Real ID question UPDATE POST 27

I did not have any problems with mine.

SS is First Middle Maiden Last
Driver's License is First Maiden Last
Bank Statement has First M.M. Last
Utility bill has First Middle Last

I was really hoping this would push the Driver's License to have to conform to SS name, but I was told our state still doesn't allow 2 middle names on the License, so my Real ID just has First Middle Last.

Just get a passport card. Much easier. Just as good. LOL. That's what my MIL is doing. She does not travel internationally, but does fly domestically. Lines to get a REAL ID in my state are ridiculous. You can literally wait for 4-5 hours. That's insane for an 84 year old woman. For a few bucks more, and LESS documentation, she can have a passport card quicker and easier, virtually no wait (and you can make an appointment!).

This is what we are doing. I know we will need a Real ID to fly to Florida in November, so DH and I decided just to get passports because the whole roll out of the Real ID in Kentucky has been ridiculous. I live in the largest city in KY and they don't even have any offices here yet where we can get them.

I was at the DMV this past Tuesday to renew and update my license to an enhanced version.
I had:
passport, SS card, license- all with First, Middle, Last
utility bill- First. Last(maiden name). Was told it was not valid because the name doesn't match, even though I had my marriage license with me. Luckily, I decided to bring the jury duty summons I had just received. The summons had First, middle initial, last name and was accepted as proof.

Before I got married, my name was Jane Ann Doe.

When I got married, I dropped my middle name (Ann) & became Jane Doe Smith.

I have my birth certificate & our marriage certificate. I also have my current driver’s license, social security card, & voter’s registration card. (I‘m not employed so don’t have a current w-2 form.)

The typed name on both my driver’s license & social security card is “Jane Doe Smith.” The typed name on my voter’s registration card is Jane D. Smith.

However, while I signed my social security card as “Jane Doe Smith,” for some reason, I signed my driver’s license as “Jane D Smith.”

So I’m a little concerned due to the signature on my driver’s license not technically matching the typed name.

The sounds pretty bad. Every California DMV office is equipped to handle Real ID documentation, but it looks like in Kentucky they've currently limited it to four offices that will only process Real ID documentation if you live in that county, and one office in the state capital for everyone else.

I did play around with their checklist, and they seem to have the issue with requiring a "full legal name". I got this message:

Warning: If the name displayed on your Social Security Card or W-2 Wage and Tax Statement is not your legal name, you will need to have it updated with the Social Security Administration. Nicknames may not be used on documents.

Probably OP doesn't want to carry a passport on domestic flights?

You'll have to have it to get into federal buildings (including federal court houses)... I'm not planning to go to a federal court house anytime soon but I guess things could change quickly! :rotfl2:

The last time I was in a federal building was to handle my kid's rush passport application. But I have my Real ID driver license now, so it's necessarily a rush to renew my passport card.

We have our passports, but decided on getting global entry cards since we are planning a fall trip to London (Coronavirus pending). It also adds TSA precheck and doubles as Real ID. Easy to apply online and had to go to a 15 minute appt where they took our picture, fingerprints and a short interview. 5 years for 100.00.
