Rebel Alliance Roll call

Hi everyone! I just wanted to introduce myself. I am Joy and I have been running for just a few months now. I ran in 2 races so far, both with my daughter, a 3rd grader. We did a 5K fun run and a 5 mile race. She came in second for the under 12 group in that race and got a nice trophy. So I can definitely get her to run more races with me, she liked winning.

The Princess 1/2 is my next race, I am SO excited about it, now that I believe I can finish it. And the week after that I will be running the Sarasota 1/2. I am not a fast runner at all, so right now my goal for both is only to cross the finish line.

I look forward to getting to know all of you!

Welcome everyone. It is going to take a bit to digest all the new names. At some point, I would like to edit the first post to include all the screen names, real names and locations. I would also like to set up a calander similar to BigVic has on the main thread for our team here. Today just isnt the day. Perhaps Monday. Anyway, again, welcome.

Today I went to the gym and did 2.3 miles on the mill and some chest.

:welcome: to the Rebels, Joy!

I love that you are racing with your daughter. What a great way to bond and stay in shape!

Wow, 1 half right after another - that's great! Your confidence is inspiring. I bet it is for your daughter as well.

Hope I get the chance to meet you during the Princess weekend!

Wow! Look how big our team is. I am loving this.

Cwnhokie: EEC sounds fun. If I were closer to the East Coast I would love to do all those races.

Gretchen: Sounds like you are really putting the miles in! I am primarily a walker myself. I did the C25K program this fall, and now I add some jogging to my walking. So now I call myself a wogger.

Andrea: The race is Palm Springs is my first for this year. I did the Disneyland Half last year, and a small 5K, but that is all my racing experience. I was really nervous about my first half. I had nightmares about not being prepared. But things went really well. I should be way more worried about this one, because I really am not ready. Oh well. I will learn how important preparation is.

Katie: Isn’t it nice to go home. I don’t travel for work anymore and I am glad for it.

Liam: Welcome to the group! It does sound like you will be one of the experts of our group.

Pat: I will be at the DL half this year too. I finally signed up this week. I am not getting a coast to coast, because I haven’t been able to find the money to go to DisneyWorld yet. I can dream about it though. I will be passing through Vegas on my way to Palm Springs in a couple weeks. We will actually be staying in Mesquite – since my father in law lives there.

Jen: Welcome to the team! I am impressed that you are running outside in the cold. I have moved inside since it started to be dark when I get home from work. I am looking forward to the warm weather coming back – or at least the longer days.

Diane: Hope you are enjoying your days off.

Rob: I know what you mean about snowy. I haven’t been outside for miles in a LONG time. My problem has a lot to do with air quality too. We get stuck in yucky inversion here and even when it isn’t snowing the air quality is so bad that I don’t dare run outside. Yuck. I can’t wait for summer!

Sailors_wfe: Isn’t the C25K an awesome program? I couldn’t run at all (always been a walker) and it was a great way to start adding running without killing myself. I am going to be a wogger for a while, and will probably do intervals. I am going to wing it at my next half. I hope to have a better plan by the Disneyland half in September

Barb (and Bob): Welcome to the team! We are growing so fast! That is great that your DH runs with you. I try to run with mine, but we have such different paces. I try to not worry about time, and just have fun with him, we will see how it goes. He is doing a 5K when I am doing ½. So he can cheer for me.

Joy: Welcome! It is going to take me a while to get to know everyone on the team but I am looking forward to it! I like your goal. I have only done one real race, and I walked, so now I am just hoping that adding a little running will improve my time. I would hate to run and come in slower than walking! Then what would be the point?!?!

As for me: I slept in my own room last night! That is great after a couple of weeks in the guest room while we tried to remodel and paint the bedroom. What a pain, but it looks nice so I will say it was totally worth it.

As far as exercising goes, I have been a royal slacker this week. With having projects every day after work, and just being too tired to drag myself out of bed in the morning I really only got one day in. I am looking forward to a long day tomorrow. Don’t know how long. I am aiming for 6, but if I can do more I will. I only have 2 weeks until my half, and I am NOT ready!

I signed up to volunteer at a local marathon here in May. I didn’t want to run another half, but found out I can get a “get a day give a day” ticket for volunteering! Why not. I have some friends and family doing the race, so it will be fun to give them their finisher medals. Then I can use my ticket to upgrade to a hopper when I go to DL for the half marathon. Hopefully my plan works.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes!

Diana - I hope you enjoy your days off! I am counting the days until Spring Break so that I can have some extra days off.

Rob - It has been really icy in Minnesota lately. We have a pretty good coating of ice under the little bit of snow. Makes for some scary running at times!

Pat - Yea! Another person from Minnesota who understand how bad my winter can actually be! When I decided to start running in January, I quickly invested in a super winter running shirt with a hood and built in mittens. The day that we went out running with the wind chill making the temperature feel like -18° made me appreciate every penny I spent on my clothing! I think this first month really tested me but also made me really commit to running - why else would you go out and run in those temperatures unless you were really going to stick it out.

Andrea - Thanks for putting together the name information. Being new to the thread, it is so helpful!

To Everyone Running the Princess this year - I can't wait to hear all about the race. That is my ultimate goal and I plan on registering to run it in 2011 with a good friend I met on the DIS.

Manda - I think that is great that you are able to get a "Give a Day, Get A Ticket" for volunteering for the race! I bet you will enjoy being on the other side of things since you know people running.

Today I got up and started with pilates and weight lifting. I then used the treadmill to walk 5 minutes, jog 20 minutes and then walk 5 minutes again. I was really proud of myself because that is the longest I have jogged in one session. It was slow but steady. After all the exercising, I weighed in for the BL9 and was happy to see I lost 2.5 pounds this week. That makes a total of 13 pounds for the month.

I need to look into a watch or something that tracks distance/speed and heart rate. My treadmill was a bit older and used and the display for the distance does not work. I also would like to know how far I am going when I go running outside. My goal is to not spend a huge amount of money but in looking at them, they all look like a lot of money. I might just wait so that I can buy a good one - I have spent a lot of money on running stuff lately (new shoes, warm clothes, the treadmill, etc).

I hope everyone has a great night!
Jen

Wow! You can feel the excitement in the team. I will reintroduce myself since there is a lot of new members. My nama is Diane and I live in Sherbrooke, Québec so you can guess that I am french-canadian (my reason to explain some problems I have sometimes to express myself in english). I have been a recreational runner for years but never running more than 6 miles . I have started to increase the distance when I did the Minnie Marathon in 2007 and last january, I did my first half at WDW in the rain and cold weather.
Now my plan is to run the Goofy in 2012, so I plan to run half-marathon this year and do a marathon in 2011 to get ready for Goofy in2012.
Right now it is freezing up here with strong winds. just hope the wind will decrease for my run tomorrow morning.

have a nice evening
Diane

Thanks to Scott for compiling this list! It is very helpful to get to know everyone. I see that Katie K80K is physically closest to us (we live close to Hershey, PA about an hour from Inner Harbor.)
I love to see the differences in our running experiences. Bob and I are hoping to volunteer with the WISH team for the Full Marathon after running the Half the day before. I see that Katie is Goofy! So we'll plan to be there handing out goodies as she goes past! It is very exciting to think about. It will be nice to draw on your past experiences when we have questions.
Thanks so much for including us new folks to your team!
~Barb & Bob

Another thanks to Scott for the list! Today I ran/walked my program which got me a little over 2 miles then walked an additional 2. Went to the gym and lifted one set. We (Mom and I, see pic below) haven't been lifting consistantly so we don't want to be too sore!

Wow, Jen, that's great! Good job losing the weight! :woohoo:

Have you looked into getting a pedometer? It's not as exact as GPS, but it will help on a treadmill while the GPS would not.

Approximately 2,000 steps equals 1 mile. Of course, if you adjust it to your specific stride, you can get a more exact number.

Thanks for all the personal welcomes guys.

I don't know about being a running expert, I think that I am living proof that anyone can run. At school I was the fat, wheezy boy with a note from Matron and up until 2001 I had not run a step and thought that running was the daftest thing ever.

My sister in law ran the London Marathon and she looked so elated by the process I thought 'I want some of that' and signed up for a 10K. Three months after that I was running a half marathon and six months after that I was lining up at the start of the London Marathon, exactly one year after starting to run. Then I was hooked. Now I'm flying from the UK to Orlando to run the Goofy and everyone thinks I'm mad.

I don't have a classic runners build (short legs and stocky body) and I struggle with my weight but if I can do this, you all can. I'm happy to give advice and support to anyone who wants it.

Pat, no I'm not a Chelsea fan, I'm from Newcastle. Please no comments, I've suffered enough.

Good luck to you all on your journeys to wherever they take you,

Liam

I forgot to add my runs for the year

21st - March - Hastings Half Marathon
2nd May - Keswick Half
23rd May - Edinburgh Marathon
19th September - Great North Run (worlds largest half marathon)
December - Hellrunner (great off-road run through bog and pond)
Jan 11 - Goofy Challenge

Morning Everyone!

I have a quick question I have been thinking about lately...does my running have anything to do with how cold I have been lately?

I am normally a really warm sort of person but since I started running, it seems that I am cold ALL the time, especially at night time. At first I thought it was because I am running outside (in freezing cold temperatures) and it just takes a long time to warm up from those temperatures (especially since I ran 3 days in freezing rain). This week though I have been inside on my treadmill because the temperatures here are too cold even for me. So, after a week of running inside, I am still cold.

Could be that I am just getting a cold or something but I thought I would ask - might be a silly question but I have been wondering about it.

Plans for the day....going to walk/run for at least 30 minutes today. It will be outside in below zero temperatures so I don't know if we will go much beyond that.

Have a great Saturday!
Jen

Hi everyone. Just posting to introduce myself. I'm excited to be on a team. I've never really been a runner before. I ran track in school, but mostly did sprints. I was never a fan of long distance running, but my wife and I were down in WDW this year during marathon weekend and it got me wondering if I could run a marathon. Then I saw everyone with their medals and knew it was something I'd have to do. So I started training 3 weeks ago. The first week I just walked, but on my second week I started a beginners running plan from runnersworld. It basically builds you up to being able to run for 30 minutes straight. Today I finished week 2 of the plan which had me running for 4 minutes and walking 1 and repeating for up to 30 minutes. I got 3.19 miles done and felt really good. Tomorrow is my rest day and Monday I'm up to 5 minute running intervals.

My goal is to be able to run the Dopey challenge next year. I know I have a long way to go, but I love a challenge.

Can't wait to get to know you all. Is anyone else using the runkeeper iphone app to track themselves. I love it. I like having the stats and map to look at after each run.

Hello All,
I wanted to check in and reintroduce myself. My name is Chrissy and I live in the easter panhandle of West Virginia, close to Maryland and Virginia. I started up running again last spring and did the C25K plan. Since then I have done 3 5Ks. I had a hard time continuing this past fall when my running partner moved away. But we got a treadmill for Christmas and I am trying to build back up again.

I just registered for a 5K in Hagerstown in April. My DS 9, is going to do a duathlon the same day. I'm thinking about heading to Disney for the EEC in June and maybe the half next January. I am thinking about joining up with team in training in honor of a friend's 4 year old little boy who was just diagnosed with leukemia.

Right now I am following Galloway's plan, I'm running 2 mins, walking 2 mins. I would like to get the running portion longer. That's my goal for the next few weeks. I look forward to following all of you for inspiration.

Cool man. I love me some Newcastle. I really wanted to get over there for the last weekend of the season this year to catch Manchester at Old Trafford and the weekend before is Newcastle at QPR. Great way to finish things off before the World Cup. Hopefully see Newcastle jump back up where they belong.

Unfortunately, no trip to OT for me this year. I got the running bug and decided to take a year off and did WDW for my first marathon instead.

On a bright note. Ran last night for the first time since I hurt my knee at the marathon. Took it easy and just did 2 miles. Came through it pain free. Gonna work on the 5k distance for the next month or so since my next half isnt until May or June, depending on if I get the job I am applying for.

Happy running! (and walking. and jogging. and lifting. and stretching. and rolling. and kickboxing. and yogaing. and everything else you do out there)

I'll re-introduce myself as well... Hi, I'm Suzann... you can normally find me doing half marathons, triathlons, stair climbs, backpacking, climbing gyms... but for the past 5 months I've been sidelined with a hip issue. The docs are still trying to figure out what's wrong, and I'm still trying to have patience. I'll be here to root you guys on though!!! :cool1:

Liam, what a great story. Sounds like you caught the bug and took off!

Jen, this is just a thought, but could it be the weight you've lost? Extra poundage means more insulation, and since you've lost a good amount, especially during the cold weather, maybe your body is trying to adjust. Maybe it will even out in a bit... :confused3

:welcome: to the team, j-sun! Sounds like you are well on your way to getting ready for the Dopey! From nothing to 5 minute runs? I think that sounds like a great start.

I don't have an iphone, but I have a few exercise apps for my Android. I haven't found one that I really love yet, though.

Yikes, Suzann! What don't you do? ;) I'm sorry about your hip. That must be frustrating to not know what the problem is. I hope they figure it out soon, and that it is a quick fix.

Is anyone else using the runkeeper iphone app to track themselves. I love it. I like having the stats and map to look at after each run.

I would love to use that app! I only have an iTouch though and it doesn't work with that. I am using the C25K app and really like how that works.

But we got a treadmill for Christmas and I am trying to build back up again.

Hello Chrissy! It is always nice to see people who did the C25K program and then were successful at running some 5Ks. That is a bummer that your running partner moved away - glad that you are getting back at it with the treadmill.

Jen, this is just a thought, but could it be the weight you've lost? Extra poundage means more insulation, and since you've lost a good amount, especially during the cold weather, maybe your body is trying to adjust. Maybe it will even out in a bit... :confused3

That is what I am thinking. It has just been weird to be so cold lately and I thought about the running because it seems like after I finish running and cool down, I almost just get too cold and can find a "nice" temperature. I just think it probably has to do with all of it...the diet, the increased exercise, running outside when it is really cold, all the weight loss, etc.

To everyone - I read here about so many different training plans people use to run. I am trying one version of the C25K but reading about others in my "Marathoning for Mortals" book. How do you decide what program is right for you? I find this to be really interesting as some of training programs seem significantly different.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!
Jen

I'm using the beginner's running program from runnersworld.com. I liked that on the surface it looked really hard, but it's not and when you finish a day you really feel like you've accomplished something, because it looked so hard.
