OP, I'm glad you're seeing the dietician. He or she will give you guidelines. Hopefully your sessions will include you stating favorite foods and the dietician preparing some meal plans including those foods. It's all about moderation and portion control. Your nutritionist will likely recommend a number of small meals or meals and snacks each day in order to keep your blood glucose within range.
What foods you eat in what combinations make a difference as well as the portion sizes. A carb alone will spike your blood glucose quicker than a carb with protein.
What's right for one person may not be right for another. Using your glucometer and testing your blood glucose before meals, an hour after, two hours after for a while will help you figure out which foods raise your blood glucose more than others. My diabetes educator recommended that I test at least twice a day, but I had plenty of test strips and tested more often at first. I've learned I can still go to Wendy's and have a burger on a bun when pressed for time. I learned I cannot also have French Fries with the burger at the same time because if I did that would be way too many carbs at one time for me, and my glucose would go through the roof. I have the side salad, no dressing.
I checked the local library for some cookbooks put out by the ADA when I was diagnosed. Happy experimenting!

We called it out 'guilt-free' dessert. We even had sugar-free flavored coffee creamers for the coffee.
