/no fat cheese other than provolone. I don't like reduced fat margarine, either. It doesn't melt! Actually, I stick with real butter and just keep close tabs on measuring it for my toast instead of slathering it on.

Had Tuna steaks and Brocolli last night made a lemon garlic drizzle it was sooo good ! I think this is going to build my culinary skills glad I like to cook!

Splenda has been wonderful for my diet. I absolutely love it.

Thought I would give ya'll an update
Things are well and as I had said changes were quit easy maybe my subconscience was more in control than I thought.
Diet has gone good have made the changes and have have actually lost 20 pounds from diet alone! We know eat 5 meals a week thats are within my guidlines and two the rest of the family likes (PASTA, and what not)
Started working out and have lost an additional 12, so my goal was to loose 40 but I have now rethunk it and want to lose 60 that will get me to my high school graduation wait of 180.
I have learned that somethings I do like don't raise my Glucose that much if I just keep an eye on my other intake.
One of the coolest things was I tested before and after eating 2 slices of pizza and then test another night after eating two slices and a Mich Ultra beer and my blood sugar was lower, good to know huh?
I am still on oral meds but the good news he did not see a need to increase them which at first he thought he might have to.
So in all I feel good about whats happened and look forward to the next year!
ITCH

:thumbsup2
Sounds like you have things well in control. Great job ! The weight loss is also a big help, wow. Kudos to you.

In what ways do you feel different ?

:thumbsup2 I think you are doing great & have a great attitude. Many new diabetics have such an emotional problem when first diagnosed, that it prevents them from seeing that it can be done. The exercise & weight loss are wonderful. That is such a key to good control. I have had patients that were on oral medication for their blood sugar. Once they got their weight under control, they no longer needed the medication. Some of these were even obese, but they had gastric bypass & were able to come off of their medication. Remember to check your sugar & carry glucose tablets for any emergency. Hypoglycemia can be dangerous causing falls or accidents. Once again, congrats!!
